114: Simplifying Plant-Based Meals: Brigitte Gemme's Journey to Veganism and the Vegan Family Kitchen

Listen Later

Raised on a farm and immersed in a meat-centric world, Brigitte Gemme never questioned the practice of eating animals until her mid-thirties. Today, she is the founder of Vegan Family Kitchen and author of Flow in the Kitchen, where she teaches the art of simple, nourishing vegan meals. Her transformation—motivated by environmental concern, health awareness, and a growing connection to animal compassion—has become an inspiration for many on a similar journey.

A Wake-Up Call: The Environmental Impact of Meat

Brigitte's shift to veganism began with an unexpected jolt. A fellow bike commuter once told her, "If you ride your bike to work but fuel your commute with steak, you might as well be driving a Hummer." That comment hit home. Brigitte, who considered herself environmentally conscious, was suddenly forced to confront the contradiction in her lifestyle. She began extensive research on the environmental impact of animal-based foods and realized the toll her diet was taking on the planet. Determined to align her actions with her values, she decided to transition her diet, starting with plant-based cooking at home.

Embracing the Challenge: Transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet

Initially, Brigitte wasn't ready to fully commit to a vegan diet in public, preferring to make plant-based meals at home. Over two years, she developed new cooking skills and explored vegan recipes, discovering a wealth of delicious plant-based options. As her second child arrived, Brigitte had a profound realization: her experience with breastfeeding sparked empathy for dairy cows. She couldn't ignore the ethical implications of animal farming and ultimately embraced a fully vegan lifestyle, choosing compassion over tradition.

From Skepticism to Advocacy: Discovering the Health Benefits of Plant-Based Eating

At first, Brigitte was skeptical of claims about the health benefits of a plant-based diet, suspecting they might be exaggerated. But as she researched chronic disease prevention, particularly after her father's diagnosis of dementia, she recognized the profound impact of plant-based nutrition on long-term health. Now a certified plant-based nutrition expert, she understands the benefits of a diet rich in whole foods. Her family experienced steady health, energy, and vitality, reinforcing her commitment to veganism.
