正文：1.Growing up near Silicon Valley, Manasi Mishra remembers seeing tech executives on social media urging students to study computer programming.

2.“The rhetoric was, if you just learned to code, work hard and get a computer science degree, you can get six figures for your starting salary,” Ms. Mishra, now 21, recalls hearing as she grew up in San Ramon, Calif.

3.Those golden industry promises helped spur Ms. Mishra to code her first website in elementary school, take advanced computing in high school and major in computer science in college. But after a year of hunting for tech jobs and internships, Ms. Mishra graduated from Purdue University in May without an offer.

正文：When a group of private equity investors and Chinese technology companies were asked for ideas on how they would revive Starbucks Corp.’s fortunes in the world’s second-largest economy, the most common advice was: Be a lot more like the local competition that beat you. Starbucks, they argued, should have smaller stores, employ fewer people and cut prices, according to people familiar with the sale process that kicked off in May. These proposals resemble the very model that enabled Luckin Coffee Inc. to overtake Starbucks as China’s biggest coffee chain two years ago by selling coffee at one third of its price.

正文：The success of the Golden Arches rests on three simple, sturdy foundations: a menu of reliably decent grub, at a decent price, shored up by catchy marketing. Ever since it went public in 1965, McDonald’s has done best whenever it stuck to this original blueprint. When one or more of these pillars crumbles, the fast-food fortress looks shaky. A quarter of a century ago this led to a near-collapse. Overly rapid expansion in the number of outlets and, at the same time, of products on offer made it harder for burger-flippers to keep up, hurting reliability. A price war with Burger King turned downright indecent. And the ads were stale, too. The result was acid reflux for investors. Between late 1999 and early 2003 the company shed two-thirds of its market value.

正文：1.Yesterday evening, Sam Altman shared an image of the Death Star on X. There was no caption on the picture, which showed the world-destroying Star Wars space station rising over an Earth-like planet, but his audience understood the context. In fewer than 24 hours, OpenAI would release an AI model intended to wipe out all the rest.

2.That model, GPT-5, launched earlier today with all the requisite fanfare. In an
announcement video, Altman said that the product will serve as a “legitimate Ph.D.-level expert in anything—any area you need, on demand—that can help you with whatever your goals are.” He added that “anyone, pretty soon, will be able to do more than anyone in history could.” In more concrete terms, GPT-5 is an upgrade to the ChatGPT interface you’re likely already familiar with: a model that’s now a bit better at writing, coding, math and science problems, and the like.

正文：Until recently, Indians had few safe ways of joining the global craze for weight-loss drugs. Some smuggled them into the country when returning home from abroad; others chanced it with bootlegged versions from Dubai. But in March Mounjaro, a weight-loss drug from Eli Lilly, an American pharmaceutical giant, became legally available in India. In June Wegovy, a drug from Novo Nordisk, a Danish firm, followed.
