  • Steph Lowe - Nourishing Your Gut the Smart Way

This week welcome to the show Steph Lowe. She is a sports nutritionist, triathlete and cashew butter addict from Melbourne, Victoria. She teachs how easy real food living and performance can be.

    A little more about Steph:

    • She has been gluten free for nine years now, and literally because it makes her happy.
    • She has an undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science (James Cook University, Townsville).
    • She has a post graduate degree in Human Nutrition (Deakin University, Melbourne) and is one subject away from completing my Masters.
    • She is a long course triathlete currently taking a break from racing to reset the body and mind.

Her biggest piece of advice is to dive straight in – study, blog, create, share and enjoy the journey. Do what you love, love what you do.

Questions we ask in this episode:

    • How can we use carbohydrates to nourish and/or heal our gut?
    • Are shop-bought pre/probiotics beneficial or a waste of money?
    • What are the most common tell-tale symptoms of poor gut health?
    • Will LCHF work for everyone?

    https://shop.180nutrition.com.au/

This week I'm excited to welcome Steph Lowe, A.K.A. the natural nutritionist. So Steph is a sports nutritionist, triathlete, and cashew butter addict from Melbourne, with a strong focus on low carb, high fat for enhanced sports performance. So really, really interesting stuff. We talk about gut health, carbohydrate confusion, the effectiveness of shop bought probiotics, and why you may want to switch to eating cold potatoes. I'll be doing that very thing today. So without further ado, let's get into the show. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180, and I'm delighted to welcome Steph Lowe back to the show. Good morning Steph, how are you?

    Steph

Well thank you, how are you?

    Stu

[00:01:30] Yeah very good thanks, very good. So Steph first up, for all those that may not be familiar with your work, just wondered if you could share a little bit of your history and your journey for our listeners please.

    Steph

[00:02:00] Yeah for sure. So these days I run the Natural Nutritionist, which is a online hub that celebrates the importance of real food. And we work with a wide variety of people, certainly from beginners and potentially families that are looking to move into what we call a real food lifestyle, all the way up to our endurance athletes who are looking to optimize their metabolism and become a fat adapted athlete.

  • Dan Buettner: The Blue Zones Of Happiness

This week we welcome to the show Dan Buettner. He is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world – dubbed Blue Zones – where people live the longest, healthiest lives. His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.

Buettner now works in partnership with municipal governments, large employers, and health insurance companies to implement Blue Zones Projects in communities, workplaces, and universities. Blue Zones Projects are well-being initiatives that apply lessons from the Blue Zones to entire communities by focusing on changes to the local environment, public policy, and social networks. The program has dramatically improved the health of more than 5 million Americans to date. His books, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest, Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way, The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People, and The Blue Zones of Happiness were all national bestsellers. Buettner has appeared on The Today Show, Oprah, NBC Nightly News, and Good Morning America, and has keynoted speeches at TEDMED, Bill Clinton's Health Matters Initiative, and Google Zeitgeist. His speech in January 2018 at the World Economic Forum in Davos was chosen as "one of the best of Davos." Buettner also holds three Guinness World Records in distance cycling.

Questions we ask in this episode:

    • Your last two books, The Blue Zones and The Blue Zones Solution, are about longevity and learning to live like the world's centenarians. How, if at all, did that work inspire you to focus on happiness for your new book?
    • There are many books already out there about happiness. What's different about THE BLUE ZONES OF HAPPINESS?
    • With all your discoveries, what has the most significant impact on a person's overall happiness?
    • The book includes a Blue Zones Happiness Test. How did you design this test?

his week, we are doing it with the fantastic Dan Buettner. Now, if you're not familiar with Dan's work, he's a multiple New York Times bestselling author, and he was very famously known for the book The Blue Zones. If you've been listening to our podcast, you know we've covered the topic a little bit from time to time on the air, which absolutely fascinates me. Essentially Blue Zones are dubbed where people live the longest and are the healthiest. His New York Times Sunday magazine article about these places, "The Island Where People Forgot to Die" was one of the Times's most popular, and his National Geographic cover story, "The Secrets of Living Longer," was a finalist for National Magazine Award. I think the Blue Zones has even reached cult status where there's five of them in the world. And we'll certainly get into that today. But we're here today to talk about Dan's new book, The Blue Zones of Happiness, and what really drives happiness and the lessons he's learned from that. No doubt, you're gonna enjoy the show today, so let's go over to Dan Buettner. Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cooke as always. Good morning, Stuart.

    Stu

    Hello, mate.

    Guy

And our awesome guest today is Dan Buettner. Dan, welcome to the show.

    Dan

It's a delight to be here.

    Guy

Mate, I'm itching for this. This topic has come up so many times on our podcast over the last few years. Yeah, I can't wait to get stuck into it. Now, Dan, we ask a question on every show for a guest, and that is, if a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

    Dan

I explore traditional cultures, and I distill their wisdom for other people to use. How's that?

    Guy

    That's perfect.

    Stu

That would get me talking for sure, so I like it.

    Dan

I've had the good fortune to work for National Geographic for the last 15 years, and I've developed a bit of a specialty of finding extraordinary populations and then distilling down their wisdom, and we're very rigorous about measuring these populations and then also using vetted methodologies to distill down, what can we learn from them? So that's the general …

  • Sara Gottfried: Hormones & The Younger Protocol

This week we welcome to the show Sara Gottfried MD. She is a Harvard-trained MD, bestselling author, and leading expert on hormones. She is a board-certified gynecologist who practices functional medicine, but also a regular gal—a busy working mom, constant chauffeur for my daughters, devoted wife, and spiritual seeker.

In her practice, she helps women balance their hormones naturally—starting with their fork. She has a "food first" philosophy and passionately believe that food is the small hinge that swings the biggest doors when it comes to your health.

Questions we ask in this episode:

    • What is Healthspan?
    • What are the levers that most impact Healthspan?
    • How much of our health is determined by genetics versus the environment?
    • What can we expect from your book Younger?
    • If we could focus on just one thing to improve Healthspan, what would you recommend?

This week we have a very special guest for you. I just loved this podcast, and it was with Doctor Sara Gottfried. Now, if you're not familiar with Sara, she's a Harvard trained MD with over 20 years of experience. She's also the author of The New York Times best selling books, The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet and her latest book, Younger.

[00:01:00] I kid you not, we had a blast on this podcast. We covered all sorts of topics from her own personal experiences to her thoughts on middle-age and how we can slow that aging process, but even from a disease-free perspective. On top of that what's clear about Sara is that she's a very honest, loving person, and leads by example in everything that she does. She's putting out such a great message to the world. It was just a privilege to have her on the podcast today and share this. We even get to talk about the Costa Rican term for Avila and Tequila. It's safe to say Stu was on fine form today as well as we kick off in 2018.

Anyway, I know you're going to enjoy this podcast. Let's go over to Sara Gottfried. Enjoy.

[00:01:30] Hi this is Guy Lawrence, I'm joined with Stuart Cook as always, good morning Stu.

    Stu

    Hello, mate.

    Guy

Good to see you. A wonderful guest today is Sara Gottfried. Sara, welcome to the show.

    Sara

Thank you, so happy to be here.

    Guy

It's beautiful Sara. Like Stu was just saying, we've been following you from afar for so long, so it's nice to finally get round to having you on the podcast and exposing you to our listeners.

    Sara

    Same here.

    Guy

Sara, we ask a certain question on every show and that is, literally, if you were say on an airplane or in the street and you sat next to a stranger, and they asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

    Sara

    I would say I'm a troublemaker.

    Stu

Yeah, that's what we like to hear.

    Sara

[00:02:30] Well, it depends on the context. What I usually say is, I'm a change agent, I am a change agent for health and wealth, because your greatest wealth is your health. Our healthcare system is broken. I really want to change all those things, I feel like that's my mission, that's the reason why I'm here. I does depend on context. I used to say I'm a bored certified gynecologist, I practice functional medicine. Half the people would turn on their heel and go the opposite direction, so it's evolved over time.

It's true privilege to interview the guests we have on the show, and with a new year upon us, I think it's healthy to reflect upon the year that was. I enjoy taking a trip down memory lane. My hope is that you do to.

  • Brian Mackenzie: Pushing All Boundaries Of Health & Wellness

This week we welcome to the show Brian MacKenzie. He is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the books Power Speed Endurance, and The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner.

Questions we ask in this episode:

    • When it comes to training, I've heard you say quality vs quantity and methods are many, principles are few, please explain?
    • What areas of exercise modalities would you encourage the weekend warrior who wants a rounded approach to their health, movement and longevity?
    • You free dived with Great White Sharks. Why?
    • Where does your passion for breathwork come from?
    • You're currently collaborating with Stanford University's Neuroscience Dept. on how breath can influence our 'state', what have you discovered?
    • I was intrigued by your book Unplugged, what can the reader expect from this?

And this week, our fantastic guest is Brian Mackenzie, who is a human performance and movement specialist. Not only that, he's a top bloke and a lot of fun and just got a stack of wisdom and experience behind him, so it was great to have him on the show today. He's studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, methods along with heat and cold exposure as well. And we also dive into his more recent project, The Art of Breath, which of course I'm pretty passionate about as well. We even get into his book, Unplugged, and why he recently free-dived without a cage with great white sharks as well, which just blew my mind. So it's all in there. I don't care what you do. There's nuggets of wisdom for everyone in this podcast, and I have no doubt you're going to enjoy.

And I also want to mention, don't forget guys, we are offering all the podcast listeners a 15% discount on any of our 180 Nutrition products at the moment. All you have to do is go back to the shopping cart and enter the discount code 180 podcast and you can receive a 15% discount.

[00:01:30] Yeah, what I will mention as well is check out our new organic hemp blend protein as well, guys. It is phenomenal. We literally just launched it this week, and the laws have been changing around hemp. We've been excited to bring this protein to the marketplace as well, cause it's an all plant-based protein, and personally, I'm in love with it at the moment. Anyway, you can check that out as well, and the discount code applies for that too.

Anyway, let's go over to Brian McKenzie. Enjoy!

[00:02:00] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook, as always. Good morning, Stu.

    Stu

    Hello mate!

    Guy

And our awesome guest today is Brian Mackenzie. Brian, welcome to the show, dude.

    Brian

Thanks for having me, boys. Pleasure.

    Guy

It's been a long time coming. Your name has popped up on different views and podcasts over the last 12 months at least. So it's like oh, we gotta get Brian on the show. So yeah, very appreciative of your time, mate.

    Brian

    Yeah, absolutely.

    Guy

So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

    Brian

    I don't know.

    Stu

    Don't speak to strangers.

    Brian

[00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do.

    Dr. Joe

Good to be with you, mate.

    Stu

    Ha ha, there he is.

    Guy

We've actually had a few Ozzie impressions come on over the years, mate, I reckon that was the best one we've had.

    Dr. Joe

    Oh God.

    Guy

Just in case, I love kicking off with this question for the show, and I've no doubt I'll get a great answer this morning as well, and for our listeners who might not be familiar with your work, and because you travel so much. When somebody asks you, a stranger, what you do for a living, what do you usually say, Joe?

    Dr. Joe

[00:04:00] Well it's funny that you say that because I was on a flight just the other day, and I was 40 minutes to get from one side of the airport to the other, and I was walking very quickly and I passed the person that I knew was going to be on my flight, and I knew she was going to sit next to me. I don't know how I knew that, but anyway. She got on the plane, and she looked over and she pointed at the seat, and I got up and I helped her put her bags above me, and then she sat down next to me. And I said, "So, how long have you been an attorney?" And she looked at me and she said, "What? How did you know I was an attorney?" And I said, "I just know". She said, "I work so hard on not looking like an attorney". I said, "oh I knew you were an attorney", and I said, "oh let me guess, you work for the government". She said, "how did you know that?" I said, "I don't know, I just knew"

[00:05:00] And so we started talking and she said, so what do you do. And I said, I always start off with the conservative answer, "I'm an author". And then she said, well, what do you write about? And I said, well, I write about the neuroscience and the biology of personal change and transformation. And she said, "what!" And I said, "yeah, like how do we change, how do we create a better life for ourself, how do we live with more passion and more wholeness". And from that moment on, from the time we flew ... took off to the time we landed we never stopped talking. And I had so much to do but she had question, after question, after question. And it's a topic that, I think, most people are interested in, because I think we innately believe that what this new science is telling us, we innately believe that it is possible for us, to create a better lives, better life for ourselves and to change who we are. So, it was a great conversation.

This week, our awesome guest is Dominic D'Agostino. What a legend this guy is. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast again. I know I say that pretty much most episodes, but it's true. We dove into the topic of ketosis today, ketogenic diet, and we hit him up with as many questions possible to get us clarity on probably now which is the most searched diet within Google, which is the ketogenic diet, interestingly enough.

If you're unfamiliar with Dominic's work, he is an assistant professor at the College of Medicine, Molecular Pharmacology, and Physiology at the University of South Florida. He works to develop and test nutritional and metabolic therapies, including ketogenic diets and ketogenic agents for seizures, epilepsy, metabolic disorders, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, muscle wasting, and cancer, to name a few. He also recently just worked on a project with NASA as well. It's safe to say this guy is extremely well researched, knows his stuff, but more importantly is a top guy too.

If ever you've been wondering about the ketogenic diet, does it apply to you, we cover from all angles — from the elite athletes to the other end of the spectrum, for people whose health might be in crisis, and to us folk in the middle as well. We cover it all and hopefully it will reveal a lot more that you didn't know about the ketogenic diet today, so I have no doubt you are going to enjoy.

Don't forget as well guys, we are currently running a 15% discount code back at our headquarters, 180nutrition.com [inaudible 00:01:52] off all our natural products for our podcast listeners. All you need to do is go back to the shop and use the discount code "180podcast" during checkout. We've got things to help you support your gut, from our glutamine to our organic greens [inaudible 00:02:08] and of course our smoothie former as well. They're all there to serve a purpose. If you haven't tried it yet, now is the chance to give it a shot with the discount codes. That's 180podcast during checkout.

That's all I'm going to say today. I trust you if you're going to leave a review on iTunes, you're going to do so anyway, if you're enjoying this podcast. Let's move on to Dominic D'Agostino, this one's awesome. Enjoy.

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook as always. Good morning, Stuart.

    Stu

    Good morning, mate.

    Guy

Our fantastic guest today is Dominic D'Agostino. Dom, welcome to the show.

    Dominic

    Thank you for having me.

    Guy

    Appreciate it, mate.

    Dominic

    Great to be here.

    Guy

It's a great pleasure. I'll just say as well, Stu, your camera's just dropped off, mate. You've disappeared, but as long as we can hear you.

    Stu

    Yeah, how about that?

    Guy

There you go, he's back. [inaudible 00:03:02] matters for those people in audio. Dom, we always ask the same question on the show every week when a new guest comes on, and that is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

    Dominic

Yeah, that happens sometimes. I tell them I'm a scientist. Usually I don't go more in-depth than that.

    Guy

I bet it'd be a can of worms. If they started prodding slightly, say "Yeah, what kind of scientist?" What would you say then?

    Dominic

I study the brain, because my formal training is neuroscience, so … and that usually opens another can of worms, you know? They ask, "What part of the brain do you study," or something like that.

Dr. Breus is on the clinical advisory board of The Dr. Oz Show and appears regularly on the show (>30 times in 4 years).

    • How can we hack our jet lag?
    • What supplements can we use to help us sleep?
    • How can we improve our home environment for sleep?
    • We were intrigued by your book - The Power Of When. Can you explain a little about the book.

And this week, our awesome guest is Dr Michael Breus, also known as, "The Sleep Doctor." Now, I have to say, I loved this episode. His enthusiasm and knowledge for this topic was amazing. Now, we've covered sleep a few times on the podcast before, but again, there was so many nuggets of wisdom to come out of this and the way I thought about sleep and my own personal sleep and how we apply it. And obviously, we know how passionate Stu is about sleep as well. And it was just great and I have no doubt you're gonna love it. [00:01:00]

[00:01:30] He covered things from jet lag to circadian rhythms to what we can do and hacks and tips and all sorts of stuff. And it was awesome. He has a specialty in sleep disorders and is only 1 of 163 psychologists in the world with these credentials and distinctions. Stu

    Good morning, Guy.

    Guy

And our awesome guest today is Dr Michael Breus. Michael, welcome to the show.

    Dr. Breus

Thanks for having me, Guy and Stuart. I really appreciate it. It's gonna be a lot of fun.

    Guy

Yeah, it's gonna be fantastic. Stu's a kid in a candy shop as always with this topic. So we'll see what happens. But the question I always ask everyone on the show when they come on, Michael, is if a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

    Dr. Breus

I would tell them that I teach people how to be better in bed.

This week we welcome to the show author, speaker, comedian and internet Youtube sensation JP Sears.

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence from 180 Nutrition, and of course welcome to another fantastic episode of The Health Sessions, where we are connecting with leading global health and wellness experts to share the best and the latest science thinking empowering us all to turn our health and lives around. I want to apologize up front first because it's been a few weeks since our last podcast episode, but Stu had to go back to the UK, so we took a podcast sabbatical for the last few weeks, but we are back with a vengeance because our awesome guest this week is JP Sears. I loved every minute of this episode. [00:01:00] He is the man behind the viral comedy videos, and if you haven't seen any of them you've probably been either, A, not on social media, or B, living under a cave, but becoming Ultra Spiritual, and he does an amazing job of getting a great message out there, helping light up the world, but doing it with so much satire and comedy at the same time. It's just fantastic and if you haven't seen any of his videos, boy, definitely check them out after this podcast today. According to Wikipedia, JP Sears is a life coach, an internet comedian. He is known for his satirical parodying of veganism, gluten free ads, New Age beliefs, and other modern happy topics with his video series Ultra Spiritual. Did I tell you I'm a bit dyslexic? I can't even get my words out sometimes. [00:01:30] Like I said, this podcast goes off in all sorts of directions and it was great to see the other side of JP today as well, as we get into some profound topics, may I say it. The other thing I wanted to mention as well, we are offering, if you haven't tried any of our 180 products back on our website, we are offering a 15% discount for all our listeners. That's right, you can get our famous smoothie super food mix, our greens, the l-glutamine to help sugar cravings and improve the gut health as well. If you go back on there, we even got the new bars up there now, which we're super excited about, and of course, all these products fit in with our values and beliefs, and thousands of people are using them every single day. [00:02:00] The 15% discount code if you want to take advantage of it at the moment, you simply enter at checkout "180 podcast." That's 180 podcast in the discount field during the checkout, and you can enjoy 15% off at the moment. Anything else I need to add? That's probably it at the moment. Enjoy this podcast with JP Sears. Beautiful.

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined by Stuart Cooke, as always. Good morning Stu.

    Stu

    Good morning Guy. [00:02:30]

    Guy

Our awesome guest today is JP Sears. JP, welcome to the show mate.

    JP

Guy and Stu. Thank you for having me on brothers. Happy to be here with you.

    Guy

It's an honor dude, it's an honor. Now, mate, we ask one question to every guest on the show, and [crosstalk 00:02:44]-

    JP

Man. Short show. I like that.

    Stu

    Very short.

    Guy

    Straight off the bat.

    Stu

    Short and sharp.

    Guy

That is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? [00:03:00]

    JP

[00:03:30] Honestly, as that's been happening, my answer that I'm giving in real life is I don't know. There's so many facets of what I do. I think the heart and soul of what I do is I use connection and creativity to help people hopefully live more meaningful lives. My rambling on answer is I make videos, I do a lot of speaking and performing, got a book. I work with different companies, help them promote their products with brand deals. All that equals is I'm confused. Do a bunch of stuff which is all fun for me at least.
