  • #142 Paralysed at 18 but representing Ireland on the world stageand the mindset needed with @emmagoldingmindset

Today I speak to Emma Golding who is an international para carriage driver and mindset coach

Emma speaks about how she got into carriage driving after and riding accident which left her paralysed

We speak about carriage driving and how it works on a competitive stage

The teamwork and trust needed between driver and groom when competing

How It was never a question of coming back to horses after her accident and it was only down the line that she started to be affected by it

That the thoughts and worries she was suffering from led her to seek out ways to deal with it as it was starting to affect her enjoyment of the sport

This led her to want to help others who were suffering from the same problems and trained herself as a mindset coach

We then discuss the similar issues she sees come up with Equestrians

How that just because you are at the top of your sport doesn't mean you don't suffer from these things too

We also talk about how receptive our horses are when we tense up so controlling our own nervous system is so important

And how it feels to represent your country at the top level and knowing that you are an inspiration to others around you

  • #140 Strength training is about more than weightloss
So it's the time of year when we are going to see all those LBD or Xmas party-ready workouts advertised everywhere...
That's why I decided that it was a good time to remind everyone the reasons why strength training is important for women that don't include weightloss
I talk about how it helps improve bone density
    More muscle = more food
How having more muscle can also protect joints from impact and injury
That it just makes day to day life easier
How staying active makes you more independent in later life
And one of the most important ones.. it's great for your mental health!
I also say that when it comes to exercise it's important to find something that you enjoy and that all gyms aren't the same so if you need any help with finding something that suits you feel free to drop me a DM

  • #139 Make the plan, stick to the plan, throw away the plan and improvise with @evilcharmander

When you watch a series or a documentary do you ever wonder about what goes on behind the camera? Today I talk to James Maher, a media producer who has created content for a whole range of different types of projects.

We talk about how he got into media initially by taking photos for a shop he worked for and that grew to being lead producer on The Grassroots Rider Academy this year.

How James didn't get a formal education in video and media production but has still worked with the likes of RTÉ

How people initially don't tend to take him seriously just by how he looks

That no project is the same and each one is like a new adventure which James really enjoys

We also talk about interviewing and finding ways to get people to tell their story

We discuss The Grassroots Rider Academy the preparations and the importance of having a good team behind you

James also talks about how if you want to do something just do it, the only way to learn is by getting out there and making mistakes and he wouldn't change anything good times or bad

The importance of word of mouth and also being okay with turning down projects because the work will be there

That if you want to do something the time to do it is not when you get home from work

James has a great piece of advice at the end of the podcast which everyone needs to hear

  • #138 Mindset coaching Natural horsmanship and acknowledging body sensations with @helenohanloncoaching

Do you sometimes feel a little lost.. like you don't know what to do? Or lacking in confidence? Have you ever given coaching or maybe are thinking about giving coaching a try?

Today I talk to Helen O'Hanlon who is a woman of many talents. She is a secondary school teacher but also a mindset coach and natural horsemanship instructor

We talk about how after a bad accident she found natural horsemanship which helped her come back and build trust around horses again

How her passion for psychology is also shared by her mother and they are able to discuss and bounce ideas off each other

That coming from a non-horsey background wasn't the disadvantage that she originally thought and you can find your own nice in horses so you don't have to do what everyone else is doing

We also speak about the common themes that she sees with people coming for mindset coaching and some of the techniques she uses with clients both human and horse

That you do not have to be competing to do well with horses and we need to remind ourselves that sometimes

That we are stronger together and we need to bring everyone in the equine industry together

She also speaks about playing "fact or fiction" because with facts you can use them to improve but if you focus on fiction you will disempower yourself

She also goes for coaching herself which shows it is something that can be really powerful and she's not just saying it because it is what she does as a business

  • #137 Telling your story, talk therapy, and being un apologetically you with @katiesheehan87

TW talks of rape, suicide, miscarriage

Do you keep your feelings down? Or maybe you've suffered from challenges in life that affect you daily and you don't know what to do about it? Today I talk to Katie Sheehan, a Spin south-west DJ who shares her story

She speaks about how through community radio she released a docu-series speaking about what could be considered "hard topics" and how it was received both positively and negatively

How speaking out about these types of topics also helped her with her own journey of healing as she was helping others not to feel so alone when they were going through similar things

Katie has also suffered from several gynaecological conditions over the years which caused her to struggle quite a bit when it came to getting pregnant and culminated in her developing PMDD after the birth of her son

She had to make the very tough decision to have a full hysterectomy at 32 which catapulted her into menopause but saved her from the dark place her mind was taking her with PMDD and she cannot recommend enough to those who feel like she did to go get it checked by someone who specialises in PMDD

Katie has gone through so much but she has learned from it all and she has made it her mission to help other people in similar situations by sharing her story you can tell from her voice it matters to her more than any social media plaudits or negativity that might come from it

This was such an inspiring chat from someone who has chosen to live their best life and anyone who listens to this can take so much value from it

  • #136 Equine product reviews, miniature pony showing and minding yourself on social media with @equinecentsandsensibility

Is product reviewing something that you've thought of doing on social media? Maybe you've considered turning your online presence into a job. Well today I speak to Oonagh O'Brien (@equinecentsandsensilbilty) about what it's like being a product reviewer

We talk about how she accidentally became a product reviewer, and how the reviewer landscape has changed since she started it in 2017.

How trolls and social media have changed the sport and not for the better

How putting yourself out there not only puts you in the firing line for abuse but also full-on copying you or stealing your content for themselves

That once you represent brands you need to pay attention to what you post cos you are not just representing yourself anymore

The importance of having influencers of all shapes and sizes because people come in all shapes and sizes

We also talked a bit about the dangers of children becoming influencers at such a young age and the mortification we feel trying to take videos in public

At the end, we had a little chat about showing miniature ponies, which is another thing that Oonagh does (If you've not seen the videos of Pixie and Peanut check them out!)

They were both rescues but now are both seasoned show ponies, but the shows have been gradually disappearing over the last few years which is such a pity

Oonagh also speaks about the care of minatures is completely different to normal-size horses and you have to be mindful of this if you are new to owning them.

  • #135 You are a never ending story

It can be easy to feel like you are going nowhere but do you ever look back on how far you've come?

In the last episode before the summer I'm going to talk all about this

This was inspired by a recent weekend I spent at a competition doing media work which made me think back to when I graduated college and thought media wasn't for me because I hated putting myself in front of people

It's taken 10 years of growth to bring myself to this point and that's why it's important to look back

It's not a linear process and there are knockbacks

Being aware of negative self-talk and catching yourself in it

Learning how to hack the system instead of using excuses to avoid pushing yourself

But also be aware that if you're not enjoying something it's ok to take a break or stop completely

But most importantly remember that you will always be a work in progress and that's ok, the worst thing you can do is stay the same

I will be back with new episodes in September but don't worry I will be sharing previous episodes "from the vault" all through the summer so there will be some great eps to listen to!

  • #134 Finding the joy with Maija Tweeddale

If you want to reach a health goal all you need to do is follow the steps right? If it were that easy everyone would have no issues

Today I speak to Maija Tweeddale who is a Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach about the importance of tackling the underlying causes to effect long-term change

We talk about the difference between nutritional therapists and Health Coaches

That our habits didn't just happen yesterday so it can take time to break them

It's not linear but one "bad" day won't have you back at square one

There is no silver bullet or a magic pill and many things affect our body including your environment and negative thoughts

The importance of finding the joy and that we've lost touch with how we feel in our body

That the fact so much of our relaxation is spent doing something stimulating makes the regulation of highs and lows much harder

The problems comparing yourself cause, like do you actually want what you are comparing yourself to others

Maija also talked about her own career move from a career that would be considered something we all aim for but was actaully slowly dragging her down

We also chat about some of the extreme diets that we did and how the real key is balance

That so many issues can be solved with diet and exercise instead of medication

The importance of checking in with how you are doing cos we easily forget how far we've come

A reminder that we are all human and bad days are ok move on and remember that that is normal

Maija also has a really simple but amazing piece of advice at the end that I think we all need reminding from time to time

  • #133 Too old to train?

Have you considered starting some form of resistence training but think you are just too old? Well I'm here to explain to you how that is not the case

As we age we are more prone to things like sarcopenia (degeneration of muscle) and osteoperosis/osteapenia (brittle bones) and you can help manage these condtions with resistance training

Building some muscle can help support arthritus, joint replacements and other pain (excluding nerve damage)

Pain killers are not the answer in most situations

Massage and stretching are just as temporary as painkillers

if you don't use it you lose it

The importance of being able to get up without using your hands

Our clients experience and how resistence training has changed so much for her quality of life

You don't need to be a body builder to make a change

You don't even need a gym to do it

Having structure to a how you train can help you stick to it so if you have joined multiple gyms over the years but never stuck to it, try working with a coach or joining a class
