  • P is Also for Payments and (Credit Card) Processing with Jim Luff and Kris Lance

Dial P regulars know that when you ‘dial p’ you get procurement - usually. But sometimes, p is for payments and credit card processing. Keeping in mind that one company’s payments become another company’s cash flow is absolutely critical in today’s hyperconnected supply ecosystems. All procurement professionals need to know how multiple forms of invoicing and payment work – and how they can support all suppliers’ desire to get paid sooner.

In this month’s episode of Dial P for Procurement, Kelly Barner and Scott Luton are joined by Jim Luff, Marketing Manager at Chosen Payments, and Kris Lance, Senior Director at Una. They answered all of our questions about how payment processing works, including credit card payments, chargebacks, and contactless payments.

During a conversation recorded live with the full participation of the Supply Chain Now ‘skybox’ audience, Jim and Kris answer questions such as:

    • The basics of payment processing in the context of corporate procurement and supply chain.

    • What happens in practice when a company’s customers take too long to pay them for products and services that have not only already been invoiced, in some cases they have already been delivered

    • What chargebacks are, how they work, and what enterprise procurement professionals need to know about them

  • Serial Entrepreneur and Innovative Logistics Problem Solver: Bernard Parks with TommyRun

There are an untold number of unsolved problems waiting for someone to notice them and develop a solution. But for the entrepreneur and the team that supports them, designing the solution is just the beginning of the journey. In order to achieve lasting success, they need to continue innovating, achieve scale, and protect the unique components of their business model from competitor encroachment.

Bernard Parks is the CEO and co-founder of Tommy Run, an on-demand and delivery platform for building and construction materials. They will support any project type, but their core customers are pros: builders and contractors. In addition to the convenience of delivery, Tommy Run solves the problem of inventory storage on job sites – especially job sites that lack secure storage.

In this episode of Supply Chain Now, Bernard joins co-hosts Scott Luton and Tandreia Bellamy, to share his entrepreneurial story:

    • Why logistics is an important part of EVERY business model because “everything has to touch a truck”

    • Once a business accepts that they cannot succeed without effective logistics, they must recognize drivers as a critical part of their business ecosystem

    • The importance of being able to determine which things are ‘fires’ that need to be addressed immediately from the things that are just noise – in business and in life

In this episode, Vice President of Strategic Customers Andrew Hooser joins us to detail his own professional trajectory, how RateLinx helps companies unite their data and take action - and why prescriptive analytics are the way of the future. From vendor to shipper to techie, Andrew has seen (and done) it all when it comes to modern logistics, so don't miss his expert take on supply challenges past, present and future.

  • ‘Value to customers, value to teammates’ On a Reverse Logistics Mission with Herb Shear

The recent explosion in eCommerce has made the management of returns, or reverse logistics, a critical component of the customer experience. But it hasn’t always been that way. In the early 1990s, companies were just starting to look at how they might address the inventory clogging up their distribution centers.

Herb Shear is the Executive Chairman at G2 Reverse Logistics, a comprehensive reverse logistics solution that combines analytics and operations to help maximize net recovery. He was one of the early pioneers of the practice that would become known as ‘reverse logistics’ in response to a customer request for help. The solution quickly caught on, especially with mass retailers, and laid the groundwork for what has become a highly sophisticated and fast-growing part of supply chain management.

In this episode of Supply Chain Now, which is part of the Reverse Logistics Series, Herb joins co-hosts Scott Luton and Tony Sciarrotta, Executive Director of the Reverse Logistics Association, to take listeners from the earliest days of reverse logistics to the cutting edge practices being implemented today:

    • When ease of customer returns began to be viewed as a way for retailers to compete for market share

    • How the development of new AI-enabled technologies is supporting today’s complex omnichannel reverse logistics requirements

    • How the Shear Family Foundation is using their success from helping people ‘send things back’ to give back to communities experiencing food insecurity

  • Ambassador for the Open Road: Kellylynn McLaughlin with Schneider

There is a shortage of long-haul truck drivers and tanker drivers in this country right now. When the issue is raised, people often point to the long, lonely hours on the road and how incompatible the working conditions are with the professional priorities of millennial workers.

But everything is about your perspective, and if you ask Kellylynn McLaughlin, she talks about adventure, and meeting new people, and touring facilities. She makes it sound more like an expedition than a job. Kellylynn is a professional OTR driver and training engineer with Schneider. In 2020 she was appointed as Schneider’s first-ever ‘Women in Trucking’ Driver Ambassador, part of their diversity recruitment program to encourage new people to consider a career in trucking.

In this conversation, Kellylynn joins co-hosts Scott Luton and Ward Richmond, Executive Vice President at Colliers International, to share her view of life on the road:

    • The excitement and danger she experiences on the road – and there are more of both than she would have expected

    • Why she enjoys training Schneider’s new drivers, people who come from all over the world to learn the mechanics and safety measures of OTR trucking

    • How she thinks the supply chain needs to be reimagined so that people – not profit – are put front and center
