And if you have never heard of the "highly sensitive person" - you will want to hear our discussion about that!  Dr. Michael Alcee was an amazing, highly-talented guest (WHO HAS ALSO DONE A TEDX TALK!!) on the episode today and I am honored he said "yes" to my invitation t join me. • S1 E10: How your career and your mental health are interconnected - and what to do about it! with Kali Wolken

    Send us Fan Mail

One of the "emerging trends" of 2022 (in response to the COVID-19 pandemic) include women's issues in the workplace. Today, my friend and fellow therapist, Kali Wolken, joins me to talk about career issues and how they overlap with mental health issues. We focus on specific ways women can better support themselves (and other women!).  We also talk about stepping away from a job, volunteering, and how self-esteem is woven throughout. We hope you find meaningful things in this episode!

Here's a bit of info about Kali:
If I had to pick a single quote that represents my perspective on career journeys it would be from J.R.R. Tolkein's The Fellowship of the Ring: "Not all who wander are lost." Life is full of twists and changes and the unexpected, and sometimes, we find ourselves wandering more than we'd like. We worry that we've become lost on our journey, but I believe we may just need a new perspective. As a licensed counselor in the states of Indiana and Michigan, I love supporting individuals in their career journeys. Prior to opening my company The Lookout Point, I served clients at Still Waters Professional Counseling for 11 years. My favorite part in working with people is hearing their story and knowing that a little outside perspective and direction can help clients recognize how their past impacts their present and how they can make informed decisions about their present to shape and direct their future.

  • S1E9: How humans are like (and can learn from ) TREES! with Dr. Kelly Savery

    Send us Fan Mail

When I first connected with Dr. Kelly Savery, I thought, "I already love this." :)  I have always felt a connection to trees. I have trees all over my house, around my house. I find myself pondering and wondering about things when I'm with trees. And frankly, I just thought I was WEIRD. lol

Well...along came Dr. Kelly Savery. And she shares the MOST amazing ways we can further connect with trees, nature, and the world around us in more beautiful ways. She talks about how she uses trees and nature within the therapy room to aid in grounding and developing goals. This. Episode. Will. Inspire. You.  FOR SURE.  Here is a bit more about Kelly. (WHO...by the way is from the UK - so her accent is super awesome too!)

Dr Kelly Savery is trauma psychologist in the UK, who was born and raised in Bermuda. As a trauma psychologist, her goal is to help people find their roots and build a strong core so that they can grow into strong, resilient people. Dr Kelly works with people who’ve endured trauma of all kinds, but she specializes in working with individuals who have experienced sexual abuse.

Dr Kelly loves nature. Her work is inspired by lessons we can learned from trees.

  • S1E7: When two psychologists talk about things that matter: Jerry "Sunshine" Novack

    Send us Fan Mail

What do you get when you have two psychologists, talking about mental wellness??  You get THIS EPISODE! We talk everything from traumatic growth to male/female expectations (as they relate to emotions especially!) to "how did we get here?" discussions. Jerry's background in the services, as well as coaching/fitness/wellness, is evident in his overall style and is such a great contribution to this episode (and the field!). Here is a bit more about Jerry "Sunshine" Novack.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have one resource that could provide fitness, financial, professional, social, and psychological information and coaching?  This is exactly what Dr. Jerry “Sunshine” Novack provides.  A certified personal trainer (NASM) since 1997, Dr. Sunshine received his BA in Public Relations in 1995, his MA in Counselor Education in 2006, and his PhD in Counseling Psychology in 2012.  After completing his doctorate, Dr. Sunshine commissioned as an officer and active-duty psychologist in the US Air Force.  In 2019, Dr. Sunshine left active service under honorable conditions and accepted work as a civilian psychologist. Dr. Sunshine transitioned out of clinical work into coaching in 2021 and is currently adding a financial coaching credential to his resume’.  Dr. Sunshine has published multiple articles and book chapters in a variety of academic journals and popular media.  He was given the name “Sunshine” by his brothers and sisters in B.A.C.A. ( https://bacaworld.org ) as a nod to his “Sunny New Jersey disposition.”

  • S1E4: Small things that make a big difference at home

    Send us Fan Mail

I have found my professional twin! A fellow psychologist who loves kids, loves parents, loves helping, and loves sharing small ways that can make a big difference with parents and kids. This conversation with Krysten Taprell, aka The Therapist Parent, was so exciting because it brings real-life therapy skills into the living room. Listen in as she shares her advice for sleep, dreams, and mindfulness with kids - that frankly....also applies perfectly to adults! Thank you for listening to this episode of #thingsyoulearnintherapy.

As with one of the other episodes on grief, I am cross-listing this episode on my other podcast Kids These Days need us to make words matter for good because I know the content is powerful for both audiences.

Here is a bit about Kristen. Be sure to check out her social media pages - they are FILLED with great images for parents!!

I am a Psychologist with over 20 years experience working with children and families. I have worked in many settings including schools, Private Practice and Government agencies. I have extensive experience working with people on the Autistic Spectrum as well as conducting diagnostic assessments. In this time I found that I was seeing the same issues coming through my door, requiring the same strategies. While some difficulties will need regular sessions with a qualified Psychologist, sometimes parents just need a few tips and creative ideas to bring change to their children's lives. I hope to offer you proven strategies and playful activities that children respond to.

  • S1E3: Grief and the many ways it comes up

    Send us Fan Mail

The grief of losing a loved one can be overwhelming. And to lose a child...unfathomably difficult. Though most of us haven't experienced such a tragic loss, we can learn from the many things that today's guest, Michelle Benyo, shares with us. Grab a box of tissues and your journal. We've all experienced grief in the last two years. It's with a grateful heart and open mind that I share with you this awe-inspiring episode of #thingsyoulearnintherapy.

Just an FYI... I have cross-listed this episode with my other podcast Kids These Days need us to make words matter for good because it was such a great episode that I think is relevant for both audiences.

Michele Benyo is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist®, a parent coach, and the founder of Good Grief Parenting. After her 6-year-old son died of cancer, her 3-year-old daughter said, “Mommy, half of me is gone.” This heartbreaking statement focused Michele’s career as an early childhood parenting specialist on the impact of grief on young children, particularly after child loss. Michele equips parents and other caring adults to recognize young children’s grief and to provide the support children need to cope well with any loss. The desire of Michele’s heart is to see families live forward after loss toward a future bright with possibilities and even joy.
