Of all the documentaries we’ve reviewed, this has got to be the strangest. How does a team of supposedly high school-aged football players, who are supposedly students of a school that doesn’t really exist, end up on ESPN getting walloped by one of the country’s most elite prep academies?

How does a man with no experience starting a school or coaching football end up launching one of the most disturbing cons in the history of high school sports? This HBO documentary attempts to answer these questions. And while it’s not perfect, it’s an astonishing look at the forces that make high school football seem like a way out for underprivileged kids and their families and how a con artist used their dreams and vulnerabilities to recruit for a fake school -- Bishop Sycamore High.
