We can learn a lot by looking at the levels and the ratio of the main thyroid hormones tested these days, T3 and T4.
When both are low, the most common cause is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which occurs when the immune system damages the thyroid gland. However, if T3 is low and T4 is within the normal or optimal range, there are several factors we need to explore.
Today, I’m sharing the main causes of low T3 levels in the presence of normal T4 levels.
In this episode, you’ll learn about:
- Main thyroid hormones that are tested
- The most common causes of low T3 and T4
- What’s usually below low T3 alongside normal T4 levels
- Case study of my recent Graves’ patient who started with elevated levels
- Optimal thyroid hormone levels I aim for with my patients
- Factors that can cause a conversion of T4 to T3
- The role of the liver and gut in the conversion of T4 to T3
- Inflammation as a factor in thyroid disease
- What you need to know about nutrient deficiencies and thyroid hormones
As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!
