I know how debilitating and overwhelming panic attacks can be. When I had my first panic attack, I was completely blindsided. I was convinced that I was about to pass out or that something catastrophic was about to happen. I had no idea what was going on, and I was absolutely terrified.
Like many people who experience panic attacks for the first time, I started frantically trying to figure out what was wrong. Was it a heart issue? A blood sugar problem? Some kind of medical emergency?
I was grasping at straws, and the more I tried to understand what was happening, the more anxious and panicked I became.
During a panic attack, your brain is suddenly flooded with adrenaline. The adrenaline surge kickstarts the fight or flight response. It's a natural survival mechanism, but it can also be the very thing that perpetuates the cycle of panic.
