  • Lizzo, Beyonce and Hannah

This week, Mandy (Kate’s away!) is speaking to Hannah Diviney – writer, disability advocate and editor-in-chief of Missing Perspectives.

Hannah was a 2021 finalist for both the Australian Women’s Weekly Women of The Future Awards and the 2022 Young Australian of The Year Awards. She’s an impressive and effective disability advocate who has successfully challenged some of the biggest names in show business to address ableism and make positive change.

Hannah began her disability advocacy over concerns over disabled people’s representation in film, particularly after the harmful portrayal of the autism community in Sia’s film Music. She also launched a petition to lobby Disney to create a princess with a disability, which has so far garnered over 60,000 signatures and received support from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively. Hannah also went unexpectedly viral after tweeting Lizzo to change an ableist slur in the lyrics of Grrrls and succeeding, despite some backlash and trolling, and doing it all again with Beyonce’s song Renaissance.

Hannah talks about founding and running her own publication Missing Perspectives, a publication platform dedicated to addressing the marginalisation of women in news, media, and democracy. She also shares her experiences of growing up with cerebral palsy, including her schooling, surgeries, the toughness of high school and the trickiness of relationships and the joy of eventually finding her people. Hannah also shares some thoughts and advice for Pea parents with kids with cerebral palsy.

Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us Hannah!

  • BeansTalk 14: Steve Sasaki-Samuels

Steve Sasaki-Samuels joins Garry all the way from Osaka, Japan where he now lives with his wife and 2 sons. As a Bean, Steve has had quite a journey - into his own manhood. His favourite podcast (apart from this one!) is Man Enough because it explores masculinity and how it can be toxic. Steve is also the host of his podcast Life With Jaime and More in which he talks with other dads and finds a therapeutic opportunity to express his voice.

This is a raw and real conversation that had both of us feeling all the feels.

  • Travelling without limits!

Mandy and Kate speak to Julie, author of popular travel blog Have Wheelchair, Will Travel, co-founder of Travel Without Limits and pea mum to 27-year-old Braeden, who lives with cerebral palsy.

Julie is all about supporting accessible, inclusive holidays for people with disabilities and their families, and has developed a strong and knowledgeable readership and resource through her award-winning publications. Julie has a background as a travel consultant and began her travel writing career after winning a trip to Disneyland and finding it manageable and accessible for her son, who uses a wheelchair. She was then inspired to start her blog Have Wheelchair, Will Travel, with the ultimate aim of empowering other pea families to travel. Julie also then started her magazine Travel Without Limits just before the pandemic struck in 2019. The magazine promotes inclusive, diverse, welcoming and fun travel experiences and covers a wide range of travel-related topics.
