Hand sanitizer has a rather unfair reputation — this sticky, medical-smelling goo serves to remind us of a worldwide pandemic, or else the inconvenience of not being able to find a wash sink with soap. Ugh. 

Touchland is a brand that elevates the hand sanitizer experience with complex, trend-driven scents that could double as perfume in a pinch (and often does). And sure, lots of hand sanitizers come scented, but Touchland's unique conversation-starting component has single-handedly changed the perspective on cool ways to casually de-germ. Andrea Lisbona, founder of Touchland, is our guest on this episode to talk about how she made hand sanitizer (and now body & hair mist) so aspirational that it scored a serious acquisition.

And aside from our thoughts about it (of which they exist in abundance), we wondered what rebrands are for, when are they successful, and what do brands owe their audience?

If your idea of home fragrance involves sticky reed diffusers, sweeping up incense ash, or $80 candles, Pura offers something for the tech-savvy, with one of the first smart home app-controlled scent diffusion devices. More sophisticated than a flower-shaped plug-in and less treacherous than a forgotten candle left burning, Pura's device is a nifty hockey puck-sized disc that holds two different scent pods and can be controlled with an app to customize scent selection, timing, and intensity.

The fragrance industry is trotting out AI more and more in new creations and creative development, but when it comes to digitizing smells, OSMO is a Google-born initiative that uses machine learning, sensory neuroscience, data science, engineering, fine fragrance, analytical chemistry, and product development to map smells, engineer new smell molecules, recreate living scents, and finagle how olfactory technology can aid other industries. We speak with Christophe Laudamiel, OSMO's master perfumer on this episode.

We have  Marie Du Petit Thouars alongside her partner Matt Berkson on this episode for her very first podcast interview. The couple are the founders of Maison Louis Marie, the tres chic and tres mysterieux (well, less so now) fragrance and candle brand from LA.
