Today I bring you Vice Admiral Kevin Donegan.
On September 3rd, 2015, the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT)/U.S. 5th Fleet /Combined Maritime Forces held a change-of-command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt where Vice Admiral and former wrestler Kevin Donegan took command.
Most of us have heard of CENTCOM, which is U.S. Central Command. NAVCENT, Naval Forces Central Command, is the naval component of CENTCOM. That’s what the Admiral does… he’s the Commander NAVCENT and the 5th Fleet. The area of responsibility encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. That comprises 20 countries!
Vice Adm. Donegan is a 1980 graduate of my alma mater, the University of Virginia. His first operational assignment was with Strike Fighter Squadron 131 where he was among the first F/A-18’s to strike Libya.
Donegan then commanded that same squadron, completing a deployment to the Arabian Gulf where he earned three command excellence awards. He also commanded the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. He commanded Battle Force 7th Fleet and Carrier Strike Group 5 aboard USS George Washington.
Donegan's most recent assignment was director of operations for CENTCOM. He served at the Pentagon as director of the Navy Quadrennial Defense Review (basically the budget review), and as the aide to the deputy chief of naval operations for Plans, Policy and Operations.
He completed duty as flag lieutenant to the commander of Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. During that tour he deployed to Sarajevo as the NATO liaison to the commander of the United Nations Protection Forces serving as the principal air advisor during NATO's air strikes.
Donegan graduated from several naval schools and colleges including the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School as the Outstanding Student, the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), as well as completed Harvard Kennedy School's Executive Education Program in National and International Security.
His personal awards are far too numerous to list here. Let’s just say it would be like listing Bruce Baumgartner’s career awards and medals. His flying experience includes over 3,800 hours in 31 different types of aircraft and over 800 landings on 15 different aircraft carriers.

About Your Host Jim Harshaw
My name is Jim Harshaw. You and I were both wrestlers once so we’re coming from the same place, which is a good place for us to start. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here.
And I can help.
Who I Am
I’m a speaker, author and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former wrestlers reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life.
I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires.
Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky.
I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have.
I will show you how.
Why You are Here
You were a wrestler. You’ve trained and competed in the world’s toughest sport. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track.
You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not trained, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as a wrestler. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow.
Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by the learning that takes place in our sport, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.

Today I bring you Greg Hatcher. Greg is a 1983 graduate of Alma College (Michigan) where he lettered in wrestling, soccer and baseball. Following graduation he began selling insurance for Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield. For a record six of his seven years he was named Account Executive of the Year.
Greg then struck off on his own, starting the The Hatcher Agency from scratch in September of 1990 with a loan from the bank, an assistant, and 500 square feet of office space. He signed a 3 year lease thinking it would be all he would ever need but at the end of the first year he had outgrown his office space, had grown to 7 employees and produced more insurance than any agent in the state of Arkansas. Three years later The Hatcher Agency was named Arkansas' Small Business of the Year and was the largest health insurance agency in the state. They’ve led the state of Arkansas in health insurance sales every year since. Today, The Hatcher Agency has grown to 50 employees and insures over 180,000 individuals. They’ve been recognized as among the top 1% of health insurance producers nationwide.
In 1999, Greg wrote a book called 55 Steps to Outrageous Service, which outlines the service that The Hatcher Agency delivers everyday to their clients. It has sold over 15,000 copies and a publisher has purchased the rights to the book and is printing over 100,000 copies.
Greg’s greatest work has come from getting wrestling started in the state of Arkansas. He founded The Arkansas Wrestling Association and has purchased the mats for 60 high schools and 4 colleges to help get new programs started. Because of this, he has been honored with the “Dan Gable America Needs Wrestling Award” and been named WIN Magazine’s Man of the Year. Because of his efforts, over 4,000 kids now wrestle in Arkansas.

Dom Gorie had an amazing career as a Naval aviator and as a NASA astronaut. As a Navy pilot he logged over 6,700 hours in more than 35 aircraft and completed over 600 aircraft carrier landings. He flew 38 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. He then went on to be a Naval Test Pilot. His astronaut career includes four space shuttle missions, including trips to the International Space Station. As a father, the danger of his job wasn't lost on his family. As a child he'd experienced the loss of his own father when he was just 5 years old. His father, Captain Paul Pudwill of the USAF was killed in 1963 when the plane he was flying developed ice on its wings. Amazingly, Captain Pudwill ordered his crew to bail out then steered the plane away from populated areas before attempting to eject in time to save his own life.
Dom Gorie graduated from Miami Palmetto HS in Fl before going on to the US Naval Academy where he wrestled under legendary coach Ed Peery.

In the 19th episode of Wrestling with Greatness I interview Ryan Michler, host of Order of Man podcast. a show that I’ve been listening to a lot lately.
Ryan’s personal story, which he reveals early in the show, is staggering. While his early life lacked a positive role model, he has become a role model for the rest of us. He shows us how to live.
In his podcast he brings on guests that have achieved at a high level but also bring a tremendous insight into the lives of men and what we face on a daily basis and how to be the best version of ourselves. When I found out that Ryan wrestled, I knew I had to have him on the show.
We discuss self-mastery, purpose, leadership, relationships, finance and manly skills.
