Today in the podcast, I'm very excited to bring to you an interview I was asked to do with Nicole Farrier on her podcast.
Nicole is a fitness professional with a bachelor's in exercise science and nutrition, a certified personal trainer, competitor, and online coach.
We had an important and informative conversation about some of the cultural issues in gymnastics related to body image, nutrition, and changing the approach to strength and conditioning.
Nicole and I talked a lot about these issues and some of the stigmas around aesthetics versus performance.
We explored the need for culture change in the sport so we can best support and help athletes to be healthy, happy, and high performing for the next 10, 15, 20 years.
We discuss:
Injury prevention issues in gymnastics.
How to communicate with younger athletes especially when their skill level is at the level of an adult.
Food is fuel.
There's a time and a place for conditioning.
Why we need to teach kids how to use technology as a tool and not as a vice.
OCD elbow research paper; from the moment you start to have pain, to the moment you are fully back to gymnastics, what does that entire process look like?
And...
Should parents be allowed to watch training sessions?
We appreciate you listening!

Today on the podcast I am super flattered to welcome back Chellsie Memmel for another epic episode.
The 2005 World All-Around Champion, the third American woman to achieve this feat, and Beijing Olympic Team member.
Chellsie now 33 years of age and mom of 2, made a phenomenal gymnastic comeback in 2020 documenting her inspiring journey on her YouTube channel, and competed again after 9 years at the U.S. Classic and National Championships in 2021.
I wanted to have Chellsie back on the show to have a conversation about the differences and benefits of adding weight training to gymnastics, and how her ideas on conditioning have changed and developed from when she was younger training for the Olympics versus now as an adult gymnast.
We discuss:
What does a week of training and conditioning look like for Chellsie Memmel?
How Chellsie implemented external weight training into her conditioning.
What advice Chellsie would tell her younger self.
Chellsie’s top tips on taking care of your body and recovery to keep training.
Understanding the fear of gaining weight from eating or lifting weights and the advice you need to know.
Why gymnastics isn’t just for kids it's for adults too.
And…
Everything you need to know about the first Gymnastics Camp for Adults.
We appreciate you listening!

Today in the podcast, I am excited to have senior British artistic gymnast Ellie Downie.
Ellie from Notts Gymnastics Club has won multiple international medals and titles and is the All-around 2017 European gymnastics champion, the first British gymnast to win a major all-around title.
I love talking to athletes about their experiences in gymnastics, trying to learn from them, and pulling out some value for parents, coaches, or gymnasts that are still active in the sport.
There's so much that we can learn from people like Ellie, who have had a long, successful career, and also I think it's important to not only highlight what got them to where they are but also, what would they do differently?
What would they like to see, change in the sport right now?
Ellie gives a lot of practical advice about what she has done, I really enjoyed this conversation and can't thank her enough.
We discuss:
Ellie Downie’s key to recovery.
Advice to coaches who are trying to achieve longevity in their athletes.
Ellie’s thought on giving gymnasts take a break from competitions or training during puberty.
Injuries, anxiety, and stress; what Ellie has learned to cope with these.
Why Ellie doesn’t use Twitter anymore.
The important role of Ellie’s mom in her life and gymnastics career.
And…
How Ellie’s training has involved over the years and the use of weight training.
We appreciate you listening!

Today on the podcast, we are bringing you part two of our Hip Medical Inservice. Which is training I provide for doctoral students at Champion Physical Therapy clinic in Boston to educate medical providers on different injuries in gymnastics. Last week was a pretty in-depth episode looking at the anatomy and the biomechanics of the hip, assessments, and radiology findings.
In part two, this week, I bridge together the sections of part one and talk about testing and what can you do for assessments and hands-on treatment.
I discuss how to work with someone coming back from an injury and design a program specifically for them.
Plus useful information and research on surgeries, as dealing with somebody who has a labral repair, or a post-op hip can be a little intimidating and often tough to deal with.

Today on the podcast we are taking a little bit of a detour and bringing you some medical information.
As many people know, I'm a Physical Therapist and a Sports PT that works with a lot of athletes and treats a lot of different injuries. One thing I see a lot of is hip injuries.
As part of my job role, I do a lot of work on educating medical providers on different injuries in gymnastics.
I run inservice training for doctoral students at Champion Physical Therapy clinic in Boston teaching anatomy, biomechanics, different assessments, and treatment styles.
I was asked by the students to do an in-depth inservice on hip issues.
This one had some really valuable information so I wanted to make sure I put it up as a podcast to share with the gymnastic community.
I know there are a lot of physical therapists out there who are looking to learn more about hips and feel more comfortable treating people who are either having surgery or not.
But I hope this can also inform coaches too, building knowledge around injuries and the return to sports process.
We appreciate you listening!
