In the last episode, we talked about why English vocabulary feels so hard — especially for Chinese speakers.
We talked about mismatch.
We talked about why forgetting is not a personal flaw, but a predictable outcome of the wrong learning model.
So today, I want to move us forward.
Because once you understand why something doesn’t work, the next question is obvious.
So… What actually does work?
In this episode, I want to show you how English vocabulary is meant to be learned.
Not through painful memorization, but through context, patterns, emotion, and something called spiral learning.
This is the episode where things finally start to make sense. Let’s get it rolling!

Let me start today’s episode with a very honest question.
Why does English vocabulary feel so hard to memorize — especially for Chinese speakers?
Why do we keep learning the same words, seeing them again and again, and still forgetting them?
Most people explain this problem in very simple ways.
They say:
“I don’t have a good memory.”, “I’m not disciplined enough.”, or “I didn’t review hard enough.”
But in today’s episode, I want to challenge that idea.
Because the real problem is not memory.
The real problem is mismatch.
A mismatch between how Chinese trains your brain, and how English actually works as a language.
In this episode, I don’t want to teach you how to memorize words just yet.
I want to explain why forgetting English vocabulary is actually predictable, and why, for Chinese speakers, it’s almost inevitable if we use the wrong learning model.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated, guilty, or confused about vocabulary, this episode is for you.
OK! Let’s get into it.

Let's get it rolling!
 本期的知识卡片我们整理在下面啦:
1. Key Vocabulary (核心词汇)
2. Native Expressions (地道表达)
"Let’s get it rolling!"Meaning: 让我们开始吧!(播客或活动开场常用,比 "Let's start" 更具动感)。
"Happened first, and was named later."Meaning: 先发生,后命名。形容冬奥会初期并非刻意规划,而是自然演变后的产物。
"Medals are never just medals."Meaning: 奖牌从来不只是奖牌。暗示奖牌背后承载的国家实力、科研和体制支撑。
"Social media-friendly / Short-form video ready"Meaning: 适合社交媒体/短视频传播。形容像 Big Air(大跳台)这种视觉冲击力强、节奏快的项目。
3. Cultural & Historical Context (文化背景)
Chamonix 1924:The birthplace of the Winter Games. Originally called "International Winter Sports Week." It reflects the transition of winter sports from survival skills (生存技能) to lifestyle symbols (生活方式的象征).
The "Miracle on Ice" (1980):A legendary moment in sports history where a team of American college students defeated the professional Soviet team. It’s the ultimate symbol of the Cold War rivalry (冷战对峙) played out on ice.
Subculture vs. Mainstream:Snowboarding is the best example. It started as a "rebellious" (反叛的) street culture and was even banned from resorts before becoming one of the most popular Olympic events.

新年假期过了,Happy Belated Chinese New Year, everyone.
在新年之前,因为都在介绍中国新年,有一个很有趣而且大家都在庆祝的节日背后的故事我却忘记介绍了,那就是——
Valentine's Day,情人节。
2. Key Phrases (地道短语)
Love shifted from duty to desire.爱从一种“责任”转变为了一种“欲望”。
A season of longing.一个渴望/思念的季节。
Standard equipment (標配).文案中对应表达:A staple of Valentine’s Day 或 Standard practice.
Bitter-sweet (苦中带甜).形容黑色情人节那种自嘲但又期待爱情的心境。
A world where love was regulated.一个爱被管制的世界。
3. Cultural Nuggets (文化要点)
The Origin (起源): It traces back to St. Valentine, a priest in the 3rd century Roman Empire who secretly performed marriages for soldiers, defying the Emperor's ban.(起源于3世纪,瓦伦丁神父违反禁令,秘密为士兵证婚。)
The Shift (转折): The medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer helped link the day to romance and "bird-pairing."(中世纪诗人乔叟将此日与浪漫和鸟类配对联系在一起。)
Modern Commercialization (现代商业化): Companies like Hallmark turned emotions into products. Romance became something you could buy, wrap, and present.(像Hallmark这样的公司将情感商品化,浪漫变成了可以购买、包装和赠送的东西。)
4. Reflective Sentences (深度思考/写作句型)
Use these to practice your English speaking or writing:
"Valentine’s Day slowly shifted from choosing love to proving it."(情人节慢慢从“选择爱”变成了“证明爱”。)
"In a consumer culture, proof is often measured in spending."(在消费主义文化中,证明通常是用消费来衡量的。)
"Love has always existed somewhere between sacrifice and celebration."(爱一直存在于牺牲与庆典之间的某个地方。)

Before we step into the Lunar New Year, this is our last episode for the Year of the Snake.
And instead of talking about goals, or resolutions, or what we should become next year—I want to do something different.
Today, I want to tell you a story.
A story that people have told for generations, on the very last night before the new year begins.
A story that was meant to prepare us for the noise, for the color red, for the firecrackers, and for the light.
So wherever you are right now — maybe you’re cleaning the house, maybe you’re on your way home, maybe you’re lying in bed — take a deep breath.
This story is not just to entertain you.
It’s here to help us cross the threshold from one year into the next.
This is the story of the night when a village stopped running.
This… is the story of Nian.

Today we’re talking about a skill that sounds small… but honestly can shape your social life, your career, and even how quickly you feel at home in a new country.
We’re talking about small talk.
I used to think small talk was pointless. Like… why are we talking about the weather? We both have eyes. We can see it’s sunny.
But after living in the U.S., and now in Australia, I’ve realized something important.
Small talk isn’t about information.
Small talk is about connection.
It’s the way humans gently signal to each other:
“I’m friendly. I’m safe. I’m open to interacting.”
And once you see it that way, small talk suddenly feels less fake… and more like a social superpower.
So today, let’s really unpack it — what it is, why Westerners are so good at it, why many of us from East Asian cultures feel awkward, why we’re all getting worse at it in the social media age, and how small talk can actually lead to deep relationships.

(Core Vocabulary)

NFL (National Football League): 美式橄榄球联盟。
Halftime Show: 中场秀(从体育赛事转化为全球流行文化事件的关键环节)。

Cultural Conversation: 文化讨论/社会话题(品牌购买昂贵的广告位,是为了引发全民讨论和转发)。

 卡片 3:社交与生活方式 (Social & Culture)

"Shh! This is the good part!" (嘘!精彩的部分来了!——指超级碗观众在广告时间也会专注观看。)
"We’re not just selling a product. We’re selling a belief." (我们卖的不只是产品,而是信念。)
"Invite friends over": 邀请朋友来家里。
"Reserve seats / Book a booth": 在酒吧预订座位或包厢。
 卡片 6:朗读与语感练习 (Recap Reading)
Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just about football. It’s one of the last national rituals in the United States—a day when tens of millions of people gather in living rooms, dorm rooms, and bars, sharing food, cheering together, and turning a game into a social celebration. With household ratings above forty percent in recent years, the Super Bowl remains a rare moment when America watches the same thing at the same time.
超级碗星期日不仅仅关乎橄榄球。它是美国最后的全国性仪式之一——在这一天,数以千万计的人们聚集在客厅、宿舍和酒吧里,分享美食,共同欢呼,将一场比赛转变为一场社交庆典。随着近年来家庭收视率超过40%,超级碗依然是全美在同一时间观看同一事物的罕见时刻。

So every single year — and I mean every year — around Chinese New Year, I get the same questions from my non-Chinese friends.
They’ll go like:
“Wait… Chinese New Year isn’t on January 1st?”
“Why is everything red?”
“And why does it feel like the entire country just… disappears for a week?”
So today, I want to share how I personally explain Chinese New Year to foreigners — in a normal conversation, over coffee, at work, or at my kids’ school.
No textbooks.
No complicated history lectures.
Just the version that actually works.
Ready? Let’s get it rolling!

前阵子我回了一趟上海。
主要是办「纵横四海」还有MBA的线下活动,虽然行程很忙,但是还是有抽空跟一些上海的好朋友一起catch up,其中最开心的就是跟我 MBA 时期最好的朋友 Nick 见个面。
我们聊了最近生活的感悟、工作上面和心境上面的变化等等,当然,也聊到了我在澳洲的生活,聊了两个多小时,快走之前,Nick 看着我说了一句话。
他说:
"David, I don't know how to explain it,
but after this past year in Australia,
you seem more… grounded."
我听到那句话,其实心里停了一下,给他会心的一笑。
Grounded 这个字,我当然知道意思,但我也突然意识到——
