  • Ep. 56 - Ynes, Laura & Lila Lopez-Sanchez - Shipibo Curanderas, Ayahuasca, & Healing

Una nota: para ver las  notas del episodio en español,  visite mi sitio web a:  https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/ynes-laura-lila

Hey everybody! Episode 56 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friends Ynes, Laura, and Lila Lopez Sanchez. The three women are curanderas, or doctors, from the Shipibo people. Ynes is the mother and teacher of Laura and Lila. I have worked with the three of them on and off for the last decade and so it was a pleasure for me to sit down and catch up with them. They come from a lineage of Shipibo doctors and are a real joy to work with and learn from. They all have a tremendous dedication to this work and bring knowledge, wisdom, strength, love, and lightness to their work which is beautiful to witness. They don’t do many interviews so it was an honor to have them come on and share a bit of their wisdom. The interview is a mix of English, Spanish, and Shipibo. Thank you to my friend Jessica Begin for doing the translation. I hope trust you will gain from this interview. Now with over 50 years of dedicated experience and ancestral knowledge, Ynes offers a very powerful and beautiful connection with plant spirits…

Maestra Laura, known for her beautiful icaros, has also worked extensively with her mother, both in Peru and abroad. She brings an incredible wealth of knowledge that has been passed down for generations in her family line.

Maestra Lila grew up with her grandparents and highly-respected Onaya healers. At the age of 13, Lila was the victim of a strong energetic attack. She then moved to live with her mother, Maestra Ynes and dieted a mighty tree. The diet succeeded in curing that evil harm and served as the gateway of Lila’s path as a healer…”

  • Ep. 55 - Adam Aronovich - Ayahuasca, Medical Anthropology, Research & Meaning

Hey everybody! Episode 55 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Adam Aronovich. Adam and I met in the Amazon jungle working at the plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light, where he originally came down working on his doctoral thesis. He ended up living, studying, and working in the jungle for five years. I think Adam brings a really unique and important perspective to this work, being able to merge his academic work and observations with his time spent learning from plants and working as a facilitator with guests going through a ceremonial experience. This podcast ending up going quite long, over four hours, which I thought it may, but it’s filled with a lot of insights, observations, and knowledge from Adam’s time and life. It was a pleasure for me to catch up and converse with him and I think you all will gain a lot out of this episode. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

"Adam is a doctoral candidate focusing on Medical Anthropology and Cultural Psychiatry. He is an active member of the Medical Anthropology Research Center (MARC) and part of the Ayahuasca Community Committee at the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. In the last four years he has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon, where he has been doing qualitative research in collaboration with ICEERS, the Beckley Foundation, and, more recently, the Centre for Psychedelic Studies at Imperial College, where he is also a visiting student. Beyond his work conducting and coordinating research, Adam facilitated workshops in the Peruvian Amazon and he regularly facilitates workshops in Mexico. He is also a process facilitator and integration support coach in private practice, the co-host of the upcoming podcast "Healing from the Healing Path", and the co-founder of Hidden Hand Media, a creative agency in the space of transformation and technology.”

  • Ep. 54 - Scott Hussa - Ayahuasca, Facilitation & Processing

Hey everybody! Episode 54 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Scott Hussa. Scott and I met in the Amazon jungle working at the plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light, where he facilitated ceremonies. It was a pleasure for me to sit down and reconnect with Scott and learn a bit more about his story, which he opened up on a very personal level. We talked about his journey, plant medicines, and the art of facilitation. Scott has a lot of wisdom to share and does his work in a masterful and integral way. I think you all will really enjoy this episode. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

"As an adoptee from South Korea and raised in the United States, he has been exploring his understanding of identity, family, community, and society throughout his life. Scott spent 6 months in Japan, before making his way to Seoul. What was initially going to be a one-year living abroad experience became an eleven-year exploration of his ethnic background and culture.

While in Korea he was involved in three startup businesses and spent his last five years working as an Executive Coach and Training Program Consultant. He studied Journalism and Advertising at the University of Oregon.

Scott’s innate curiosity lead him to Peru in 2014, and he quickly found himself working at a medicine center facilitating guests in retreat. Known for his compassion and presence, Scott has been working full time as a facilitator for the last several years and is currently apprenticing with his Shipibo maestro Laura Lopez.”

  • Ep. 53 - Deanna Rogers - Ayahuasca, Integration, & Compassionate Inquiry

Hey everybody! Episode 53 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Deanna Rogers. Deanna and I met in the Amazon jungle working at the plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light, where she was facilitating ceremonies. Deanna has a broad range of tools from Somatic Experiencing to Gabor Mate's Compassionate Inquiry to studying psychology. She currently works helping people to integrate their plant medicine ceremonies. Deanna has a lot of experience in this field and brings a really solid, present, grounded, and balanced approach to her work. I really enjoyed sitting down with her, catching up, and having her share in her wisdom. I hope you all enjoy this episode as well. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

"Deanna has been working with plant medicines for the last decade and with the Temple of the Way of Light since 2013. In this time she has supported hundreds of guests through their medicine journeys and also embarked on her own deep healing with the plants through a traditional study of dieta.

Deanna holds a non-judgmental container and a deeply compassionate space to allow whatever needs to arise, to arise. Her commitment is to help people uncover and work with the root of their illness or condition so that they can live a more connected life. This is led through a process of Inquiry, somatic processing, and a balance of guiding and listening. Her work is deeply influenced by her training with Dr. Gabor Mate and his Compassion Inquiry model, Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, and through her study with Indigenous Healers in the Amazon. She is currently embarking on her Master of Counseling.

Deanna offers preparation and integration sessions before and after plant medicine experiences to help ground and live the healing journey. Her goal is to empower people to cultivate deep connections to self, to help integrate trauma and align to their path going forward.”

  • Ep. 49 - Bill Park - Permaculture, Matsés and Indigenous Wisdom, & Climate Solutions

Hey everybody! Episode 49 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Bill Park. Bill and I met in the Peruvian Amazon about a decade ago. Bill created an Amazonia superfood company that works with indigenous communities and aims to empower them and preserve and regenerate the biodiversity of the jungle. He also started an NGO, Acaté Amazon Conservation, that works with the Matses community, aimed at “preserving the Amazon Rainforest in partnership with its protectors.” I had the opportunity to visit the Matses with Bill, working on a project of creating a plant medicine encyclopedia in Matses, by the Matses, and for the Matses. I learned a lot on that trip and have a lot of respect for Bill and the projects he is working on and the knowledge that he has. I think Bill is putting real solutions into action and I always enjoy talking to him. I consider Bill a philosopher in the truest sense and he has a lot of wisdom to share. I hope and imagine you all will get a lot out of this episode. To support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below.

"Bill brings a strong understanding of sustainable agriculture and natural products to Acaté. His interest in ecological agricultural practices and agroforestry was strengthened during his years living in Perú and exploring the Amazon. Bill is co-founder of Eco Ola, a company based in Perú that is pioneering application of permaculture techniques to revitalize eroded and abandoned areas of deforestation. As Acate’s Co-Founder and Director of Acaté Perú, Bill believes that strengthening local economies and providing choices for renewable resources in conjunction with the local communities is a critical element for conservation. His relationship with the Matsés began in 2003.”

  • Ep. 47 - Publio Valle - Yoga, Buddhism, Sacred Plant Medicines & Life

Hey everybody! Episode 47 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Publio Valle. Publio and I met while working together at the Amazonian plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light. Publio has taught yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry there, facilitated ceremonies, and also managed the center. Publio has a varied background of practices including yoga, meditation, Buddhism, and plant medicine work. He is a gentle and beautiful man and has a beautiful ability to convey many topics into easily digestible words. It was a pleasure for me to to sit down with him and hear him share his varied knowledge. "My father, a healer from a traditional Brazilian lineage of curanderos,  was my first teacher…

In India, I received deep learning as a volunteer and then coordinator of the Alice Project, a school teaching and researching meditation techniques with children from some of India’s poorest villages.

In Asia I also discovered Insight Meditation, and trained in Vipassana meditation in India, Indonesia, Thailand and at the Pa Auk Monastery in Burma. In South India, I studied at Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana..

Back in Brazil I worked as coordinator of the “Living in Group” program at the University of Light, one of the most mature communities in Brazil…

A key part of my work and process is not just to locate and support the healing of the emotional wounds that can act as blocks to our healthy mental and physical well-being. Through the process of going deeper, below the limits of the conscious mind, we can also locate the precious gems which exist in each one of us: those unique gifts that are waiting to be discovered – and amplified – in service to something bigger than ourselves.”
