Much of the country is either back to school or headed there soon – but what about our supply chains? If they had to pack their backpacks and start the school year off on the right foot, what would they do?
In this episode, Mike takes global supply chains ‘back to school’ with co-hosts Greg White and Scott Luton:
• Official recession designation or not, the best defense is a good offense
• Employee retention is already critical for supply chains, but it will only become more so as human-centric digital automation is adopted
• Cash management and inventory management are absolutely essential – and supply chain leaders need to work with finance to get to the head of the class

For those of us already working in business, the conflict in Ukraine, COVID, and warehouse space shortages are three disruptions in what has been a very challenging last few years. But for the students getting ready to graduate from college with degrees in supply chain and management, they combine to equal job security for the foreseeable future.
In this popular Supply Chain Now classic, Scott Luton had the chance to speak with two seniors about to graduate from Texas Christian University and Dr. Travis Tokar, a professor of Supply Chain Management with the Neely School of Business at TCU. Anne O'Connor will be graduating with a degree in supply chain and value management, and Jacob Mutscher is graduating with a double major in supply chain and value management and business information systems.
In this conversation, they share their well-educated views on:
• Why supply chain was the most appealing course of study for them, and what they hope to be able to do with the degree after graduation
• The global supply chain trends they are tracking while completing their studies
• The importance of investing in college-level supply chain programs, and how they are positioning students to succeed after graduation

Managing your allocation is a dynamic process that requires proactive planning. But the tools and processes shippers use today are static and reactive resulting in shortfalls, contract penalties, and missing out on containers you contracted for. This is further complicated by the fact that a shipping carrier’s product is ‘perishable’ in the sense that the value of available capacity decreases closer to the time of departure.
Allocation management empowers shippers to manage the forward-looking allocation of all their ocean contracts, so they can be proactive and prevent shortfalls while not overcommitting.
In this Supply Chain Now livestream, Scott Luton and Greg White were joined by Gordon Downes, Co-Founder and CEO of NYSHEX, to discuss:
• How to centralize your ocean contracts
• Preventing shortfalls by making sure carrier agreements contain an appropriate level of granularity
• Learning to ‘control the controllables’ to proactively manage vessel delays, rolls, and blank sailings

On June 17, 2022, the member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) accepted a proposal made by the U.S., E.U., India, and South Africa that modifies nationally granted intellectual property rights related to the COVID-19 vaccine.
The proposal was leaked early, so the world knew the vote was coming. But other than the WTO and a few media organizations, most of the world shrugged at the news, despite the big picture implications for private industry.
The COVID-19 vaccine was made available on an impressive timeline, thanks to the incentives created by Operation Warp Speed. But if for-profit companies fear losing their intellectual property rights, what choice will they make in the future?
Many innovations, including mRNA vaccines, are the result of private investment and risk tolerance. If companies do not believe their intellectual property rights will be respected and protected, they have less incentive to innovate and almost no incentive to collaborate.
Wen Xie is a patent attorney and a Partner at Global IP Counselors, LLP. In this Dial P for Procurement crossover interview, she and host Kelly Barner review the events leading up to the proposal’s acceptance and its potential future implications:
• How the WTO’s decision to waive IP rights for COVID-19 vaccines might change the decision-making calculus of for-profit companies going forward
• Where we may already be seeing evidence that other international organizations are considering the extent to which they can challenge IP rights
• What professionals that are not in the field of intellectual law should take away from this series of events
