If you’ve had trouble getting your financial house in order, you’re in for a treat because today’s episode features Tiffany Aliche, the Budgetnista! Rosetta and Tiffany have a great conversation that shares Tiffany’s journey but also reveals some very basic but powerful financial steps you can take to make more of your money right now. You won’t want to miss this one.
[Tweet "Automation is the new discipline when it comes to getting ahead financially"]
Building a vision for what would become a dream. The steps from where you are to where you dream you could be are not fast and they are not without pain. Tiffany Aliche’s dream to become a financial mentor wasn’t even fully formed when she first started helping people with her finances. She was a teacher and would often have conversations with the parents of her students about financial issues. When the non-profit school where she worked laid her off because of budget cuts, Tiffany decided that she should make a business doing the financial training that she loved. On this episode you’re going to hear her story of coming up through the ranks and working hard to become the Budgetnista.
When you first get started, finances are slim.Tiffany Aliche started her business from her laptop, living in her parent’s home at the age of 29. Her goal was to get out on her own and see the fruits of her labors in a thriving business. Soon she moved into a house where she paid $500 for a room each month. Over time, she’s grown her business to fully support her, to provide for paid, full time staff, and to bring some virtual help onto her team as well. Her speaking fees, which started at $100 are now over $10,000. You’ll hear a lot of hard work and patience expressed, but even more, the determination of a happy black woman who would not let her dream die.
[Tweet "Inconvenient money is the money that gets saved. Make it hard to get your cash"]
How you can begin to achieve your financial goals this year. One of the highlights of this episode is Tiffany’s practical approach to saving and investing hard earned cash. In this episode she shares 2 very easy things you can do to maximize your savings now and make it harder for you to tap into that savings for unneeded things. She’s also going to show you the power of multiple bank accounts, and the importance of having an online bank account. You’ll get so much value out of her financial tips, so make sure you listen.
The #1 tip for Happy Black Women who want to start their own business. If you’ve got a dream you want to pursue, a business idea that you want to put into action, there’s only one piece of advice the Budgetnista has for you. Get started. You can’t wait for everything to be in order before you act, because it never will be in order. You’ve got to fail fast. Get the mistakes made and learn from them. Then you’ll be ready to move past them to greater areas of success in a much shorter time frame. Tiffany’s passion comes out loud and clear as she talks about the importance of getting started, so take some time to invest in yourself by listening to this episode.

Trusting yourself when nobody else will.
If you want to start a business that can create the lifestyle you want, you have to have thick skin at times. Not everyone is going to support you. Sometimes the ones who should be cheering you on the most will be the ones who are the most negative about your dreams. Are you ready for that? Are you able to trust yourself, your ability, and your desire to make yourself succeed to the point that you can keep going when everyone says you're crazy? That's what Melinda Emerson had to do and her persistence has paid off with a million dollar business. Hear her story of pain and triumph, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.
Don't start a business by quitting your job!
Your dream is not enough to justify you quitting your day job. That's one of the messages Melinda Emerson shouts from the rooftops. You've got to take care of yourself and your family while you build that business dream. It's typically going to be a side hustle you do in your spare time while you keep on working at the job you want to leave. It's how you do things wisely, securely, and in a way that enables you to learn your lessons and make your mistakes while you have something secure to fall back on. Hear more of Melinda's practical advice for starting your own business on this episode.
You don't have to be everywhere on social media.
You just have to be in the right places. What ARE the right places? The social media sites that are right for you are the social media sites where your ideal customers hang out. It doesn't matter if it's your favorite or the one you hate. If it's where your ideal customers are, you've got to be there. In this episode, the small biz lady, Melinda Emerson shares how she learned that principle and how it's leveraged her business into a million dollar brand that has become well known and very successful. You'll love her practical approach.
You never lose in business. You either win, or you learn.
That's Melinda Emerson's favorite mantra for her business and that attitude of learning from mistakes has carried her to the heights of success. She's made all kinds of mistakes, which she's outlined in her book, "Becoming Your Own Boss in 12 Months," and it's those mistakes that have given her the expertise and education to turn the corner toward success and help others build their businesses without making the same mistakes. The typical meaning of the phrase "Happy Hour" is the time just after work when everyone goes to a bar or restaurant to blow off some stress after the workday. But Rosetta's guest today, Jullien Gordon, specializes in helping entrepreneurs and business professionals live every hour as a happy hour, especially in the work hours of the day. He believes that the way to be your best and make the most of your work life is to employ strategies that help you see your work and life through new eyes. On this episode you're going to hear Jullien explain what he means by "happy hours" and how he recommends you create them every day. You won't want to miss this!
Jullien's lessons about workaholism and proper boundaries. Before Jullien Gordon was married, he worked long hours every day. It was part of his regular routine and he loved it. But after he married, his wife helped him see that what he'd really done was build habits of workaholism that no longer served him well in his new life. When a baby was added to the mix he realized quickly that things had to change. Jullien's added boundaries to his work day now, even though he's an entrepreneur. He makes room for his family and fosters those relational moments that are so necessary for a healthy relationship. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Jullien shares two daily practices that keep his marriage tight and his priorities balanced, so be sure you listen.
Why you need boundaries for your work.Very few occupations or niches require a true "emergency" response (Doctors, nurses, etc.). You can and you should set boundaries to limit your focus on work activities. Not only will it provide you time to decompress and get the rest your body and soul need, it will also enable you to spend much needed time on hobbies or relationships that could be lacking. On this episode you're going to hear how Jullien Gordon found that balance for himself and how he advises clients to do the same thing in their busy lives
Get help for your business before you think you need it.Yes, adding more to the payroll is an additional expense. But if you do a proper search and find the right person, they will add money to your income rather than take money from your profits. In this episode Jullien Gordon shares how he reached out to his existing community to find just the right person to add to his team as a Virtual Assistant. It was a creative way that brought him very qualified applicants and enabled him to be freed up to create even more value and revenue for his company. You'll want to hear this one.
How you can increase revenue without adding one customer. You might think it's done through raising your prices, but you'd be wrong. On this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast, Jullien Gordon shares how he increased his revenue significantly without adding one client to his portfolio. It was a simple service that he was able to add to what he was already doing that gave tremendous additional value to his existing clients and increased his bottom line. It's an ingenious idea that you'll only hear on this episode of the podcast.
Outline of this great episode:Jullien Gordon has a passion for creating tools and experiences for self-discovery. When he is not speaking, coaching, or writing, he's all about helping people experience MORE HAPPY HOURS in their lives. This is how he measures success.
As Founder of The Focused Group, Jullien is bringing mastermind groups to the masses through his monthly group goal-setting and accountability meetings. After battling with workaholism during the early stages of his first company, he began exploring and experimenting with new ways to work. As a former soccer player and coach, he believes that life is a team sport, but most people are ambitious and alone. Jullien has come to recognize that community and accountability are the holy grail to success, not effort, and when you surround yourself with a strong team, you can have success without the stress, sacrifice, and solitude.
On a more personal note, he loves taking walks with his wife, swimming with his daughter, and hosting potlucks with his family and friends. He has been keeping a daily gratitude journal for the past 5 years that documents more moments like these and he is proud of the life he has already created and continues to create.

Today's guest, Jesse Krieger is an amazing example of the kind of life you can live if you strategically take action to make it happen. His publishing company, Lifestyle Entrepreneur Press is based around his personal success as a best-selling author, with his book hitting #1 in the Personal Success category on Amazon. He's leveraged his success to help other entrepreneurs who desire to build a brand or business around a book get that book published and ranking high on the best-seller charts as well. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Jesse shares some of his story and practical tips about heading into a life that allows you the freedom and income to pursue your dreams. You won't want to miss this!

You can build a brand and a business around a book, and Jesse Krieger is the man to show you how!Even if you wrote a best-selling book that would likely not be the means by which you'd gain a ton of income. But the content of the book does a number of things for you. #1 - it enables you to have a "business card" that is a book, a way for you to demonstrate your expertise in a tangible publication that people naturally respect. #2 - it lays the groundwork for you to build additional content off the topics you cover in the book, anything from online courses and video sets, to live events and speaking engagements. There's no limit to the ways you can leverage a book, if you know how to do it the right way. Today's guest, Jesse Krieger, is the man to help you do it, so be sure you listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman!
Start rough and improve as you go.Jesse Krieger may be a best-selling author and a publisher, but his success didn't happen on the first take. In this conversation he tells how he created a small, partly finished book, then modified it by adding more content, then continued to tweak and update it as he went along. That enabled him to get something finished and continue to build. Alongside his improvements, his business was growing at the same time. It's a philosophy he subscribes to and suggests that you follow. Don't wait for your "thing" to be perfect before you release it. Get it out there and make improvements as you go. That's how you learn what your market wants and needs and it's how you get yourself rolling toward creating the great things you have in mind. Learn Jesse's thoughts on this important issue by listening to this episode.
Have you heard of the "big rocks' philosophy of goal setting?Jesse Krieger refers to an illustration his mentor taught him that uses a jar, large rocks, small rocks, sand, and water. It's a great way to conceptualize how you should go about prioritizing things in your life and business. The original illustration was taught by Stephen Covey and it continues to be a guiding principle for many entrepreneurs and business people today. You can see the illustration in this video, or even better, listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast to hear how today's guest, Jesse Krieger, uses the concept to move his publishing empire forward month by month.
You want freedom? Then you'll have to develop structure in your life. That may sound a bit counterintuitive, but it's actually very logical. Freedom is like any other goal, you have to put things in place that will enable it to happen. You can't just live a free flowing life and expect your desired freedom to come about. Jesse Krieger, today's guest, suggests that you need to put the systems and tools in place that enable you to manage the demands of life in a way that affords you the freedom of lifestyle and time that you want. If you don't, you'll be at the beck and call of whatever comes your way. Find out how Jesse does it on this episode.

The road to becoming an entrepreneur was motivated by asking the deeper questions.Dr. Crystal Porter was working full time in a very intense role for a large company. Even though she often told her superiors that she couldn't continue to put in the hours that she was being required to give, they didn't seem to understand or even care. Her life continued to be a stressful and her time with family was getting more and more scarce. She had to ask herself the deeper questions about what she wanted from life and what was important to her. That time of questioning is what led her to move into her own business as a way to continue the income she'd become accustomed to but also allow her the time to be with family and do the things that were important to her. Sound familiar? Dr. Porter's story could be a great encouragement to you, be sure to listen!
A great example of niching-down to find a great opportunity.[Tweet "Finding a niche and serving it with great profit, on the Happy Black Woman Podcast"]
It may not seem very probable that a company could be built purely on the need that Black Women have to have expert advice about how to deal with problems related to their hair. But Dr. Crystal Porter has discovered that not only does a relatively smaller niche such as that provide her ample opportunities for a great income, it also enables her to help many, many people with a very serious area of need. It's an example of how there are many areas of need that nobody is servicing and how you can focus more narrowly to make even more income and meet more needs. Learn how Dr. Porter came to discover this great area of need on this episode.
Asking questions as a way of serving her audience.Dr. Crystal Porter explains on this episode how she goes about helping a wide variety of clients who have very different needs, and it's through the asking of good questions. She's able to hone in on the specific needs an individual may have by asking the right questions. Her example is a lesson for any entrepreneur. You may have an idea of what your audience needs or wants but until you actually hear from them, you won't really know. How can you ask better questions of your audience to discover the exact needs they have? Listen to this episode to hear how Dr. Porter does it and how you can take a similar approach in your business.
Working consistently within your values is powerfully important for the longevity of your business. In her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, Dr. Crystal Porter was motivated by the disharmony she saw between the type of hours and drive she was required to put in at her place of employment and the inner beliefs she had about the priority her family should have in her life. She didn't like that the sacrifices she was having to make in order to maintain her employment were at conflict with the needs she saw in her family. That's why she made the switch to entrepreneurship. What are your values about life and work? What are you willing to do and what are you not willing to do? How can you leverage your beliefs about family and work to motivate you to build the business you want and need? You'll find great encouragement from Dr. Crystal's story on this episode of Happy Black Woman.
