正文：On a regular Tuesday morning, a large crowd has gathered outside a grocery store in Xuchang, a city of 4m people. Visit Pangdonglai at the weekend and things are even busier. The chipmaker that dominates the market for artificial intelligence hardware is in the crosshairs of Chinese antitrust regulators, other chipmakers, and maybe even its own customers. These mounting challenges are a nuisance, but also a compliment.

正文：UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor day began much like any other corporate event. There was breakfast and then around 8 a.m. Wednesday the collection of investors, executives and Wall Street analysts filed into a capacious third-floor ballroom at the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan to hear upbeat presentations about the company’s future. Unbeknown to them, one of the company’s top executives had been killed earlier that morning on the street below in what police say was a targeted attack.

A lightning advance by Syrian rebel groups took just over a week to roll through the country’s major cities and into the capital Sunday, driving Assad to flee and bringing an end to a regime that had ruled for 54 years. Assad traveled to Russia early Sunday, where Moscow granted him and his family political asylum.

正文：The image is black-and-white, lending it an air of “historical artifact”: A modern-day Donald Trump standing next to Elvis Presley. The president-elect posted the picture on Truth Social last night. Presley is strumming a guitar; Trump is idling in the frame. Of course, this scene is impossible, and it’s not a real photograph. Elvis died in 1977, when Trump was 31 years old. Nevertheless, here’s Trump, side by side with the King, not smiling, not singing, just … hanging out. There is no punch line, or even a semblance of a joke. It is literally just something to look at.

The president’s reversal is understandable, humane and wrong

正文：When setting up the checks and balances in the American constitution, the document’s authors knew they wanted the judiciary to be independent of the legislative and the executive branches. But who, then, would check the judges? One answer was that the president would be able to pardon criminals. This awesome power—to override a decision taken by the courts—should be used rarely, because it is at odds with democracy and judicial independence. If it seems a bit medieval to let one man dispense (and dispense with) justice in this way, that is because it is. In British law the “prerogative of mercy” can be traced back to the reign of King Ine of Wessex in the seventh century.
