Sobriety & Pain Overlap: Chelsea breaks down how recovery from addiction and healing from chronic pain mirror the exact same mind-body processes. Finding Commonalities: Why shifting focus from external differences to shared internal struggles unlocked both her sobriety and symptom relief. Rewiring "Brokenness": Recognizing that neither addiction nor chronic pain means you are broken—the brain is simply executing learned, re-wireable patterns. Surrender & Acceptance: Paralleling 12-step surrender with mind-body healing: stopping the frantic chase for external fixes and accepting present discomfort to take away its power. Riding Out the Urge: Chelsea shares how 13 years of sobriety taught her to normalize uncomfortable thoughts and sit with distress rather than react to it. Early Symptoms & Medical Odyssey: Chelsea describes experiencing debilitating symptoms starting from childhood and worsening into her teens and college years, including autonomic nervous system dysregulation (severe chest tightness, shortness of breath, urinary retention, lightheadedness, and fainting). She accumulated diagnoses such as POTS, fibromyalgia, migraines, scoliosis, and central pain processing disorder. Discovering the Mind-Body Approach: After years of managing symptoms and believing she would be chronically ill for life, she was introduced to Alan Gordon’s book The Way Out and Steve Ozanich’s The Great Pain Deception. These resources introduced her to modern neuroscience, TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome), and the mind-body connection. The Role of Sobriety & Trust: Chelsea explains that drawing on her decade of experience in addiction recovery was crucial to her healing. It taught her to trust the process, look for commonalities rather than differences, remain open-minded, and filter for what resonated with her. Managing Flare-Ups: When asked how she would handle waking up with severe pain or symptoms today, Chelsea notes that she views symptoms as an indicator from a "silly brain" that she is likely overthinking, stressed, or avoiding an underlying emotion, and facing that emotion brings relief.
