On the weekend, residents in Israel’s border towns were confronted by Hamas militants who rampaged through towns as they fired thousands of rockets into Israeli territory.

What has occurred in the hours and days after the start of this latest escalation has been brutal, shocking and sad, with many innocent women and children caught up in the conflict.

But while the war has begun again in earnest in this part of the world, and governments around the globe line up behind their chosen ally, the complexities of this struggle are again in the spotlight and leave many wondering if this was the only and inevitable outcome.
