667: Prehistoric settlement in Turkey bears telltale signs of modern woes

Overcrowding. Violence. Infectious diseases. Environmental degradation. It may sound like the worst of modern mega-cities.

But people encountered these very same problems when the first large settlements were being established millennia ago as humans began to swap a nomadic hunter-gatherer existence for a lifestyle centered on farming, scientists said on June 17, based on findings from a prehistoric site in south-central Turkey.

The researchers examined 742 human skeletons unearthed at the prehistoric ruins of Catalhoyuk, inhabited from 9,100 to 7,950 years ago during a pivotal time in human evolution, for clues about what life was like at one of the earliest sizable settlements in the archeological record. At its peak, 3,500 to 8,000 people lived there, with the researchers calling it a “proto-city.”

The residents experienced a high rate of infections, as seen in their teeth and bones, probably caused by diseases spreading in crowded conditions amid challenges to proper hygiene, the researchers said. Overcrowding may have contributed to interpersonal violence. Many skulls bore evidence of healed fractures to the top or back of the cranium, some with multiple injuries.

The shape of these injuries indicates they may have been caused by hard clay balls found at Catalhoyuk that researchers suspect were used as projectiles from a sling weapon. “A key message that people will take from these findings is that our current behaviors have deep roots in the history of humankind,” said Ohio State University biological anthropologist Clark Spencer Larsen, who led the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“The people living in this community faced challenges of life in settlements addressing fundamental issues: what to eat, who produces the food, how is the food distributed, what are the social norms for division of labor, the challenges of infection and infectious disease in settings where there is limited sanitation, the strategy of interpersonal relationships involving animosity in some instances,” Larsen added.

As the world emerged from the last Ice Age, with warmer conditions conducive to crop domestication, there was a shift from foraging to farming beginning 10,000 to 12,000 years ago among people in numerous places. The people grew crops including wheat, barley and rye and raised sheep, goats and eventually cattle. Some homes boasted wall murals, and other art included stone figurines of animals and corpulent women.

Catalhoyuk’s residents lived in clay brick structures akin to apartments, entering and exiting through ladders that connected the living areas of houses to the roofs. After death, residents were buried in pits dug into the floors of the homes.

Catalhoyuk, measuring about 13 hectares, was continuously occupied for 1,150 years and appears to have been a largely egalitarian community. It was eventually abandoned, perhaps because of environmental degradation caused by the human population and a drying climate that made farming there harder, the researchers said.

666: Preserving pets for posterity
666: Preserving pets for posterity

Many people treat their pets like a member of the family. When a beloved family pet passes away, some owners choose to have them stuffed and preserved by a taxidermist; however many people know little of the art of taxidermy. A skilled taxidermist is able to retain the animal’s appearance just as it was before it died and capture a realistic pose so that it can stay by its owner’s side even after death.

Taxidermist Kuo Wei-hung says “We respect both the feelings of the pet and its owner. According to the owner’s wishes, we may retain the animal’s skeleton and organs, but whatever we do we are always respectful toward the animal.”

Although Kuo would watch his father, a taxidermist, preserve animals and acquired some basic knowledge through osmosis, Kuo’s original desire was to work in the food and beverage industry. However, as his father’s health began to deteriorate, Kuo would lend a hand and came into contact with his father’s clients. Kuo began to understand the heartfelt wish of the pet owners to preserve their loved one after death, and was extremely moved by the affection owners displayed for their furry friends. Kuo also wanted to carry on the family business and these twin feelings motivated him to enter the world of taxidermy.

Kuo began by studying the physical composition, unique characteristics and habits of each species of pet animal. This meant that when discussing preservation methods with clients, Kuo could fully understand a pet’s unique qualities and also predict what challenges he might encounter during the process. On receiving a new specimen, Kuo first cleans internal organs and feces from inside the body. He then asks the owner whether they wish to preserve their pet or opt for cremation. If the client wishes to preserve the animal, Kuo will then carry out a second stage of cleaning and ask what type of posture they would like their pet to adopt before starting the modeling process. All of this work has to be carried out in a cool environment at room temperature.

The next step involves allowing the body to dry out, which is either done by air-drying or through freezing. While this is happening Kuo must pay attention to any areas of the body that may begin to sag, and will stuff these areas with cotton wool as necessary. Once the animal is thoroughly dried out, Kuo uses modeling clay to fill in any contours and lines around the eyes, and will also cover any scarring to the skin.

664: Surgical procedure cuts risk of pneumonia complications from broken ribs
664: Surgical procedure cuts risk of pneumonia complications from broken ribs

An avid cyclist was out riding with a friend when, trying to evade a small animal that suddenly appeared out of nowhere, he was thrown from his bike. He sustained a broken leg and broken ribs, and air became trapped in his pleural cavity (the space between the chest wall and the lung). He was sent to the emergency room at the Hsinchu branch of National Taiwan University Hospital. One month later the man returned for a follow-up treatment, and told the doctors how happy he was to be able to be riding again.

According to Tu Hsiung, a doctor at the Hsinchu branch, broken ribs due to external trauma to the chest are seen frequently in the trauma clinic at the emergency room. They are often seen in senior citizens who have fallen over, people involved in bicycle accidents or those who have fallen from a height in the workplace.

In humans, the thorax is formed of the collarbone, 12 pairs of ribs to the left and right, and the breastbone and thoracic vertebrae. The ribs form a cage surrounding the chest, protecting important organs including the heart and lungs, as well as the liver to the lower right of the diaphragm and the spleen to the lower left. The ability to breathe depends upon the movement of the ribs, through the contraction of the diaphragm and the respiratory muscles.

When somebody has an accident, the first clear symptom of the patient having sustained broken ribs is localized pain. In serious cases, broken ribs can be life threatening, for example when it leads to tension pneumothorax or a hemothorax (air or blood trapped in the pleural cavity, respectively) and difficulty breathing. Acute, life-threatening complications can arise when pain makes it difficult to breathe or cough up phlegm, leading to pneumonia and eventually septic shock (blood poisoning).

The treatment for broken ribs begins with stopping the pain, to ensure that the patient feels comfortable. Efficient respiration is important if pneumonia is to be prevented. If the pain is not stopped, the patient will not want to breathe deeply, and the breathing will gradually become shallower, reducing the amount they will be able to cough. Eventually, this could lead to the development of pneumonia.

With improvements in medical treatments and increasing focus on patients’ quality of life, doctors have developed the surgical stabilization of rib fractures. The main objectives of this technique are to reduce the amount of pain the patient with broken ribs is in, to prevent the emergence of complications and to reduce the chance of mortality and the length of stay in hospital. This will help the patient to recover more quickly and to be able to return to work.

According to clinical statistics, the surgical stabilization of rib fractures procedure can significantly lower the chances of the patient developing pneumonia, reduce the treatment period and length of hospital stay by half and even cut the mortality rate by 30 percent.

663: TKK fried chicken among 25 best fried chicken brands in New York
663: TKK fried chicken among 25 best fried chicken brands in New York

The Taiwan-based TKK Fried Chicken (頂呱呱炸雞) chain has been named among the 25 best fried chicken brands in New York, according to gourmet website Eater (New York).

TKK made the list as the Taiwanese restaurant chain offers its food by emulating American-style fried chicken.

“… You can wash down a fairly conventional fried chicken product — supposedly invented in emulation of American fried chicken — with a vast range of hot and frozen beverages, many syrupy sweet,” Eater said in a statement on its website.

“The chicken comes in three degrees of hotness, from which you should pick the crispy spicy designation. Dipping sauces are available, but skip ’em!” the website said.

Eater, in particular, recommended TKK’s Kwa Kwa Bao (呱呱包), a fried chicken skin roll stuffed with sticky rice along with shiitake mushrooms and pork in fried chicken skin.

Joining forces with beverage brand Kung Fu Tea, TKK Fried Chicken opened its first store in Manhattan at the end of 2018. In addition to its fried chicken offerings, the store also serves Kung Fu Tea bubble tea selections.

Liu Jen-hao (劉人豪), special aide to TKK Fried Chicken Vice President Shih Tsung-yueh (史宗岳), told CNA that the restaurant chain is very grateful to the recognition of the gourmet website, which selected the brand as one of the top best brands in New York.

Unlike American fried chicken, Liu said, TKK foods have a specialty taste of thin skin, which has created a niche market in the competitive New York market.

In addition, through the cooperation with Kung Fu Tea, TKK can enrich its menu by offering drinks, in particular bubble milk tea, Liu said.

After New York, Liu said, TKK is scheduled to open a new store in Boston Aug. 23, and more outlets will arrive in Philadelphia and Texas in the near future.

TKK Fried Chicken, founded in 1974 and headquartered in New Taipei, has 66 stores in Taiwan and two in Shanghai, according to its website.

Before its recommendation of TKK Fried Chicken, Eater posted an article on its website in early March, recommending 38 restaurants in Taipei, including Fu Hang Soy Milk and soup dumpling chain Ding Tai Fung.

Tomic stripped of £45,000 Wimbledon prize money for tanking/

Australia’s Bernard Tomic was stripped of his entire £45,000 Wimbledon prize money on Thursday for tanking in his first round match which was over in just 58 minutes.

"It is the opinion of the referee that the performance of Bernard Tomic in his first round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not meet the required professional standards," the All England Club said in a statement.

"Therefore he has been fined the maximum amount of £45,000 which will be deducted from prize money."

When Tomic was asked if he was happy with the effort he was making on court at Wimbledon, he snapped:"Next question" and refused to answer other questions.

Tomic has run foul of the Wimbledon authorities in the past. Two years ago, he was fined after admitting he had faked an injury and complained of being bored in defeat to Germany’s Mischa Zverev.

Left-handed boxers win more fights

Left-handed people are better fighters than their right-handed counterparts because they catch them off guard, new research has found.

Researchers studied data on the careers of 10,000 professional boxers and mixed martial arts fighters. They found that when a left-handed fighter fought a right-handed competitor, around 54 per cent of the time the left-handed fighter got a higher rating.

According to the "fighting hypothesis," right-handed people are more used to fighting fellow right-handers due to the relative rarity of left-handed people. As a result, left-handed people have a competitive advantage in combat because their opponents are likely to be disoriented by their fighting stance.

661: Taoyuan fisherman nets rare ‘golden bighead carp’

After a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the nation on Thursday, fisherman Chang Wen-tien went out fishing on Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan. He unexpectedly netted a “golden bighead carp” measuring 75cm from head to tail and weighing 6kg. Chang, over the moon with his catch, says it is the first time he has seen such a large golden-colored fish in all of his 30 years fishing at the reservoir. He believed it had been frightened by the earthquake.

The silver carp is a freshwater fish. As their head is proportionately large compared to the body, they are commonly known as “bighead carp” in Taiwan. Silver carp, a common sight at the reservoir, are also known as the “garbage collectors” as they hoover up algae and plankton as food. Due to their rapid rate of growth, silver carp are also known colloquially as “Big Mac.” Most are a mottled black color.

Chang says this particular bighead carp is not especially large but its golden color is quite unique. Chang consulted a fish specialist who said its special color was probably caused by albinism. The colorful carp caused a sensation with fellow fishermen and tourists who crowded round for selfies, giving Chang his 15 minutes of fame. Several days later, Chang is still floating on cloud nine.

“Elders believe catching a rare fish is a good omen,” says Chang. He speculates that the golden bighead carp, frightened by the earthquake, surfaced from the bottom of the reservoir to a shallower depth and then swam straight into his fixed net.

Chang says that because the carp sustained multiple injuries while being caught, it would only have been able to survive two or three days in a fish tank, so he brought the fish home on the same day it was caught and cooked it for supper. Chang says its flesh was firm but tender and suitable for battering and deep frying or, alternatively, braising in soy sauce. Chang recommends the live fish restaurants within the Shihmen Reservoir for their delicious food.
