Many people in this midlife age range grew up being told to be ‘nice’ to others. How often did you hear “Nice girls wouldn’t do that,” or being forced to apologize to a sibling or friend because the words you said weren’t “nice.”

Now as an adult, I hear these phrases and think about how ‘being nice’ means not showing your true self to others. It’s the same as hiding behind a mask because you’re not using your voice to say what you feel. When you stifle your thoughts like this, you’re giving your power away and allowing someone else to dictate how you act and what you say.
