President Xi Jinping has highlighted the important role of the nation's large-scale grain growers, calling on them to boost their operations, make greater and more effective use of modern agricultural technology and contribute to ensuring China's food security.

国家主席习近平强调了我国种粮大户的重要作用，希望他们发挥规模经营优势，积极应用现代农业科技，为国家粮食安全贡献力量。

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remark on Monday in a letter of reply to Xu Congxiang, a veteran grain farmer in Taihe county, Anhui province.

6月27日，中共中央总书记习近平在给安徽省太和县种粮能手徐淙祥的回信中寄予殷切期望。

In his letter to Xu, a large-scale grain farmer who won several national honors after setting up an agricultural cooperative in 2010, the president expressed his hope that large-scale grain growers can leverage the advantages of scale operation, actively apply modern agricultural technologies and encourage small-scale farmers to contribute to the country's food security by expanding grain production and improving grain quality.

自2010年种粮能手徐淙祥创办农业种植专业合作社后，他多次获得国家级荣誉。习近平在给这位种粮大户的回信中表示，希望种粮大户发挥规模经营优势，积极应用现代农业科技，带动广大小农户多种粮、种好粮，一起为国家粮食安全贡献力量。

Xi, who met the veteran grain farmer on a fact-finding trip to the county in April 2011 while serving as China's vice-president, said he was delighted to know that Xu has reaped a bumper wheat harvest this year and his children and grandchildren are carrying on his work.

2011年4月，习近平到张槐村实地考察时会见了这位种粮能手。习近平在今年给他的回信中指出，“得知你家种植的小麦喜获丰收，儿孙也跟着你干起了农业，我感到很高兴。”

Noting that people feel assured when they have an ample supply of food, Xi said he always pays close attention to grain production.

习近平强调，手中有粮，心中不慌。对粮食生产，他一直都很关注。

The CPC Central Committee, with a host of policy measures to support grain production in recent years, aims to ensure China's self-sufficiency and to enable farmers to earn tangible benefits and make their lives better, he said.

他表示，党中央近年来出台了一系列支持粮食生产的政策举措，就是要让中国人的饭碗牢牢端在自己手中，就是要让种粮农民有钱挣、得实惠，日子越过越好。

Since leading the establishment of the agricultural cooperative in his county, Xu has been devoted to large-scale farming and the research of agricultural technology, and has won several national honors, including National Model Worker.

自徐淙祥牵头成立农业种植专业合作社以来，他一直致力于规模化养殖和农业技术研究，曾获得包括全国劳动模范在内的多项国家级荣誉。

He recently wrote to Xi to report his experience of growing grain and helping fellow villagers shake off poverty, and he expressed his resolve to lead more farmers to increase their crop yields and quality.

近日，他写信给习近平总书记，汇报了十多年来从事粮食生产、帮助群众脱贫等情况和体会，表达了继续做好农业研发推广工作，带动更多农民多种粮、种好粮的决心。

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the nation has about 3.9 million large family farms and over 2.2 million agricultural cooperatives.

据农业农村部统计，全国大型家庭农场数量约有390万个，农业合作社超过220万个。

Meanwhile, small-scale farms account for over 90 percent of China's agricultural production, according to the latest national agricultural census, which was published in 2017.

根据2017年发布的第三次全国农业普查公报显示，全国小农户从业人员占农业从业人员的90%以上。

About 210 million rural households operate farms smaller than 0.67 hectare, according to the census.

Tang Lixia, a professor and deputy dean at the College of International Development and Global Agriculture of China Agricultural University, said that, in the letter, Xi reaffirmed the role of large-scale farms in ensuring China's food security.

中国农业大学国际发展与全球农业学院教授、副院长唐丽霞表示，习近平总书记在信中重申了规模化农场在保障中国粮食安全中的作用。

"Compared with small-scale farms, it is easier to promote the use of agricultural machinery and scale up input in science and technology at large-scale farms, which can increase the yield of crops and farmers' incomes," she said.

她说：“与小规模农场相比，大型农场更容易推广使用农业机械并加大科技投入，从而提高农作物产量和农民收入。”

She said Xi's letter came at an opportune time as the nation was wrapping up its summer harvests and preparing for the planting of its autumn crops.

Xi's underscoring of China's food security was even more significant, as the Ukraine crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have led to higher global commodity prices, especially among staple foodstuffs, she said.

The nation's per capita share of grain reached 483 kilograms in 2021, higher than the internationally recognized security line of 400 kg, Vice-Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Deng Xiaogang said at a news briefing on Tuesday.

今年是香港回归祖国后的第25年。前不久，香港特区政府推出了庆祝香港回归祖国25周年的主题曲(theme song)《前》，有20余位香港及内地歌手参与其中。他们之中，有曾红极一时的歌坛巨星，也有风头正盛的00后新秀。尽管他们不能代表那个时代的全部，但是他们始终在用自己的能量，发扬(carry forward)着属于他们的狮子山精神。

国家主席习近平于2017年6月30日到访香港少年警讯永久活动中心暨青少年综合训练营。当时18岁的邓宇轩和11岁的郭宏晞为习主席介绍少年警讯各项活动及营内设施。

President Xi Jinping visited the Junior Police Call Permanent Activity Centre (JPC) on June 30, 2017 during his three-day inspection tour in Hong Kong. Tang Yu-hin, who was an 18-year-old student at the time, and 11-year-old Kwok Wang-hei, two representatives from the center, briefed Xi JPC's facilities and activities. 

现在已经是中学生的郭宏晞回忆当初见面点滴，表示对习主席关注香港青少年发展尤其印象深刻。“主席和我讲， ‘少年好，国家好。少年强，国家强 ’。意味着主席对我们香港的青少年有很深切的关注。” 他说。

"President Xi told me: 'The country will get better, when the youth get better. The country will become stronger, when the youth become stronger.' That means he really cares about Hong Kong youth," Kwok, who is now a high school student at Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School, told China Daily in a recent interview. 

而今年23岁的邓宇轩，已经在香港政府部门屋宇处工作。他说当家人知道他与主席见面并交谈时，都十分开心。“回到家以后，我的父母就开着电话与亲戚朋友打视频电话。他们说现在马上想和我握手，因为我刚刚和习主席握完手。所以都是很开心，这份喜悦是共通的。”

"When I got home, my parents were making video calls to our relatives and friends. They said they wanted to shake hands with me right now, because I had just shaken hands with President Xi. So it was a common joy shared between me and my family," Tang said. He is now 23 and working at Hong Kong's Buildings Department.

2018年新春佳节前夕，少年警讯成员亲手制作新春贺卡向习主席送上新年祝福。习主席亲自回信表示感谢，并对他们作出勉励。

Some members of the JPC sent President Xi a greeting card that they made by hand themselves for the 2018 Spring Festival. The card delivered festive wishes and expectations of meeting President Xi again. President Xi extended Lunar New Year greetings and words of encouragement to members of the JPC after receiving the Spring Festival card from them.

“他在公务繁忙之余都花了很多的心思来写回信给我们。这让我们感到非常之惊喜，也非常之感恩。主席在信中说的我都记得，所以之后我都参加了不少的交流团。有去过酒泉看卫星发射基地。我们也有一个‘相聚国旗下’的交流团。通过这些交流，我们了解到许多内地正在发生的事。”邓宇轩说。

"He took time off from his busy schedule to write back to us. It was a great surprise to us. We were also very grateful. He called on us to 'read thousands of books and walk thousands of miles'. I remember all the words the president said and that's why I joined many exchange programs afterward. I went to Jiuquan (in northern China) to see the satellite launch base. I also had an exchange program named Meeting Under the Flag. I learned a lot about what is happening on the Chinese mainland through those exchange programs," Tang said. 

展望未来，两位香港青少年都表达了要服务香港，报效祖国的决心。郭宏晞说：“自从收到回信之后，我就以读书为目标。我希望可以尽量将我的学业管理好，之后可以做一些服务香港的工作，也希望将来可以报效国家。” 

Looking forward, both Tang and Kwok aspire to contributing to Hong Kong and the nation. "After I received the reply, I made the decision to study hard. I hope I can manage my class workload. In the future, I hope to serve Hong Kong and serve the country with my actions," said Kwok.

邓宇轩则说：“如果我再有机会见到主席，我会对他说我没有辜负当时您对我的期望。我现在白天在政府工作，夜晚或是空余时间做一名辅警，继续服务香港。希望在未来有更宏大的发展，可以报效祖国。”

"If I have the chance to meet the President again, I would say to him, I have lived up to the expectations you had of me at that time. I am now working in the government and helping to develop Hong Kong. I serve Hong Kong as an auxiliary police officer at night and in my spare time. I hope that I will be able to serve our country more holistically in the future," said Tang.

售价19.9的“熬夜水”卖断货，医生建议：好好睡觉

For many shoppers, it can be quite difficult not to notice a drink on store shelves with a whole ginseng root soaking in every bottle.

近日，某便利店的“熬夜水”火出圈，每一瓶这种水里面都浸泡了一整根人参。

"Stay up a whole night and drink the whole thing" is the botanical drink's advertising slogan, which claims that it can help people regain energy.

该商品的广告号称“熬一整夜喝一整根”，声称这种水可以帮助人们解决熬夜后遗症；益智、开心、明目、除邪气、止惊悸、定魂魄、安精神、主补五脏；调节肌体新陈代谢。

About a month ago, the drink, simply called "The Whole Thing", first retailed at Lawson convenience stores. Now it has become a trending topic on Chinese social media.

大约一个月前，“一整根”熬夜水在罗森便利店有售，现在已经成为社交媒体的热门话题。

According to the manufacturer, the ginseng used in the drink is farmed and less than five years old. Some trade insiders said that the wholesale price for such ginseng is only about two yuan each. 

从业十余年的长白山特产商表示，“一整根”中的人参为人工种植而非林下参，从产品图片来看，一根批发价为2元左右。

Luo Xiang, an employee of a bank on Beijing's Financial Street, went to a nearby Lawson during his lunch break on Friday specifically looking for the drink.

北京金融街一家银行的员工罗翔（音译）在周五午休的时候专门去便利店购买“一整根”。

"People are talking about it on social media. I'm just curious," he said while going through the ingredients listed on the label.

“看到大家在社交媒体上谈论它，我就很好奇”，他在浏览包装上列出的成分时说。

"The ginseng in it can boost energy. And the herbal drink contains no sugar or fat. It really appeals to young people who often choose to stay up late for work or have fun while trying to look after their health," said the 27-year-old, who ended up buying four bottles for himself and his colleagues.

Luo said his team had to work overtime on Friday, so the drinks are perfect for the occasion.

Retailing at 19.9 yuan ($2.98) for a 480-milliliter bottle, The Whole Thing is the most expensive non-alcoholic drink for sale at the convenience store.

According to the product's guidance, after finishing the contents people can refill the bottle with the ginseng root in it with warm water eight times within eight hours.

"I don't expect to feel any effect. But having a bottled drink with a whole ginseng root in it on your desk while working late can be quite comforting," he laughed.

Wang Xing, a doctor specializing in cardiovascular medicine, said marketing a product as something that can help people recover from burning the midnight oil is just a promotional stunt.

"The damage of staying up the whole night, such as feeling weak, is irreversible. It can only increase the risks of cardiovascular disease," Wang said. He added that all people need to do to avoid symptoms caused by staying up late is to have a good night's sleep.

Shortly after China launched the Fujian, the country's third aircraft carrier, the good news flew thousands of miles to the memorial of Chinese heroes in foreign lands with many overseas Chinese bringing photos of the Fujian to honor the sailors buried at the Chinese Beiyang Fleet Sailors' Memorial in Newcastle, the UK.

中国第三艘航母“福建舰”下水后，这一喜讯传到了数千英里外的中华英雄纪念碑，在英国纽卡斯尔市北洋水师水兵墓地里，5座并不豪华的墓碑前摆上了“福建舰”下水的照片和鲜花。

On June 17, China's third aircraft carrier and also its second domestically developed one, the Fujian, was launched in Shanghai. The ship, with a displacement of more than 80,000 tons, is the country's first carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults and arresting devices.

6月17日，中国第三艘、也是第二艘中国制造的国产航母“福建舰”在上海下水。该舰排水量达8万余吨，是国内首艘配备电磁弹射器和拦阻装置的航母。

The move was seen by experts as a milestone in the vessel's construction and future commissioning.

专家们认为此举是航母建造和未来调试的一个里程碑。

Upon learning the good news, many Chinese in the UK or other European countries visited the Beiyang Fleet Sailors' Memorial in Newcastle, carrying photos of the ship and other advanced weaponry and the national flag, paying tribute to the heroes that sacrificed their lives and were buried in a foreign land while fighting to build up the naval forces of their motherland.

得知这个好消息后，许多在英国或其他欧洲国家的华人纷纷携带我国海军最新锐舰艇等先进武器和国旗的照片，前往位于英国纽卡斯尔的北洋水师水兵墓地，向那些为建设祖国的海军而战斗时牺牲生命、葬身异国的英雄们致敬。

The memorial, located in St John's Cemetery, contains the remains of Yuan Peifu, Gu Shizhong, Lian Jinyuan, Chen Shoufu and Chen Chengkui, five Chinese sailors and part of the first two naval delegations that China sent to Europe who died in Newcastle in the 1880s.

北洋水师水兵墓地位于圣约翰墓园，清政府北洋水师的水兵袁培福、顾世忠、连金源、陈受富和陈成魁长眠于此。这五名水兵是清政府派往赴英接舰的两批北洋水师水兵的一部分，于1880年在纽卡斯尔去世。

The five tombstones, all in Chinese style, stand back from the local tombstones, facing east as if looking far away to their homeland.

Echelle Wang, a PhD student in the UK, told the Global Times on Sunday that she recently visited the memorial with one picture of China's third aircraft carrier and a screenshot of Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee. Yang told the American side during the Alaska talks that the US is not qualified to speak to China from a position of strength.

"I was quite emotional while on my way there. It should have been a long and hard journey for those soldiers when they went all the way from China to England to buy warships, and died in a foreign land unable to return to their roots. Living in the 21st century, it is unimaginable the shame they had gone through when facing the invaders at that time," Wang mentioned.

The tombs are considered to be of historical significance that mark the birth of the Beiyang, or Northern Fleet, the most powerful naval force assembled by China during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), which was bolstered by four battle cruisers China bought from Britain.

这些墓碑具有历史意义，标志着北洋水师的诞生，这是中国在清朝（1644-1911年）组建的最强大的海军力量，配有中国从英国购买的四艘战列巡洋舰。

In 1881 and 1887, the government of the Qing Dynasty sent hundreds of sailors of the Beiyang Fleet to Newcastle to bring back the cruisers China bought from Britain. Five young sailors died during the mission.

Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, president of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said he believes the new LegCo will have good interaction and cooperation with the incoming SAR government to solve deep-rooted problems and benefit the people of Hong Kong.

"The LegCo needs to cooperate with the government while also supervising their work, so there is a delicate balance. We want to work with the new government to elevate the current good executive and legislative relationship to a higher level," he said.

Under the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong", the new LegCo members are able to express different views and conduct thorough discussions on different bills efficiently, he said in an interview ahead of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, which falls on July 1.

Lueng said there is nothing unusual about ensuring "patriots administering Hong Kong", which is universal around the world. "There is no place in the world where people holding public office are not patriots," he said.

Lawmakers of the seventh-term Legislative Council swore an oath of allegiance to the HKSAR and its Basic Law in front of the national emblem on Jan 3. The 90 members are the first batch of lawmakers in Hong Kong elected under the revamped electoral system.

"The members are all patriots and are capable, professional lawmakers representing different sectors," Lueng said. "There are many experienced people who want to serve Hong Kong people and they can discuss specific issues and express different opinions without getting personal."

Leung, who also served as president for the six-term LegCo, said during the fifth and sixth-term Leg-Co, opposition LegCo members colluded with foreign forces to undermine the principle of "one country, two systems". They tried to use "two systems" to resist "one country" and prove that the "one country, two systems" principle would not work, he said.

Therefore, the central government took decisive action and introduced the National Security Law for Hong Kong and improved the electoral system.

LegCo has returned to normal and it has passed many good laws for the economy and the livelihood of people since last year, Leung said.

"The change has been obvious," he said. "The LegCo effectively passed a record 46 government bills last year, more than double the average during previous legislative years. Now, we can act like a normal legislature, discussing bills and decide whether to pass them or not."

It is not a rubber-stamp parliament as not all bills are passed and they have all gone through thorough discussion, he added.

The new LegCo has also limited the number of people in committees so that different committee members can have in-depth discussions on social problems, such as housing and youth mobility, he said.

"The practice of 'one country, two systems' in the past 25 years have been successful, despite ups and downs," Leung said. "It is an unprecedented, great and landmark concept, and one that is conducive to Hong Kong and the country, so we must conform to the principle and make sure it is implemented well."

“The term ‘vegan’ doesn’t exactly mean healthy,” Proctor cautions. “You can have a vegan cookie,” for example, “but at the end of the day, it’s still a cookie.”
