Welcome to 15mins.Today the home of English Shadowing. I'm your host Gavin and this is InTense Episode 30. Well guys in this episode we will be quickly looking at something useful, prepositions of time and specifically the 3 words “at on and in.” And I'm going to do them in that order, because basically we start small and work big in this instance.
So we start with “at” which we use for a specific time, then we use “on” which we use for day or date and then we use “in” which is for the big things, in a month, in a year. So for example “at 10:00 AM,” “on Friday” and then “in 10 years” or “in 2020.” So it is very simple, you start small and you go big. When you start with time and it can be a specific time like “at 10:00 AM,” “at 10:00 PM.” It can also be a certain thing like noon, noon is “at 12” so “at noon, at midday.” So those we use “ at 4” with “ on” we use usually for day or date, “on my birthday, on January the 3rd, on the 3rd of January, on Friday, on Saturdays.” “I do not enjoy working on December 25th.” or “on Christmas Day, on Christmas.” So the last one is of course the big one which is ”in.” So “in December, in 2022, in the 1970s, in the 21st century, in the next decade, in the Bronze Age.” So this is the big one, so it starts more with, at a specific time, on a day or a date and then in for the big things. OK, so let's get started with our examples!
Drill Sentences:
Did Jane have a meeting at 11:00 PM? No, she did not have a meeting at 11:00 PM.
Is the conference on Tuesday? Yes, it is on Tuesday.
Is the conference on Tuesday? No, it is not on Tuesday.
Will the sales target increase in 2020? Yes, it will increase in 2020.
Will the sales target increase in 2020? No, it will not increase in 2020.
Does Peter have lunch at noon? Yes, he has lunch at noon.
Does Peter have lunch at noon? No, he does not have lunch at noon.
Will you meet John and Jane on the 3rd? Yes, I will meet them on the 3rd.
Will you meet John and Jane on the 3rd? No, I will not meet them on the 3rd.
Do you enjoy having a coffee at dawn? Yes, I enjoy having a coffee at dawn.
Do you enjoy having a coffee at dawn? No, I do not enjoy having a coffee at dawn.
Does Mary work on Christmas? Yes, she works on Christmas.
Does Mary work on Christmas? No, she does not work on Christmas.
Is Peter's birthday in January? Yes, his birthday is in January.
Is Peter's birthday in January? No, his birthday is not in January.
Will life be better in the future? Yes, life will be better in the future.
Will life be better in the future? No, life will not be better in the future.
Well that's it guys. I hope that helps you out, you can go online you can search Google for “prepositions of time” and you can find lists, and you can look at those and they will help you figure out how to use it, but as I said it's quite simple, you start small with “at” bigger with “on” and then for the big one you use “it.” I hope you find it useful, keep repeating and catch you next time, bye!

Oxford Dictionaries has declared “climate emergency” the word of the year for 2019, following a hundred-fold increase in usage that it says demonstrated a “greater immediacy” in the way we talk about the climate.
Defined as “a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it,” Oxford said the words soared from “relative obscurity” to “one of the most prominent — and prominently debated — terms of 2019.”
According to the dictionary’s data, usage of “climate emergency” soared 10,796 percent.
Oxford said the choice was reflective of the rise in climate awareness, with the focus specifically on the language we use to discuss it. The rise of “climate emergency” reflected a conscious push toward language of immediacy and urgency, the dictionary said.
In May, the Guardian updated its style guide to clarify that “climate emergency” or “global heating” would be favored over “climate change” or “global warming” (although the original terms are not banned) to better reflect the scientific consensus that this was “a catastrophe for humanity.”
Hundreds of cities, towns and even countries have also declared “climate emergencies” during 2019 — from Scotland in April and the UK parliament in May to Canada, France and the city of Sydney in Australia.
“In 2018, climate did not feature in the top words typically used to modify emergency, instead the top types of emergencies people wrote about were health, hospital, and family emergencies,” the selection panel said. “But with climate emergency, we see something new, an extension of emergency to the global level.”
And for those protesting that “climate emergency” is two words, as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s resident linguist explained in 2017, single words can consist of two parts. Such multipart constructions, like “heart attack,” “man-of-war” or the 2017 American Dialect Society word of the year “fake news,” are commonly accepted by linguists as words. “Climate emergency” beat the words “climate crisis,” “climate action,” “climate denial,” “extinction,” “flight shame,” “global heating” and “plant-based,” which were on the shortlist.
The dictionary’s word of the year is chosen to “reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the passing year” and should have “lasting potential as a term of cultural significance.” “In 2019, climate emergency surpassed all of those other types of emergency to become the most written about emergency by a huge margin, with over three times the usage frequency of health, the second-ranking word,” Oxford said. Previous choices for word of the year include “toxic” in 2018 and “youthquake” in 2017.

741: Cambodia to ban elephant rides at Angkor Wat temples
Cambodia will ban elephant rides at Angkor Wat temples by early next year in response to pressure from animal groups, a spokesperson of the Aspar Authority said last week. The Angkor Wat temple complex attracts millions of tourists each year. In 2018 for instance, the number of tourists topped six million, and many of them enjoyed elephant rides around the temples, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). Against this backdrop, animal rights groups have expressed concerns at the risk of mistreating animals.
The death of a female elephant in 2016 of heart failure after working in extremely hot weather triggered outrage on social media. A petition was launched on change.org to ask the Aspar Authority to cease elephant riding in archeological sites, according to Associated Press.
Three years after the elephant’s death, Aspar Authority promised to stop the services and release all 14 elephants into their natural habitat by early 2020.
The authority’s spokesperson, Long Kosal, told the AFP that “using elephants for business is not appropriate anymore,” adding that the elephants are already old.
Long Kosal said five of the 14 elephants had been transported to nearby community forests. “They will live out their natural lives there,” Long Kosal told the AFP, adding that the company owning these elephants will keep looking after them.
Long Kosal added that the Aspar Authority aims to stop elephant riding in the park, but tourists can still visit their protected habitat to get a close look and take a photo with the elephants, according to The Phnom Penh Post.
