In act I, scene III of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, we find the pompous Polonius rattling off seemingly useless advice to his departing son, Laertes. Starting on line 71, Polonius famously declares:
“Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, But not expressed in fancy—rich, not gaudy, For the apparel oft proclaims the man.”
