80. Beating Burnout with A Simple Reset

Listen Later

Burnout is all too common, especially for us women physicians. Feeling utterly exhausted with everyday life is, well, exhausting! Let’s look at how we can beat burnout with a simple reset: Rest, laughter, and connection are the best medicine.

How to Beat the Burnout

  1. Figure Out What You Need
  2. Find Joy in the Everyday
  3. Find Connection Everyday
  4. Plan Your Next Reset

What Exactly IS Burnout?

In the demands of modern society, our ever-increasing workloads, and addiction to people-pleasing, we are, more than ever, prone to feeling burned out. Burnout is a state of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion that comes from - yep - a state of prolonged stress.

Getting over burnout isn’t an impossible task, but it does take some commitment to wellness. Reducing the likelihood of recurring burnout also takes some planning.

But it IS possible to beat burnout by taking and scheduling regular resets. What’s a reset? A reset is whatever you need to do in order to realign your life.

A Reset Looks Like...

A reset for me looks like a trip away with my family where I prioritize fun and connection. Laughter is such an essential ingredient to avoiding burnout: the more you laugh and have fun, the more restless energy you put to bed.

A reset can work extremely quickly, as well. It’s about breaking that monotonous routine and bringing yourself back to what really matters. This is why it’s so important for you to check in with yourself and ask those questions you might not like the answer to.

“How am I feeling right now, really? Am I handling everything life’s throwing my way? What am I craving right now?” These check-ins help you get deep into your actual needs as they are right now. Don’t forget - for a reset to be really effective, you need to have one regularly!

What would make you refreshed right now? Do you need a reset? Let me know what this looks like for you in the comments on the episode page.

Quotes

“For me, because I am so typically scheduled, a reset is about not being scheduled. When you’re thinking about resetting and how you can go ahead and do that, think about what do you always do and what do you want to try more of.” [5:13]

“We all need to laugh more. We need to put our fun hat on. We wear all these hats, right? Doctor, wife, partner, friend, mom, dog-mom, cat-mom, whatever. We wear all these hats, but when do we wear the fun hat? It’s nice to wear the fun hat more. The fun hat is fun and it makes you laugh. Laughing helps get rid of the restless energy we sometimes carry around with us.” [18:47]

“Some of the things I want you to think about are: where are you with things? Do you need a reset? Why do you need a reset? What are you craving? What are you going to do on this reset? What can you take from it? Go ahead and put it out into the world. Keep living the life that you desire.” [28:45]
