  • Episode 19, Season 2: Attachment Across the Generations: How Our Past Shapes Our Present
In this episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley dives into a thought-provoking exploration of how attachment styles have been shaped and reshaped across multiple generations. While research in this area is still developing, Dr. Hensley shares her insights, blending the data we do have with her own professional expertise and observations from years of working with clients. Together, she and Raina reflect on how cultural norms, economic conditions, and parenting trends have influenced the way each generation both experiences and passes down attachment.

We begin with The Greatest Generation aka the Silent Generation (1928–1945), who were shaped by the Great Depression and World War II. Their attachment strategies often leaned toward survival, self-sacrifice, and stoicism—traits that helped them endure hardship but often left emotional needs unspoken. This foundation directly influenced the Baby Boomers (1946–1964), who grew up in a time of post-war prosperity, suburban expansion, and cultural shifts. While this generation had greater stability, many were raised by emotionally distant parents still carrying war scars, creating a paradox of material abundance alongside emotional gaps.

Next, we move to Generation X (1965–1980), often called the “latchkey kids.” With both parents working and divorce rates climbing, many Gen X children learned independence early but often struggled with consistent emotional attunement at home. This set the stage for Millennials (1981–1996), who came of age in a rapidly globalizing world of technology, economic instability, and shifting social values. Millennials were raised with more open conversations about emotions but also felt the weight of high expectations, student debt, and uncertain futures—all of which influence how they form and sustain attachments today.

Finally, we turn to Gen Z (1997–2012) and Gen Alpha (2013–present), the most digital-native generations. Gen Z has grown up amidst political polarization, social media pressures, and the mental health crisis, shaping a cohort that is both highly self-aware and often highly anxious. Gen Alpha, still in childhood, is being raised by Millennials who are more intentional about emotional intelligence, attachment security, and breaking cycles—but also parenting in a world defined by technology, climate concerns, and shifting cultural landscapes.

Dr. Hensley and Raina bring compassion and clarity to this conversation, showing how the ripple effects of one generation’s experiences can echo for decades. At the heart of the discussion is a message of hope: while each generation carries wounds, each also has the opportunity to break cycles, build secure attachments, and create healthier family units for the future.

  • Episode 18, Season 2: Holding onto Hope in the Midst of Pain
In this week’s episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Hensley and Raina lean into one of the most powerful forces we can carry with us through life’s darkest seasons—hope.

So often, when we walk through trauma, loss, or deep relational pain, it feels as though hope is the first thing to vanish. Whether we’re wrestling with the aftermath of PTSD and CPTSD, navigating heartbreak, or enduring circumstances that seem impossible to recover from, hopelessness can take root quickly. But science and lived experience both show us something remarkable: hope has the ability to transform the nervous system, soften the impact of trauma, and ignite the possibility of change.

Dr. Hensley and Raina dive into the differences between hope and faith, exploring how these two forces weave together. Faith, they share, is the unseen—it’s trusting in something bigger than ourselves. Hope, however, is the present—it’s the silver lining we can cling to even in the middle of heartbreak, the light that helps us breathe through the shadows. Together, faith and hope create a bridge between what is and what can be.

Through raw honesty and deeply personal stories, both hosts open up about seasons in their own lives when hope was the only thing they had to hold onto. Their reflections remind us that while pain may shape us, it doesn’t have to define us. When hope enters the room, everything begins to shift—our perspective, our choices, and the way we show up for ourselves and others.

This episode is more than just a conversation; it’s an invitation. An invitation to believe that even in the hardest, most heartbreaking circumstances, hope can still bloom. And when it does, it has the power to rewire our brains, reframe our stories, and restore our joy.

  • Episode 17, Season 2: Restoring Human Decency: Choosing Kindness in a Divided World
In the aftermath of heartbreaking tragedy and the loss of Charlie Kirk, our nation is once again faced with a sobering reality: we are not just battling political division, but something much deeper—an erosion of human decency. In this episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley and co-host Raina Joy step away from political rhetoric to reflect on what it truly means to be human, to choose kindness, and to build bridges rather than walls.

Together, they explore how acts of violence and hatred are not simply social or cultural issues, but signs of spiritual warfare. Scripture reminds us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers” (Ephesians 6:12). These moments of darkness reveal the demonic forces at work in our world—seeking to divide, destroy, and corrupt. Yet even in this brokenness, we are called to be light-bearers, choosing love, compassion, and healthy discourse over bitterness and blame.

Dr. Sarah and Raina also speak to the growing epidemic of mental illness and intrusive, demonic thoughts that plague so many in today’s society. They remind listeners that behind every belief, every action, and every worldview is a story. When we approach others with curiosity and empathy rather than condemnation, we open the door to true understanding and healing.

This episode is a heartfelt call to return to human decency—to remember that kindness matters, that every person carries wounds we cannot see, and that disagreement does not have to mean division. By grounding ourselves in faith, leaning into compassion, and recognizing the spiritual battle we are all in, we can begin to heal not only our relationships but also the heart of our nation.

If you’ve been searching for a message of hope, love, and unity in a time of confusion and grief, this conversation will encourage you to anchor yourself in what matters most: faith, empathy, and the unwavering power of human decency.

  • Episode 16, Season 2: Breaking Free from Fear: How to Stop Letting It Run Your Life and Ruin Your Relationships
Fear is one of the most powerful forces shaping our choices, our relationships, and the way we show up in the world. In this episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley and co-host Raina Joy dive deep into the psychology of fear, how it hides beneath the surface of our nervous system, how it gets wired in early experiences, and how it quietly dictates our patterns in love, conflict, and connection.

Fear often masquerades as self-protection. It convinces us to shut down instead of lean in, to control instead of trust, to react instead of respond. Left unchecked, fear doesn’t just cause anxiety, it erodes intimacy, sabotages our communication, and keeps us locked in cycles that feel impossible to break. Drawing on nearly two decades of attachment science and relational psychology, Dr. Sarah explains how fear is tied to our nervous system’s survival responses and why “pushing through it” rarely works for long.

But this conversation goes beyond science. Raina and Dr. Sarah also explore the deeper spiritual dimensions of fear, bringing their strong Christian faith into the dialogue. They reference scriptures like “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7), highlighting how God’s design for us is rooted not in bondage to fear but in freedom, love, and courage. Together, they weave psychology and spirituality into a holistic understanding of why fear shows up, and how we can begin to release it.

Most importantly, this episode doesn’t just name the problem, it offers a path forward. Dr. Sarah and Raina share practical steps for loosening fear’s grip on your life, from nervous system capacity-building strategies, to reorienting your mindset, to leaning into the promises of God. You’ll learn how to recognize when fear is running your decisions, how to cultivate safety within yourself, and how to start showing up in relationships with greater faith, confidence, and emotional resilience.

If fear has been dictating your choices, your relationships, or your sense of self-worth, this episode is an invitation to step into a different story, one of courage, clarity, and connection.

  • Episode 15, Season 2: The Power of Play in Healing, with Special Guest Lauran September
What if one of the most powerful tools for healing, intimacy, and joy has been with us since childhood? In this inspiring episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley and Raina sit down with actress, creative consultant, and self-published author Lauran September to explore the transformative role of play in our relationships, our creativity, and our spiritual healing. Drawing from her book, "Playful Healing," and her rich background in acting and improv, Lauran invites us to rediscover play as a sacred doorway back to joy, self-expression, and connection.

Research has long shown that play is not just a pastime for children, it is essential to human flourishing at every age. Play therapy, for instance, has been used for decades as a way to process trauma, unlock hidden emotions, and reconnect people with their inner child. In this episode, the hosts and Lauran illuminate how those same principles can be applied to our adult lives and romantic partnerships. When we allow ourselves to be playful with our partners, we move beyond performance and routine, opening the door to intimacy, laughter, and deep emotional safety.

The conversation doesn’t stop at relationships; it goes deeper into the spiritual essence of play. As Lauran shares, play is at the heart of who we are as creators, as lovers, and as human beings. It softens the nervous system, nourishes the soul, and reminds us that life is not just about survival, it’s about delight, spontaneity, audacity and authentic expression. Through personal stories, professional insights, and spiritual reflections, Dr. Hensley, Raina and Lauran explore how engaging in playful acts can help us heal old wounds, reawaken joy, and reconnect with the divine spark of creativity that lives within us all.

If you’ve ever felt weighed down by the seriousness of life or the heaviness of unresolved pain, this episode is an invitation to return to wonder. To laugh. To explore. To play. Because when we let ourselves play, we’re not just entertaining ourselves, we’re healing, connecting, and remembering who we truly are.

  • Episode 14, Season 2: Mending Hearts & Homes: The Power of Mediation with Joe Dillon of Equitable Mediation
In this uplifting episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Hensley and Raina welcome Joe Dillon, co-founder of Equitable Mediation Services and a seasoned expert in divorce mediation. As a powerful continuation of our Family Court Series, this episode offers listeners a beacon of hope—clear, compassionate alternatives to conventional court separation and custody disputes.

Joe brings both personal insight and profound expertise to this conversation. Inspired by his own experience as a child of divorce who witnessed the emotionally devastating effects of lawyer-driven litigation, Joe’s mission is rooted in preventing similar trauma from impacting other families. With over 17 years of private mediation practice under his belt—and an MBA in finance, plus training from prestigious institutions such as Harvard, MIT, and Northwestern—he combines emotional intelligence and financial savviness to guide couples toward fair, collaborative outcomes.

One of the most compelling parts of the discussion centers on the "interest-based negotiation" model Joe champions—an approach that shifts focus from entrenched positions to underlying needs and shared goals. Joe explains how mediation fosters "win-win" agreements and dramatically reduces costs and emotional damage compared to traditional litigation, which he notes can reach as high as $200,000—the equivalent of a four-year college education.

This episode also shines a spotlight on Joe’s pioneering role in virtual mediation—a service he launched in 2011, well before many embraced remote alternatives during the pandemic. His practices empower families across numerous states (California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington State) to engage in thoughtful, structured mediation from any location.

Throughout the episode, Joe extends tangible resources: from free courses, helpful blogs, and consultation options available through Equitable Mediation, to advice on designing “roommate agreements” when post-divorce couples find it necessary to continue co-habitating for financial or logistical reasons. This episode explores why mediators aren’t just facilitators—they’re peace architects, helping couples untangle complex emotional and financial decisions in ways that protect children, relationships, and dignity.

Why This Episode Matters for Our Listeners
    1. Offers a Practical Alternative to Litigation
Through Joe’s personal journey and his data-backed approach, listeners can discover a kinder, more constructive path out of marriage or parent-child tension that preserves both stability and civility.
    2. Reduces Financial and Emotional Toll
As Joe highlights, mediation not only lowers the fiscal burden of divorce but also shields families—especially children—from the trauma of court conflict.
    3. Accessible Anywhere, Anytime
Joe’s virtual-first model makes mediation accessible regardless of geography, fitting seamlessly into modern, busy lives.
    4. Provides Real-World Tools and Empowerment
From negotiation frameworks to free educational content and flexible agreements, this episode equips listeners with knowledge, hope, and actionable steps.
Episode 14 isn’t just another episode—it’s a lifeline for families navigating the storm of separation. Joe Dillon will show you that healing, fairness, and hope are possible—even when the path seems steep. Mediation isn't just a process; it’s a bridge to a new chapter defined by cooperation and compassion.

  • Episode 13, Season 2: Love on Autopilot: The Hidden Dangers of Using AI in Your Relationships
In this episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley dives into one of the most timely and overlooked threats to modern love: the use of artificial intelligence in romantic relationships. While AI has incredible benefits in education, work, and even self-development, when it crosses into the territory of our most intimate connections, the risks are profound. Dr. Hensley unpacks the psychological cost of outsourcing our communication, validation, and even emotional expression to machines, revealing how this can quietly erode both our sense of self and the trust between partners.

Through the lens of attachment science, Dr. Hensley explores how AI dependency interacts with each attachment style in unique but equally damaging ways. For the anxious-preoccupied, AI can become a dangerous validation trap, another addictive tool to soothe insecurity temporarily, but one that deepens dependency rather than fostering true relational safety. For the fearful-avoidant, AI may fuel cycles of hyperfixation and overthinking, intensifying inner conflict and emotional spiraling when they lean into their anxious side. And for the dismissive-avoidant, AI can become a shield that distances them further, providing ready-made responses that bypass vulnerability, intimacy, and the emotional presence their partners need.

Dr. Hensley also sheds light on the broader psychological consequences of allowing machines to mediate human love. When we turn to AI for reassurance, scripted intimacy, or conflict resolution, we bypass the messy, imperfect, yet profoundly human work of building trust and resilience with another person. Over time, this reliance can stunt emotional growth, dilute authenticity, and undermine the very skills necessary for a healthy, secure partnership.

Ultimately, Dr. Hensley reminds listeners that human connection is our deepest need and most vital resource. AI can be a useful tool in many aspects of life, but when it comes to love, discernment and moderation are essential. True intimacy requires presence, honesty, and vulnerability, things no algorithm can replicate. This episode is both a cautionary tale and a call to return to the raw, real, irreplaceable art of human connection.

  • Episode 12, Season 2: Mastering the Conscious Mind: The Key to Directing Your Life and Relationships
In this eye-opening episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley takes listeners deep into the fascinating world of the conscious mind—what it is, how it works, and why learning to harness its power is one of the most important skills you can develop for both personal growth and relationship health. Building on the foundation she laid in Season 1, Episode 2 on the subconscious mind, Dr. Hensley explores how the conscious and subconscious interact, and how we can use the part of the mind we can control to influence the part we often think we can’t.

From a scientific perspective, the conscious mind is the realm of active thought—the internal narrator, the “little voice in your head,” the part of you that reasons, decides, and chooses. Dr. Hensley explains how this mental space is rooted in specific regions of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for decision-making, self-control, and planning. Unlike the subconscious, which runs much of our behavior on autopilot, the conscious mind allows us to pause, evaluate, and redirect our thoughts and actions. This distinction is critical in relationships, where automatic patterns—often rooted in attachment wounds—can derail connection if left unchecked.

Dr. Hensley draws on both neuroscience and attachment theory to show how training the conscious mind can dramatically shift the way we respond to relational triggers. She highlights studies demonstrating that when we intentionally engage the conscious mind—through mindfulness, deliberate self-reflection, and reframing—we can rewire neural pathways, reduce emotional reactivity, and replace destructive cycles with healthier patterns. This process, known as neuroplasticity, is not just theoretical; it’s the scientific foundation for real, lasting change in how we love, communicate, and resolve conflict.

Listeners will learn practical strategies for strengthening the conscious mind’s influence over the subconscious, from daily awareness practices to cognitive-behavioral techniques that Dr. Hensley uses in her coaching work. She explains how developing this skill allows us to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively, creating more safety, trust, and intimacy in our relationships. By taking charge of the thoughts we feed our subconscious, we can literally train our brains to default toward healthier beliefs, more secure attachment behaviors, and a deeper sense of connection.

If you’ve ever felt like you were stuck on emotional autopilot or powerless against old patterns, this episode will give you the tools and understanding to reclaim control. And for a full picture of how the mind works, don’t forget to revisit Season 1, Episode 2, where Dr. Hensley unpacks the subconscious mind and its powerful role in shaping our lives. Together, these episodes offer a roadmap for aligning your thoughts, beliefs, and actions—helping you create the life and relationships you truly want.

  • Episode 11, Season 2: Betrayal by the Dollar: The Hidden Wounds of Financial Infidelity
In this raw and eye-opening episode of The Dr. Sarah Hensley Show, Dr. Sarah Hensley and co-host Raina Joy Butcher dive deep into one of the most overlooked yet devastating forms of betrayal in romantic relationships: financial infidelity. Continuing their powerful financial series, Episode 11 unpacks the hidden dynamics behind the misuse of money in intimate partnerships — not just as a resource, but as a tool of control, secrecy, and even revenge. With real-life stories, personal reflections, and clinical insight, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and guidance for those silently suffering in relationships where money is used as a weapon instead of a shared value.

The episode begins by examining financial control and coercion — two insidious forms of financial infidelity that leave many partners emotionally paralyzed and psychologically trapped. Whether it's one partner dictating all financial decisions, withholding access to accounts, or using money to manipulate behaviors and choices, the hosts expose how financial power plays erode trust, dignity, and a sense of partnership. Many victims of this type of control feel emotionally blackmailed into staying, even when they desperately want to leave. Dr. Hensley and Raina highlight how the shame, fear, and isolation surrounding financial coercion often go unnoticed — yet the consequences are long-lasting and deeply damaging to a person’s mental health and autonomy.

The conversation then moves into secret spending, a subtler but equally destructive form of financial infidelity. From hidden credit cards to secret online purchases, the hosts unpack how these actions become betrayals of both financial trust and emotional intimacy. Often rooted in guilt, resentment, or unmet needs, secret spending fractures the foundation of honesty that secure relationships are built on. Listeners will hear why this behavior often creates a growing emotional gap — one that’s harder to repair than many realize. Dr. Hensley offers a compassionate take on the underlying insecurities and attachment wounds that often drive this type of behavior, providing listeners with language to recognize and address it in their own relationships.

The episode culminates in a candid and courageous discussion on revenge spending, the reactive, emotionally-charged use of money in the aftermath of a major relationship rupture.  Whether it's a response to a heated argument or triggered by a partner’s request for separation or divorce, revenge spending becomes a way to assert power or express hurt. Dr. Hensley and Raina both open up about their childhood experiences with financial conflict — Sarah recalling the volatility of her father’s financial behaviors, and Raina reflecting on how her mother’s money choices strained her parents’ marriage both during and excspecially post divorce. These powerful personal stories shed light on how early money dynamics shape our adult relationships and sense of self-worth. They also reflect on their own romantic relationships, sharing moments where money became a source of pain, confusion, and reflection.

To close the episode, Dr. Hensley offers practical and preventative guidance for couples looking to protect their relationship from financial betrayal. She shares thoughtful, research-based strategies to establish financial transparency, healthy boundaries, and ongoing dialogue about money as a shared value rather than a hidden battlefield. With warmth and wisdom, this episode affirms that while financial infidelity can feel like an invisible rupture, healing is possible with honesty, accountability, and mutual respect. If you've ever felt like money was used against you instead of with you in a relationship — or if you're simply ready to build healthier financial habits with your partner — this episode is a must-listen.
