Stop Taking High Dose Iodine (It’s Harmful)

Thinking about using high-dose iodine to "help" your thyroid? Think again. I can’t think of many good reasons to use high-dose iodine for one simple reason:
The benefits don’t outweigh the risks.
Are there benefits to using high-dose iodine? Sure, but those benefits can be obtained using other, less dangerous, therapies and treatments.
Some people disagree with this idea by suggesting that high-dose iodine is not only beneficial but necessary.
Let’s break apart their arguments to see if they hold water:
Argument #1. High-Dose Iodine is Safe Because The Japanese Population Consumes 12.5 mg Per Day.
This may be appealing if it were true, but it’s not. Data from the Japanese government shows that the Japanese consume, on average, 1 to 3 mg per day.
Argument #2. High-Dose Iodine Helps Detoxify Harmful Compounds (Halogens).
There is some truth to this argument but you don’t need high doses of iodine to detox out halogens from your body. You can do this with chloride and low doses of iodine.
Argument #3. High-Dose Iodine Does Not Cause Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.
There is a clear connection between increasing iodine intake and the onset of autoimmune thyroid disease that has been confirmed by multiple studies.
How much iodine should you take each day? The ideal dose is 150 to 300 mcg per day from all sources.
It’s probably safe to increase your dose up to 1 to 3 mg per day at the most, based on available data, but there will be some risks associated with these higher doses so proceed with caution.
Based on the data, and my experience, staying in the 150 mcg to 300 mcg per day range provides the most benefit without any side effects.
