  • **** BITES -- Ed Stivender's "Little Scar Face" with guest Sadie Anderson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.
On today's BITE, we'll listen to Ed Stivender's rendition of the Native American Cinderella story "Little Scar Face," and we'll chat about it with long-time Cinderella fan Sadie Anderson.

  • Writer with a Red Wagon
In this hour, Sam's childhood thoughts about becoming a writer lead to a conversation with Dallas Graham, the man behind an inititive called The Red Fred Project. The project consists of writing collaborations between Mr. Graham and young creatives who are navigating critical or chronic illness. At the heart of each book created by the project, you'll find a cast of characters comprising a bunch of colorful birds, themselves comprised of commas. You'll be inspired by the project, and you'll enjoy our conversation with Dallas. You'll also hear Syd Lieberman tell a traditional story called "The Wise Shoemaker of Studena," one of Syd's many traditional Jewish stories that we love. Weaving in and out of the episode segments, you'll enjoy the music of Aimee Nolte, a wonderful pianist, singer, and songwriter living in Southern California. Aimee visited the studio to promote her upcoming album, and we happened to catch her. You'll feel lucky we did.

  • Fifty Thousand Bees on my Head
We’re happy today to feature stories and conversation with Doug Elliott. He’s a storyteller, sure, but before he’s a storyteller, he’s a naturalist, and he incorporates his experiences and his knowledge of the natural world into his unique brand of earth-minded stories and music.
Doug’s stories will make you want to take a closer look at the world around you to see what it can teach you about being a human being. And we hope that as you listen, you’ll think of some of the experiences you may have had with the world’s creatures, and that you’ll share those memories with the people you love – maybe even with the people with whom you’re listening to the show.
First up, a recording made live at the Toronto Storytelling Festival. Doug is a regular up there, and this story about crows was worth capturing on tape. Then, you'll hear a rolicking tale called "Cajuns and the Crawdad Hole." We'll have a good sit-down with Doug, too, and we'll top it off with a story called "Fifty-Thousand Bees on my Head." It's all this hour, filled with stories and conversation made for you and your family, and brought to you by The Apple Seed.
