  • #103 What is pelvic health, its importance and how it can improve your life with @bethdaviescoaching

Have you heard of the pelvic floor?

It has become a bit of a buzzword in recent years especially when it comes to post-natal talk.

But do you actually know anything about it?

Today I talk to Beth Davies who is a personal trainer who specialised in pelvic health.

We talk about how she came to work in this area of training

How it can affect women of all ages

How symptoms from this are not just caused by pregnancy and childbirth

That you don't actually have to live with things like leaking just because you had a child

That strength training is more about building muscle and it can improve many areas of your life

That if you're not 100% healed by your 6-week check that doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you

This is a topic I find has really flown under the radar for so long in the fitness industry and it is something that can have a big impact on your life

With the right training and exercise plan, you can really make a difference to your life and get on top of symptoms that you may have previously thought that you just have to live with

  • #101 Things that you are mistaking for fat gain

Over the years so much emphasis has been put on the scales as the one way to measure fat loss/fat gain

I know I have spoken about this before and I am aware of many different content creators who have done so too but it is still something that I hear about regularly

And after years of it being shoved down our throats, I don't blame people

So today I decided to talk about things that you are mistaking for fat gain

I talk about water retention and how that can cause it Exercise (not the way you think) Time of month (for the ladies)

And the importance of keeping your conditions when you weigh yourself consistent

If you get an emotional response from stepping on the scale, you may need to take a break from it for a while

Remember it is a data point which has no correlation to your self worth so if you feel it affects this you are better off not using it

  • #100 Things we learned over the years as a coach with @cian0brien

So here we are at ep no. 100! Nearly 2 years since why not? Started, the time has flown!

Today I had Cian O' Brien back on the podcast (ep #25,#86,#88) and we talked all about things we have learned over the years as a coach.

We talk about how people gravitate to those who "look the part" but what worked for this person may not work for you

It's ok to be wrong about your programming and you can change it if it doesn't work for your client

You don't need to be in pain after training and dripping in sweat for it to be a productive session

How you don't need to go hard every day, and unless you are an athlete sometimes just getting through the session is enough

That working single reps can make huge differences to your progress in terms of technique and load

BMI is just one way to measure yourself by

How we have created a world in which people are afraid to move

The course providers need to reevaluate how they are preparing coaches and PTs for actually working with people

That extremes can work for people but we still need to stay in our lane when it comes to extremes

That little tweaks to your diet can make massive changes

    All our decisions have consequences

The main takeaway is that life isn't black or white and there is a lot that exists in the grey and just because something didn't work for you don't be afraid to try something different as what works for someone may not work for you and vice versa

  • #99 Disordered eating, Fitness industry pitfalls and gaining weight isn't always a bad thing with @emiliathompsonphd

Have you heard the term disordered eating?

Today I talk to Emilia Thompson who is a nutrition coach who specializes in this area of nutrition

We talk about her own journey in body building and how it affected her relationship with food which was how she came to work in this area

We talk about the different ways that disordered eating can present themselves in people

How the fitness industry and most 6 or 8 week transformations are marketing and not health focused

How you cant expect to change habits and beliefs that you have had for years in a short timeframe

That you can want to gain weight for aesthetic reasons and if you don't think thats true you need to ask yourself why you feel that way

That we don't exist in our bodies just to be commented on

Different things in the media that she finds toxic in the industry

That being healthy isn't just about eating chicken and brocoli and that you can still have date nights or pizza as part of a healthy lifestyle

How journalling can be a helpful start to identify potentional disordered eating practices and what is causing them

If disorded eating is something that you struggle with I hight suggest contacting Emilia as she is not only knowledgable on the topic but she also deals with in it in a very holistic way

  • #98 Excuses that are stopping you starting in the first place

You've probably heard other trainers talking about "excuses" and how "everyone has the same 24hrs in the day".

This is not what this episode is about but sometimes we make the task so great we never even start

Time is something that I hear regularly from people as the reason they cannot exercise or eat "well"

So today I wanted to talk about things we can do to fit it into our busy schedules   I talk about how we don't need to be doing marathon gym sessions and a few short sessions a week is better than none at all

How planning is important when you are time-poor

How meal prepping can just be making a bigger dinner so you have something for the next day

That its the little changes that make the big differences over time

And that breaking down your goal can make it look less daunting

Remember you do not need to overhaul your life all at once, because often when we try to do this we end up back at square one

  • #97 Fatloss scams you need to avoid and the red flags you see with them

Scams are everywhere in every industry and the fitness industry is no different you will see everything from fatloss pills to machines that will "give you results with none of the work"

But the thing is.. if they actually did what they said why is there still an obesity problem?

Today I talk about some of these scams and how they are just out there to take advantage of you and take your money.

I cover several types of product that you find on the market and talk about why they won't work.

How if they were so great why are they on social media ads and the creators haven't won multiple awards.

How I also fell for these when I was young. And red flags to look for when you see these ads.

This is something that really does irritate me as it's just people who are trying to take advantage of others for a quick buck.

I'd love to hear your experiences and if you've ever tried and of these so let me know over on social media if you have!

And remember nothing will ever beat consistency!

  • #96 S&C in Football and Training Teen athletes with Charlie Norton Sherwood @charlie_n_s
You've probably heard the term Strength and conditioning, It is a big part of many sports, but is there a difference when it comes to training under 18's to adults?
Today I talk to Charlie Norton Sherwood about this very thing
Charlie is a S&C coach with the Arsenal under 14's team
We talk about how he got into S&C and how that lead him to his job over in London
About the different things you need to look out for with the age group he works with
How there is a lot more to football then just kicking a ball around
His own training and how having a coach himself makes it more enjoyable for him
And how its very easy for people to comment on how players are playing when they've never done it themselves
This was a really interesting chat and it really shows the amount of work that goes into coaching sports at a proffessional level even from when they are in the acadamies

  • #95 Is BMI the be all and end all when it comes to your health?

BMI has been around for a long time

For those of you who don't know what it is it stands for "Body Mass Index".  it is taken by measuring your weight against your height and these results detimine whether you are considered at a "healthy" weight for your height.

It does however have some problems as humans are not always so black and white

Today I talk about these differences

I talk about how weight doesn't account for muscle mass

How by the BMI scale an athlete can be considered in the obsese catagory

That weight isn't always going to be the cause of health issues

How you should not let that deter you from continuing your fitness journey

Other ways to track your progress and how you may be surprised by the difference you see using these methods

How certain companies also use BMI as a way to sell you into a plan

How you can't tell someones weight by looking at them

The main take away I want people to get from this is that you are more than a number on the scale and once your quality of life is not suffering because of that number you do not let that number control your life/how you feel

  • #94 What is body dismorphia?

Today I do a short episode all about body dismorphia

I want to say that I am not an expeert in this field so the stories I told are completely anecdotal

I start by giving the definition of body dismorphia from the Mayo clinic

Then I talk about my own experiences with it from being younger and even recently

Two stories involving men that really show that it is not just female problem

How you speak to yourself can really reinforce these feeling and intensify the issue

That you need to be aware of this not just when it comes to you but also when it comes to your family especially younger members as it can really affect them

And how steriod use in the fitness industry has affected how people think they look and it needs to be highlighted more when people are taking them

I also briefly mention the stuff you see for sale on fb and how they are just scams used to take your money so be careful of those too!
