For decades, I told myself I was creative. But not really creative. I could do lettering and calligraphy. But I couldn't draw or paint. So being creative became something I did on the side of my life instead of something I let myself really own.
In this episode, I'm tracing that belief all the way back through a bathroom valance I made just because I wanted to, a plain Ikea table turned into a chessboard, and years of doodling whales I love so much I bought a domain for it. Then something happened. It felt like the summer that cracked creativity open. It centered around a cancelled Grand Canyon rafting trip, a friend's art studio, and a decision to create something rather than have a summer with only sadness.
This isn't a story about becoming an artist. It's a story about giving yourself permission and about one of the most common regrets I hear from midlife women: not letting yourself be happy. Please enjoy!

My guest, Katie Beecher, MS, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Medical and Emotional Intuitive with over thirty-five years of experience. She blends clinical training with intuitive readings to help clients get to the root of what's really going on in their lives, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Katie is featured in over 200 media outlets including Goop, Kourtney Kardashian's website Poosh and Miranda Kerr's Kora Organics Blog and has taught a weeklong workshop at the Omega Institute. She has a unique way of working with clients, creating a detailed, individualized, physical, emotional, and spiritual report and symbolic painting, before ever seeing them, talking with them or seeing a photograph, using only their name and age.
For every client, she creates a detailed written report along with a symbolic watercolor "soul painting," then walks through themtogether during a session.
Katie's book, Heal from Within: An Intuitive Guide to Wellness is published by St. Martin's Press, uses the same practical tools and techniques Katie uses in her own medical and spiritual intuitive readings. In addition, the book teaches you to be your own medical intuitive using Katie's revolutionary, step-by-step process for connecting to intuition and spirit, finding self-love and empowerment as well as how to heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Nine years ago, Suzy hit record on the very first episode of Women in the Middle. She began the show sitting in a cold cedar closet surrounded by clothes from the 90s and had no idea what she was actually starting.
You'll hear a real, behind the scenes look back that includes what it takes to create over 468 episodes. You'll also hear about what nine years of showing up every single week actually took, what it taught her, and what she's still learning right now about how to keep doing it well.

If you or someone you love has ever faced a cancer diagnosis, you know how overwhelming it can feel to try to understand your options, organize your care, and advocate for yourself while everything in your life is upended.
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Tiffany Troso-Sandoval, an oncologist with over 25 years of experience treating women with breast and gynecological cancers, including time at Memorial Sloan Kettering. She is the author of her new book, Calming the Cancer Chaos: An Oncologist's Guide for Women to Understand, Organize, and Take Control of Their Cancer Care.

Someone booked a Next Chapter Direction Session recently, and told me, like so many women do, that she just needed clarity to finally feel better. I sent her a voice note before we even talked, because I wanted her to hear something first:
What if you're right on track? And what if this, before the clarity, before the answer, could be a joyful part of your journey?
That question is the heart of this episode. I'm using a plant in my own backyard garden to make the case for something most of us have never been taught: that you don't have to wait for the outcome to feel good about the process.

It's my birthday month and I'm turning 63. And instead of dreading it, I'm genuinely grateful for it.
In this episode, I'm sharing three gifts of getting older that don't get talked about enough. I don't mean the greeting card version; I'm talking about the real ones. The kind you can only notice when you've actually lived long enough to see them.
If you're a woman in your 50s or 60s who's starting to feel time differently, this one's for you.

Today's episode is about midlife shifts and ultimately saying goodbye an animal rescue in midlife.
My guest is Amy Castro.
Amy is a professional speaker, communication expert, and proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Gulf War. For more than 25 years, she's helped people communicate with confidence, set healthy boundaries, and speak up without backing down. But her most powerful reinventions didn't happen on stage. They happened in the middle of real life.

You don't need a reason to want what you want.
You don't need to earn it, justify it, or prove that it solves a problem or serves someone else. You are allowed to want something just because it makes you happy, just because it brings you joy, just because it's yours.
That sounds simple. But after more than a decade of coaching midlife women, Suzy knows it's one of the hardest things to actually practice.
In this episode, Suzy revisits the Permission to Want theme from Episode 436 but takes it somewhere new. Instead of focusing on the big, sweeping case for permission, this show is about what permission actually looks like in the small, everyday moments.

Most of us know what a fork in the road feels like. You've got a heavy decision to make. There are at least two possible paths. And when you're at the fork, you know it's time to choose which way to go and that you will have to live with your choice.
What can be so surprising is how often fear has been driving the decision-making over the years. Not us. Fear. Dressed up as reason, responsibility, and common sense.
In this episode, Suzy revisits the Forks in the Road concept from Episode 335 but takes it somewhere much deeper. She shares a personal realization she had recently about her own 1982 fork in the road, when she was accepted into a university program in the Caribbean and turned it down. She'd told that story before. But this time, she finally connected it to experiences from earlier in her life that explained, clearly and with compassion, why that fear made complete sense at the time…and as an older and wiser woman over 40 years later, why it may no longer apply to the woman she is now.

Did you know you can use envy for good? Envy is one of those emotions most of us were taught to push down, feel ashamed of, and definitely not admit to out loud. But what if envy is actually one of the most useful tools you have access to right now, especially in your 50s and 60s, especially when you're trying to figure out what you actually want?
In this episode, I'm making the case for "Envy for Good™" and I'm doing it with more conviction than ever, because I experienced it myself this week.
