How often do you hear someone say they’re “not a math person,” or sociable, or creative? Or, conversely, how many times have you heard someone described as a “natural?” All too often, we accept that we are born with inherent abilities that we cannot change. In other words, a fixed mindset. Stanford-trained mindset expert Eduardo Briceño has been working to transform that narrative. As co-founder of Mindset Works with Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, Briceño says the key to success is not simply effort, focus, or resilience, but the growth mindset that creates them. In this episode, we discuss our obsession with labels, strategies for shifting our mindset spectrum from fixed to growth-oriented, how to objectively open our minds to new or opposing thoughts, performing self-assessments to understand our progress toward a growth mindset, and our biological predisposition for survival rather than happiness or thriving.
