    About Your Host Jim Harshaw

My name is Jim Harshaw. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re in the right place because you can get there from here.

    And I can help.

    Who I Am

I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them.

I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires.

Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

    I’ve been lucky.

I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have.

    I will show you how.

    Why You Are Here

You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track.

You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow.

Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.

  • #213 The Commitment: From Drug Addict to World Record Ultramarathoner, Charlie Engle Talks about Choosing Success (45:53)

    Dead Sea to Everest.

Charlie Engle is an ultramarathon runner, an adventure-seeker, a global explorer and a philanthropist; he's also a recovering crack addict, a convicted felon, and a man driven to the edge of human endurance and achievement.

After a decade-long addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol, Charlie hit bottom with a near-fatal six-day binge that ended in a hail of bullets. As Engle got sober, he turned to run, which became his lifeline, his pastime, and his salvation. The Matt Damon-produced documentary, Running the Sahara, followed Engle as he leads a team on a harrowing, record-breaking 4,500-mile run across the Sahara Desert, which helped raise millions of dollars for charity.

Charlie’s growing notoriety led to an investigation and a subsequent unjust conviction for mortgage fraud for which he spent sixteen months in federal prison in Beckley, West Virginia.

In his book Running Man, Charlie tells the surprising, funny, and emotional story of his life, detailing his setbacks and struggles and how he blazed a path to freedom by putting one foot in front of the other.

In his latest adventure, Charlie seeks to become the first person in history to trek from the lowest point to the highest summit on every continent. From the lowest point of the planet - the depths of the Dead Sea - Charlie will swim, free dive, run, paddle, mountain bike and climb his way through multiple countries and landscapes, striving to complete his journey on the very tip of the earth - Mount Everest.

    Don’t wait for permission.

You’re waiting. There’s a sense inside of you that someone is going to come and tell you that it’s ok. That you have permission to do the thing that you’ve always wanted to do. That they’ll know when the time is right and they’ll give you the green light. And when they do that, all of the risks will be gone. All of the fear will vanish.
Here’s the truth… no one is coming to save you. That person isn’t coming. Your fear is normal. If you want to move toward doing something different or better you will meet with your fear and that’s a sign that you’re about to breakthrough. That’s EXACTLY where you want to be. In this episode, I break down this feeling, where it comes from and what to do about it...

  • #211 From Rut To Groove: One Man’s Story of a Transformed Life (51:25)

    A story like yours.

Eric is a Pathfinder who I wanted to have on the podcast. By Pathfinder I mean Eric is in alum of my coaching program, Reveal Your Path. When you witness a radically transformed life it's proof that you can change too. I’m bringing Eric on today not to talk about my program but because he is an example of your ability to create change in your life, get out of a rut and live an extraordinary life, not just despite your failures but because of them. Eric was in an unfulfilling job. It was comfortable but he knew there was more in him. He knew that he was leaving too much on the table and he didn’t see a way out. I’ve known Eric for a long time but we hadn’t talked to each other for quite a long time before reconnecting a few years ago. You’re going to find his story very relatable and very powerful. And you’re going to leave this episode inspired, energized and excited because you’re going to fully understand the steps that he took to get out of his rut and onto his path so that you can too.

  • #208 The “Magic Questions” That Lead to Clarity, Focus, and Breakthrough (23:19)

The magic question that cuts to the chase.

Sometimes we get busy and that’s all it is. Just busywork. We go 100 mph and get 100 things done but at the end of the day, we feel like we’re in the same place that we started. Ever felt like that? Ever wish you had a sledgehammer that would break through the busyness so that you could see what you really need to be doing?

    Me too.
One night while at dinner with clients, one shared a question that did exactly that. It was like this tool that you could use that would help you cut through the BS and get to the real work that would make all of the things on your to-do list either easier or obsolete.

This “magic question” will help you do the same. If you’re looking for clarity and focus in a distracted world, try this magic question out and experience the results immediately.

  • #207 Shedding Cultural Assumptions About Success: The False Dichotomy that’s Holding You Back (19:25)

    “And” not “or”

We are raised with an “or” mindset. You can be a firefighter or an astronaut. A doctor or a lawyer. A football player or a baseball player. However, this mindset doesn’t serve you well when incorporated into your psyche. You begin to agree with the cultural assumptions that you can be either a successful businessman or a good father but not both. That you can either be in shape or work long hours, but not both. These are simply false dichotomies that we accept without thinking about the real possibilities. In this episode, I give you examples of people living by the “And” mindset. Popularized by the landmark book “Built to Last,” I explore the opposing philosophies of “the tyranny of the or” and “the genius of the and” that Jim Collins and Jerry Porras discovered when researching visionary companies. This episode will open your eye to the ability to lead your life with a whole new perspective.

  • #206 From Zero to Fulfilled in 30 Seconds or Less: A Tactic for Happiness (21:00)

    Find fulfillment now.

If you can just make more money, then you'll be happy, right? Or if you can just get that promotion. Or maybe change companies, then you'll be happy.

While I believe that money can buy happiness (a short-term excitement like when you buy a new car), it can't buy fulfillment (a deep belief that you're leading a life well-lived). In this episode, I talk about a powerful lesson that will help you live a more satisfying life now instead of waiting for the next outcome you're seeking.

  • #205 How to Crush Massive Goals Even If You Have Massive Obstacles: A Conversation with Andre Kajlich (55:43)

    Succeeding despite your obstacles.

In 2003, Andre Kajlich was a charismatic 23 year old student attending his father’s alma mater in the city of Prague. One night, partying with friends into the early hours, he wound up on the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train.

His devastating injuries required that both legs be amputated above the knees, and after three weeks in a medically induced coma, he awoke to an insanely altered reality. He has become an ultra endurance pioneer, a world champion paratriathlete, an Ironman World Champion, and the only wheelchair athlete to finish an Ultraman Triathlon (he’s done four: Hawaii, Australia, Canada, and Israel). He finished the Race Across America, handcycling 3,100 miles in just 12 days, sleeping 90 minutes a night to make it from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. During the Brazil135 UltraMarathon, André completed 135 miles through jungle terrain in 62 hours, sometimes crawling along the forest dragging his wheelchair behind him. He was not only the first person in a wheelchair to finish these, he was the first to even attempt them. He is without question, an inspiration.
