Victoria Arlen is a sportscaster and gold medallist who spent four years, aged 11-15, in a vegetative state. She was locked-in; aware of everything that was happening around her but unable to communicate, even blink, to let her family and doctors know she was still there.
She was written off with no expectation of recovery until one day, she blinked. That blink started Victoria’s incredible journey back to life. On that journey she learned to walk again, swam competitively and won gold at the 2012 Paralympics in London, competed on Dancing with the Stars in the US and is now a sportscaster for ESPN.
In this conversation, Victoria shares her experiences with me, the trauma of being locked-in, the resilience to get back to full strength and what it’s like to be defined by the worst thing that’s happened to you.
