In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Josh Messarge (our buddy from film school, longtime friend and collaborator). Film Production on both Union and Non-Union shows are our bread and butter. It's how we pay the bills, and get paid to hone our skills in the process of filmmaking by working under the best in the biz. James, Josh, and I share the good and bad of what we've experienced when working on set. Whether that's background extra mishaps, severe head injuries, or temperamental fellow crew members. We expose all the craziness. Not really. But there's some great stories in here!

In this episode, James and I discuss a couple of things that shaped us and have continued to shape us. It's a late-night recording session for us old salts, so we start off with tackling the broad subject of social media and the effects of the internet on our relationships and daily lives, including how we perceive our own reality. Then, I tie the first part of our conversation to a book that greatly inspired and encouraged me through the years: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. It's a fantasy novel that has popped up at the best and worst times of my life and gave me a new way of looking at my childhood and the effects of a developing mind.

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE thing that shaped his life and I try and relate to. James goes deep, well in the water, into the subject of scuba diving and how it shaped his relationship with his father during his adolescence. He details the process of getting certified and the mishaps that occurred during this adventure. The way I relate to James' story is by sharing the time my wife and I went whitewater rafting in Columbus, GA. The intensity of braving Class 5 rapids mixed with torrential downpour during a lightning and thunderstorm and hail. It's about to get energized!

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Caleb Radecki (a friend from our old film school & filmmaker). Caleb is the animator and creator of CandyClub, a YouTube channel known for great animated skits and live-action videos of obscurity and comedy. Caleb and the gang from Jonesport Pictures put together an animated TV pilot entitled "Blizzard Beak" that you can find on his channel. In this conversation, Caleb digs into his past and talks about Adult Swim and how that specific branding of comedy and animation stuck with him over the years in creating his own style. That inspiration led not only to his animated shorts but also to his first short film, entitled "Human Garbage", and he continues to work independently and creatively in that realm.

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Sean Barlow (a friend from our old film school & editor). Sean opens the conversation with the subject of comedy and his perspective on what he finds funny. His love for situational comedy leads us down a path discussing some of our favorite comedic moments from our favorite films. We also discuss how comedy can be found in some of the darkest or grittiest parts of a movie that a general audience would find uncomfortable. We even talk about contemporary meme culture and the comedy that exists there. Sean's background in film includes attending the same film school as James and I, and he's found his niche in editing narrative film. This takes us into a segue of comedic timing with cutting scenes and that can be effective on an emotional level for setting up a horrific moment.

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Kristofer Seppala (longtime friend and collaborator). For Kristofer, living in Finland and Switzerland for the first seven years of his life has shaped his perspective of culture and ways of living in many ways. He delves deep into his love for film and his perspective on classic cinema in relation to how a lot of Americans in our film school were not aware of those films that he grew up on. His acceptance and understanding of the American public school system even took time to curate with a little bit of culture shock at play. We talk about how social interactions and customs can vary country to country, and specifically in a country like the United States that is a melting pot for multiple races, cultures, and subcultures. This was a great conversation!

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Yul Brynner (longtime friend and collaborator). For Yul, being an African-American male has shaped his life in many ways. He delves deep into his childhood, his first experiences with racism and how he's fought to remain a level of normalcy while growing up in environments that have threatened his creativity and ways of expressing himself. James and I indirectly empathize with Yul's conundrum and it's a common one these days. Racism is a difficult topic, and we keep our organic conversation to a level of personal attention rather than shifting into politics. And it all ends with love and the relationship with share with each other.

Animation has been a very influential form in the medium of film & television and it's brought the three of us to the table to discuss its many facets that have affected us on both technical and emotional levels. The conversation covers everything animation. All the way from the techniques used in 2D drawing and its relation to light, to even shedding light on the penis police of Disney animated projects. We keep to our usual format, but fuel the conversation with Josh's personal attachment to animated stories.

Second, I delve a little deeper into my experiences of moving around the U.S. more times than I could exactly recall. I try to decipher how my perception of the world around me differs from people who are in one place their whole life.

In this episode, James and I discuss two things that shaped our lives. First, James goes into describing his extreme experience in the Iraq War (EXPLICIT), how it shaped him in ways only some of us could ever grasp being that close to death, and how it affects you. Second, I take it down a notch and describe my life as a skateboarder in my early adolescence. I describe how the sport of skateboarding is perceived as aggressive and unproductive, but for me it was very shaping and gave me something to hold onto as I constantly moved around the country (not an Army brat).
