Mandy and Kate talk to super Pea Jacqueline Fearnley, the mother of Kurt Fearnley AO, three-time Paralympic gold medalist and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist. Kurt also joins Jacqui in the podbar for this special chat with a magical Australian Pea family.
A trailblazer for Peas everywhere, Jacqui shares her story of bringing up her fifth baby Kurt, who was born with congenital disorder lumbar sacral agenisis. Following his birth and early hospitalisation, when it wasn’t clear whether he’d even survive, Jacqui and her husband were delighted to bring Kurt home to meet his older siblings and begin life in his small country hometown in New South Wales.
Jacqui talks about adjusting to life with a baby with special needs, including dealing with rectum comments, therapy appointments, equipment, early intervention and hospital visits. Jacqui defied the advice she was given at the time to keep Kurt clean and cared for inside, watching the world at the window, and ensured that he enjoyed the active and outdoorsy childhood he deserved to have - out in the paddocks with his brothers, chasing rabbits and riding horses, definitely not clean and getting up to mischief! Jacqui found the classic Australian book I Can Jump Puddles the perfect inspiration for enabling an inclusive and active childhood for Kurt.
Jacqui, Kurt, Mandy and Kate share a lot of laughs, stories and a couple of tears about Kurt’s adolescence and his growing involvement in sports, where he found confidence, community, incredible success and the opportunity to travel the world.
Thank you Jacqui and Kurt for sharing your remarkable story with us!

Be Kind. Be Brave. Be Present. These are the 3 B's that Rob Hale signs off with after each episode of his podcast - 'Dad-ability'. Rob shares his perspective on dadness, the joys and some of the lows, and how he has begun to engage with other dads of children-with-disabilities. And he explains the three B's. Great talk!

Kate and Mandy speak to Katie Wyatt, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Coles. In the spirit of ‘calling in’, rather than ‘calling out’, they shared Mandy’s daughter Molly’s feedback about doing work experience at her local Coles supermarket. Molly is 16 years old, attends a specialist school and has cerebral palsy and an intellectual disability.
Katie has a background in HR and lived experience of chronic illness, and became Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Coles shortly before COVID-19 hit. Katie works with Coles’ leadership and 120,000+ team members around Australia to build a diverse workplace in which everyone experiences a sense of connection and belonging.
Mandy shared the highs and lows of Molly’s feedback with Katie (the great food in the staffroom, helping customers find things, yet feeling like a burden) and some areas for learning, mentoring and support for Coles’ staff to ensure that they’re offering the best work experience program possible for young people with disabilities and additional needs. Katie shared that learning from lived experience and feedback is critical to Coles’ aim to create a workplace where everyone can belong and achieve their career goals.
Happily, at the end of her two weeks of work, Molly said she loved it so much that she didn’t want to leave! Our big thanks to Katie for her time and care in listening to and learning from Molly, Mandy and Kate's feedback. We hope other employers, large and small, can also learn from the valuable experience that Molly and all our Peashoots have to offer.

Kate and Mandy talk to writer, editor, podcaster and Head of Content for Mamamia Holly Wainwright – host of Mamamia Out Loud and Low Brow.
Holly is mum to her neurodiverse 10 year old Peashoot named Billy. Holly talks about the challenges of living a busy family life in Sydney while still learning about Billy’s needs, and the relief and change that came along when he received a diagnosis.
Holly and her family have now moved from Sydney to the country, which has been a positive and peaceful move for everyone, despite the challenges of having more limited access to services (including UberEats!)
Kate, Mandy and Holly also discuss Billy’s typical Peashoot issues with eating, friendships, parties and school. Holly is the author of I Give My Marriage A Year, How To Be Perfect and The Mummy Blogger – all great reads to explore.
