One of the most common stories I hear is, "I'm not ready yet." You have a dream, a goal, an ambition, but without the connections, skills, or resources it feels out of reach. Ellen Bennett, Founder of Hedley and Bennett and author of DREAM FIRST, DETAILS LATER, lifts the curtains to talk about her uncertain, circuitous, passion-driven journey. After a difficult divorce at age 9, Ellen was raised by her mother, who worked long hours to keep the lights on and the family fed. At 18, a two-month trip to Mexico turned into 4 years before Ellen returned to the U.S., walked in the back door of a Michelin star restaurant and asked for a job as a line cook. There, she observed the challenges cooks faced- one of them being the one-size fits all aprons that wore out, caused problems and generally weren't quality products. Hedley and Bennett is now one of the world's leading Apron manufacturers, collaborating with tastemakers like Martha Stewart and Alton Brown and top chefs like David Chang, April Bloomfield, and Nobu Matsuhisa.

A few weeks ago a shared a conversation on Clubhouse with photographers Ben Von Wong and Tim Tadder and I received a lot of positive feedback. • Short term urgency, long term patience Seasons of life- we can't perform at the peak forever, the folks at the top of their craft take time to recover, heal, train and improve
• Once you find your thing, how do you execute? The creative challenges and tug-o-wars are universal- we all go through it. You're not alone.

It's no secret that 2020 has shifted how we do business. I received a note the other day from an aspiring photographer. He wanted to know what it takes to become a pro. I thought--very pragmatically--that it's really not complicated. HARD maybe, but complicated, no. In this episode, I cover the 5 key steps to becoming a pro.

Now, if you're thinking - Chase, it is a bunch of fluff.... Well, of course. Here's the truth: This isn't really about how to become a pro. It's about how to commit to something.

There are a zillion steps to becoming a pro. Days, weeks, years of work on the craft. But the #1 thing I see absent in people who SAY they want it....it a lack of commitment. This is usually because of fear.

Fear that you won't be able to support yourself and MAKE A LIVING - WHICH IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A PROFESSIONAL. The reality is that you probably either want to become a pro and still need to do the following things; or you don't want it.

In the former case - that you DO want to become a pro and - then this episode is a 'you can do this / get off your ass' message to you. In the latter case - the case of not actually wanting it -- then there's no need to pretend. Maybe it's just a hobby or an side-interest and that's okay too.

And that little voice puts up roadblocks. Sometimes those roadblocks are real, but more often those roadblocks are completely constructed from nothing but irrational fear or the most basic of actions.
