Sometimes if you’re lucky someone reaches out to you in the early days when you’re first trying to stop drinking and shows you how to take the first steps.
And for me, that person was Dawn Nickel.
8 years ago, when I first thought that I needed to stop drinking and decided to try life without wine, Dawn reached out to me.
I was traveling with my son and husband from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia for a long weekend, my first in 5 years where I wasn’t going to drink, and Dawn picked me up for coffee, drove me to a beautiful beach and we talked all about drinking and not drinking and where I was and what I wanted and what I was afraid of.
She’s amazing. And she’s also a pretty big deal.
Today on the podcast I was thrilled to interview her and talk about women and the way we recover, from all things and in all ways.
I hope you love the conversation as much as I did.
Dr. Dawn Nickel is a respected thought leader in the women’s recovery sphere and (along with her daughter Taryn Strong) the founder of SHE RECOVERS Foundation, a not-for-profit grassroots organization that inspires hope, reduces stigma, and empowers women in or seeking recovery for substance use and/or mental health challenges.
Dawn is a strong advocate for the view that every woman in or seeking recovery must be supported to find the tools and pathways that will work best for her as an individual.

Do you wonder why drinking alcohol helps you feel relaxed and then leaves you awake at 3am? Or why do you have trouble moderating how much you drink?
How is it possible that alcohol is both a depressant and a stimulant?
Why does a substance that makes you feel euphoric later leave you feeling so low with anxiety and a hangover?
And is it actually true that alcohol is actually good for you in small doses? [spoiler alert: the answer is no]
My guest today is William Porter, the author of Alcohol Explained and Alcohol Explained 2: Tools for a Stronger Sobriety. I’m a big fan of his work and the way he breaks down a scientific approach to what happens to the body and mind when you consume alcohol into something that’s easy to understand.

In early sobriety, sober treats are important, not an indulgence.
Don’t underestimate their power, because sober treats are essential to helping you both stop drinking and keep going once willpower runs out and motivation fades
When you’re walking away from drinking you need your time without alcohol to feel rewarding and kind - not like a punishment or deprivation.
And most of all you need sober treats because you’ve been stuck in a “reward rut” for way too long.
After decades of 'adulting' often our universe of rewards and pleasure options have shrunk to the equivalent of ‘bars and bakeries’ (alcohol and sugar).
You deserve more.
Sober treats will open your imagination and help you find and enjoy new sources of pleasure and comfort.
Today, I am diving into how to quit drinking without deprivation or relying on willpower by using sober treats.

Today marks ONE YEAR since I started this podcast! I can’t believe it. When I look back on the past year, I’ve been a little scared everytime I release an episode but mostly happy and grateful. I’m amazed to see women like you listening and reaching out and telling me that the podcast is helping them.
Launching this podcast has been incredible and one of the most exciting and satisfying projects that I’ve ever done.
In the past year I released 57 episodes, with 46 incredible guests and we’ve hit just under 70,000 downloads!
I’ve also released 13 solo episodes on topics that I think are really important in helping women stop drinking like strategies for your very first week, mistakes a lot of women make when quitting drinking and all the things I’ve learned in the 5 years since quitting drinking.
But most importantly, I want to say THANK YOU for taking time out of your day to listen to this podcast. Thank you for reaching out and telling me the parts that helped you, made you laugh or helped empower you or feel less alone.
In this episode, I’m going to share some of my absolute favorite moments of the podcast over the last year. The things my guests have shared that really stuck with me, inspired me, gave me new coping tools, and made me think and rethink my own ideas, perceptions and approaches.
I hope you enjoy listening to some highlights from the podcast over the last year and I hope you take away some fresh insight and inspiration to keep going.

In today’s episode, Gill and I discuss

We all have negative thoughts at times and often can be our own worst critics.
And if you have a tendency to be hard on yourself, the automatic thoughts you have can have a big impact on your emotions and the way you experience and interpret the world around you.
It’s normal to feel sadness, anger, worry and loneliness at times. But getting stuck in negative thought patterns can trigger heightened feelings of anxiety, fear, self-pity, and insecurity.
The good news is that you can learn to identify and challenge automatic negative thoughts, which can relieve stress, self-doubt and let you feel significantly more confident and positive.
Today, my guest Shelby John is here to talk about understanding our negative thought patterns.
Shelby is a mom, wife, and entrepreneur. She's been sober since July 2002 and her own recovery journey led her to become a social worker, trained in trauma therapy, coaching techniques and other clinical skills. As a therapist, Shelby helps women heal their past trauma, using EMDR. therapy. Online, she gets to guide them into building the confidence they need to love their lives beyond recovery.

Let's talk about sugar, diets and early sobriety.
This topic comes up all the time with women who are trying to stop drinking because they’re fearful of replacing overconsumption of alcohol with food.
Common advice in early sobriety is to let go of your ‘food rules’, go ahead and eat the Peanut M&Ms, have dessert and don’t get too hungry. But a lot of women resist this advice.
Instead, they try to combine their efforts to stop drinking with a new eating program or diet, only to find in a few weeks that they’ve gone back to drinking and are starting the whole process again.
There are also other reasons to stay away from dieting and I’ve got the perfect guest to talk about it all.
Ingrid Michelsen Miller is a Diet Recovery and Weight-Neutral Life Coach who helps women find freedom from binging and weight-cycling. Ingrid was one of the first friends I met in early sobriety and we quit drinking just 60 days apart.
Over the last 5 years, we’ve navigated life without alcohol together (and the day this episode goes live, April 15th, 2021, is Ingrid’s 5 Year Soberversary!)
In this episode, Ingrid and I dive into diet culture: what it is and what it does to us, why we should let go of food rules in early sobriety, and the reason that trying to make our bodies smaller is counterproductive.

Did you know that you can live alcohol-free and still enjoy your life?
You can still be social, still hang out with your friends who drink and also transform internally.
You can let go of the things in your life that aren’t serving you, but also keep the people and activities that bring you joy.
You can have everything you’ve always wanted.
That’s what we’re talking about today, embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle without assuming a label.
My guest today is Kayla Lyons. Kayla is the founder of 1,000 Hours Dry, an alcohol-free community and host of The Dry Life Podcast.
In this episode, Kayla and I discuss her sobriety journey, our drinking culture, how big alcohol markets to consumers, and all the benefits of not drinking.

Let’s talk about the fact that most women who realize that they have a problematic relationship with alcohol don’t actually ‘want’ to stop drinking.
Most of us had a lot of good times drinking over the years. At one point drinking was a lot of fun, and sometimes it still is. We had amazing vacations, girl’s nights and romantic date nights with alcohol.
And even though you might be worried about your drinking, and are tired of headaches and hangovers, you likely don’t actually want to stop completely.
You probably can’t imagine your life without happy hours and wine tastings.
And here’s the good news: you don’t have to ‘want’ to stop drinking to take an extended break from it and discover that life without alcohol is actually happier, healthier, more satisfying and more fun than it was when you were drinking.
My guest today is Camille Kinzler. Camille is an alcohol-free lifestyle/habits expert who is passionate about helping women who wake up at 3 am saying “I wish I didn’t have that last glass of wine...again” (re)learn how to destress, unwind, and connect instead of instinctively reaching for their go-to cocktail.
Camille and I are going to talk about all the strategies that can help you stop drinking (even though you still want to).
In this episode, Camille and I discuss:
