Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Today host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C speaks to Dr. Daniel P. Brown about attachment needs in children and adults.
Dr. Brown received his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst MA in molecular biology and his Ph.D. in Religion & Psychological Studies at the University of Chicago. He received a Danforth Fellowship given for promise in teaching excellence, and as part of that fellowship received specialized training in how to teach. While in graduate school he was particularly interested in interdisciplinary studies. At the University of Chicago he worked in religion & psychological studies, the history of religions, anthropology, human development and clinical psychology. Erika Fromm, Ph.D. a noted hypnoanalyst, served as his primary clinical mentor–a relationship that spanned 35 years.
Dr. Brown has taught hypnotherapy for 38 years. His books on hypnosis include a standard textbook on clinical hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and Hypnoanalysis (with E. Fromm), Hypnosis and Behavioral Medicine (with E. Fromm), and Creative Mastery in Hypnosis and Hypnoanalysis, on the permissive style of hypnotherapy. While in graduate school in Chicago he commuted to the University of Wisconsin, Madison for part time studies in the Buddhist studies program, where he learned Tibetan, Buddhist Sanskrit, and Pali.

Terry Marks-Tarlow, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist who lives in Topanga and maintains a private practice in Santa Monica, California. Terry works with adults, adolescents and couples. She is a Research Associate at the Institute of Fractal Research in Kassel, Germany, and sits on the Advisory Board of the California Dance Institute.
Terry has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 30 years. During psychotherapy, she taps into the embodied wisdom available from yoga plus her dance background. Terry loves art and draws profusely, illustrating many of her own books. Generally, she strives towards a balanced life, aiming to embody her own values in order to "walk the talk." Dr. Marks-Tarlow is available for psychotherapy, talks, and trainings through her website.

Dr. Rachel Altvater is a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is the owner of Creative Psychological Health Services, a psychologist at Gil Institute for Trauma Recovery and Education, an affiliate faculty member at Loyola University Maryland, the Continuing Education Director of Starbright Training Institute, and a board member of The MD/DC Association for Play Therapy.
Dr. Altvater published two articles in the International Journal of Play Therapy on her research of technology use in play therapy and is a contributing author in Integrating Expressive Arts into Counseling Practice: Theory-Based Interventions (2nd ed.) and Integrating Technology in Modern Therapies: A Clinician’s Guide to Developments and Interventions. She is the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Alumna of the Year from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Washington, D.C. Campus, and the 2018 Outstanding Play Therapy Research Award from the Maryland/DC Association for Play Therapy.

As a teacher and lecturer, she has broken through traditional barriers presenting at numerous conferences, introducing the innovative concept of integrating shamanism, mindful awareness, and resonance into psychotherapy

Gretchen Schmelzer, PhD is a licensed psychologist, trained as a Harvard Medical School Fellow. She is a trauma survivor, who has worked for twenty-five years with the complex issues of trauma, integration and behavior change across every level of system from individuals, to groups, to large systems and countries, including her role as the expert consultant Frontline for their documentary on Alaskan survivors of priest sexual abuse (aired April 19, 2011).
She leads programs using leadership development and trauma-informed emotional intelligence to help communities worldwide engage in the difficult public health issues confronting them such as AIDS and Domestic Violence. She is working on a book on long-term trauma and you can read more from Gretchen at her website, Emotional Geographic.
