Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang has hit back at the "disinformation" about China's alleged prior knowledge of Russia's military action in Ukraine as well as the "rumors" about Moscow seeking military assistance from China, saying that all of these claims serve the purpose of "slinging mud" at China.
In an opinion piece titled "Where We Stand in Ukraine" published in The Washington Post on Tuesday, the diplomat fully explained China's position on the Ukraine crisis and dispelled rumors that were recently spread by some US officials.
Qin's response came as unidentified US officials told the New York Times that China allegedly had prior knowledge of Russia's military action and had demanded Russia delay it until the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics concluded. Recent rumors claimed that Russia was seeking military assistance from China.
"Let me say this responsibly: Assertions that China knew about, acquiesced to or tacitly supported this war are purely disinformation. All these claims serve only the purpose of shifting blame to and slinging mud at China," the Chinese diplomat said.
Qin underscored the fact that there were more than 6,000 Chinese citizens in Ukraine before the conflict, and that China is the biggest trading partner of both Russia and Ukraine and the largest importer of crude oil and natural gas in the world.
"Conflict between Russia and Ukraine does no good for China," he said. "Had China known about the imminent crisis, we would have tried our best to prevent it."
He also warned Washington against threatening to impose sanctions against Chinese companies on the one hand and seeking China's support and cooperation on the other.
"Threats against Chinese entities and businesses, as uttered by some US officials, are unacceptable. Neither war nor sanctions can deliver peace. Wielding the baton of sanctions at Chinese companies while seeking China's support and cooperation simply won't work," Qin said.
Observers said that amid the worsened ties between Beijing and Washington in recent years, US politicians have used every opportunity to spread disinformation to smear or discredit China in an attempt to make political gains for themselves or have more bargaining power in negotiations with China. They have played such tricks since the COVID-19 pandemic started and did so after the Ukraine crisis broke out, they said.
Just before the meeting between Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Rome, Italy, on Monday, some US officials claimed that Russia had sought military assistance from China.
During the meeting, Yang stressed that China firmly opposes any words and deeds that spread disinformation and distort and smear China's position.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied such claims on Monday, saying Russia has not asked China for military help for use in Ukraine. Commenting on the same claim, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the US' practice is nothing short of spreading disinformation.
"The US has been creating and spreading disinformation from time to time. This is neither professional nor ethical, still less responsible. By doing so, the US will further lose the trust of the world," Zhao said at a regular news conference on Monday.
What the US should do is deeply reflect upon its role in the evolving situation of the Ukraine crisis, and do more things that can help to ease the situation, he added.

Recently, a toddler accidentally shooting his mother causes concern.
The 3-year-old boy found a gun in the back seat of a vehicle, picked it up and accidentally shot his mother, killing her at 9:34 pm Saturday, according to Chicago Tribune.
The victimwas identifiedas 22-year-old Dejah Bennet.Soon after Bennet put the child in his car seat and she sat down in the driver's seat, the toddler found and picked up a gun that had been left unattended.
Policesaid they are confident the boy fired the gun. However, investigators have already determined that the father legally owned the weapon but did not have a concealed carry permit he would have needed to carry it in the vehicle.
Andrew Holmes, a trustee for the city of Dolton and a comjunity activist, said the accidental shooting happened in the community in Dolton."This child has to go through this trauma for the rest of his life," Holmes said. "He's going to miss his mother."
Holmes distributed 400 gun locks in Chicago on Feb.26 and an additional 400 in Dolton outside the supermarket Sunday.
“Accidental shootings such as this happen all too often. Making sure a gun is locked and stored away should be a priority for all gun owners, but especially for parents and guardians,” Holmes said.
“Guns kill, especially when it gets in the hands of children and it’s not the child’s fault,” Holmes said. “It’s the adult’s fault because they have a responsibility to keep these guns locked down and away from these kids.”
According to data analyzed by advocacy groupEverytown for Gun Safety on CBS’s report, so far this year there have been at least 43 unintentional shootings by children in the US, resulting in 16 deaths and 29 injuries.
Last year, there were at least 379 unintentional shootings by children nationwide, resulting in 154 deaths and 244 injuries, the group said.
According to a 2021 reportreported by ABC, the group suggested a number of factors have contributed to a significant increase in these shootings in recent years.
"In 2020, gun sales surged 64 percent, and this rise—coupled with school and childcare center closures as a result of the pandemic—has increased the risk for all household residents: the number of unintentional shooting deaths by children was 31 percent higher from March through December 2020 than during the same period in 2019," the report said.
Still, someUSstates have introduced frightening gun "promotion" measures.
Some teachers at Grand Saline Independent School District in Texas are now packing heat — and educators won’t hesitate to “take out” an armed student if necessary, according to New York Post on March 7.
A US gun manufacturer hasunveileda semi-automatic rifle for kids modeled on the AR-15, which has been used in a number of deadly mass shootings, sparking condemnation form gun safety groups. The gun dubbed the JR-15 is being marketed by maker WEE1 Tactical, according to AFP on Feb 19.
The United States holds a tragic world record--the country with the most civilian-held firearms in the world, with far more guns than people within its geographical boundaries.
The latest data from the US non-profit organization "Gun Violence Archives" website shows that in the past 2021, there were 691 vicious gun violence cases involving more thanfour deaths and injuries in the United States. Since the website started tracking gun violence cases in the United States in 2013, these figures are the highest ever recorded by the website. In 2021, 44,858 people in the US died by gun violence, including 20,768 deaths from non-suicide-related shootings.

Dynamic zero-COVID policy working, NHC says
The latest COVID-19 epidemic, which has affected 28 provincial-level regions, is controllable, and China will continue with its dynamic zero-COVID policy, which has proved to be effective against the highly infectious Omicron variant, the National Health Commission said on Tuesday.
Mi Feng, commission spokesman, said at a news briefing that the fast-spreading Omicron variant is the principal cause of most of the domestic outbreaks.
"With the increasing occurrence of infection clusters, the number of new cases has risen rapidly and a growing number of regions have been hit by the virus," he said. "The epidemic situation is severe and complicated."
Lei Zhenglong, deputy director of the commission's Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control, said that as of Monday, the Chinese mainland had recorded more than 15,000 local infections in 28 provincial-level regions this month, amid the fourth wave of pandemic that hit its neighbors hard.
On Monday, the Chinese mainland registered 3,507 locally transmitted infections, nearly double the figure from the previous day. About 1,650 asymptomatic infections were also reported for Monday, according to the commission.

Lei said that the outbreaks in Jilin, Shandong, Guangdong and Hebei provinces, as well as in Shanghai municipality, were still developing and some regions are seeing a rapid increase in new cases.
Nearly 90 percent of the confirmed cases on Mond northeastern province of Jilin. However, most of them are asymptomatic or mild cases, and only six patients were in critical or severe condition in hospitals, the commission said.
Health authorities said that China's dynamic zero-COVID policy-which features a combination of targeted lockdowns, mass testing and rapid isolation-has proved effective in tackling outbreaks of Omicron.
"Local governments are accelerating screening and the transferring and quarantine of people at risk," he said, adding that the situation is controllable.
The State Council's Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism has sent working groups to at least six provinces to help local governments take more resolute and science-based virus control measures.
Lei said greater effort will be devoted to strengthening examination of imported cold chain products, improving cross-regional coordination in tracking down high-risk groups, and further promoting mass vaccinations, particularly for people over age 80.
Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Monday that the key to China's virus control strategy is to cut transmission chains in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.
"As long as we overcome lax attitudes and stick to strict implementation of regular virus control measures, this round of the epidemic will be effectively contained in the next couple of weeks," he said.
According to the commission, China has fully vaccinated nearly 1.24 billion people, including more than 211 million people age 60 and above.
Wang Huaqing, chief immunization planning expert at the China CDC, said that the emergence of Omicron has lifted the death rate for seniors to a record high in some foreign countries.
"At present, we should not treat the COVID-19 disease as seasonal flu," he said. "Primary inoculation and booster shots are very essential for the elderly."

Train your brain for better sleep with 3 expert tips
1. Make a schedule, and stick to it
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body to regulate when you get sleepy and when you wake up. As night approaches, levels of melatonin rise, becoming a signal to the body that it's time for bed. Production of melatonin is stopped by light -- so levels naturally fall as daylight approaches, getting you ready to greet the day.
To work properly, the release of this hormone needs to occur at regular times, said clinical psychologist and sleep expert Michael Grandner. So if your bedtime and wake up time change from day to day or on weekends, he said, your sleep rhythms aren't predictable and the body doesn't know how to respond.
Therefore it's important to have a standard wake up time, even on weekends, vacations or after a night of poor sleep.
2. Don't lay in bed awake
It's a golden rule in sleep medicine, backed by "decades of data," Grandner said. In fact, he said this tip is so powerful that when used in his sleep clinic it "can even beat prescription sleep medications."
"The best sleep tip you can ever give somebody is get up -- don't lay in bed awake but not sleeping," Grandner said. "Whether it's the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don't spend that time awake in bed."
Why is that so important? Because lying in bed awake can form an association in your brain that can lead to chronic insomnia, Grandner explained. Instead of being a restful spot where you peacefully fall asleep, your bed becomes an anxious place where you toss and turn and wake up tired.
Establishing that positive relationship between the bed and sleep can be beneficial on nights where your schedule has to be erratic due to work or travel, Grandner added.
"Let's say you need to go to bed extra early," he said. "The bed now has the power to help overcome your racing mind and allow you to fall asleep."
3. Change your attitude about sleep
Many people view sleeping as the final thing they have to do in a jam-packed day, worth delaying to catch up on housework, schoolwork, office work or the latest binge-worthy television series.
That thinking needs to be changed, Grander said.
"Don't see your sleep as the amount of time you have left in your day," he advised. "See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow."
It may sound like a small shift in thinking, but it's an important one, Grander added.
Most adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep to be fully rested, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So if a person needed to rise at 7 am each day, backtiming eight hours would require a bedtime of 11 pm.
"Now you know when you have to stop and get ready to go to bed whether you're done or not," Grander said. "The problem is we don't stop, and we don't disconnect. And that's to our detriment and it makes the next day more stressful."

Experts back zero-COVID control policy
As China strives to contain its biggest COVID-19 surge in two years, officials and experts have urged continuation of the dynamic zero-COVID strategy and enforcement of science-based control measures to halt the spread of the virus.
Despite the large spike in new cases and challenges in blocking the highly transmissible Omicron variant, they said the goal of zero infection in communities must be achieved to protect medical systems from being overstretched and a jump in related deaths.
More sustainable response strategies should be devised, such as providing home test kits, antiviral pills and better preparing healthcare services.
The Chinese mainland reported 1,337 locally transmitted, confirmed infections for Sunday, down from over 1,800 the previous day. However, it was the second day in a row that confirmed infections topped 1,000.
The number of asymptomatic cases also went down by about 500 to 788 on Sunday, according to the National Health Commission.
Lei Zhenglong, deputy head of the commission's Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control, said on Monday that the recent epidemic has affected 27 provincial-level regions. As of Sunday, more than 10,000 domestic infections had been reported this month.
The country's virus control strategy is still effective against the Omicron variant, but Omicron's stealth and rapid transmission means that faster and stricter measures should be taken, he said.
The hardest-hit regions include Jilin and Guangdong provinces and Shanghai.
Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan arrived in Jilin on Sunday to guide local virus control work, and visited a local high school and a residential complex.
The province registered 895 locally transmitted, confirmed cases, or nearly 67 percent of total cases nationwide for Sunday, presenting a "severe and complicated situation", according to Sun.
During the inspection, she stressed local authorities should cope with the outbreak in a resolute, scientific, and effective manner, and strictly implement mass testing, quarantine and treatment protocols to achieve zero cases as soon as possible.
China approved on Sunday the use of rapid antigen testing kits, and Sun said screening for infections should be accelerated via both nucleic acid and antigen tests and improved organization.

More aid will be sent to Jilin to boost its ability to conduct epidemiological investigations. While high-risk groups must undergo centralized quarantine, people at lower risk can isolate at home, she said.
The latest outbreaks sweeping the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region are mainly caused by the highly transmissible subvariant of Omicron, known as BA. 2, according to experts.
Zhang Wenhong, head of the infectious disease department at Fudan University's Huashan Hospital in Shanghai, said it is vital to stay confident, calm and clear-minded, and to not give up the fight against the virus.
"The infections in the mainland are still in the early stage of an exponential rise," he said on the microblogging platform Sina Weibo. "Because of a surge of cases in a relatively short span, many regions have appeared to be flustered."
With local authorities implementing targeted lockdowns and speeding up screening of key areas, Zhang said the virus' spread will eventually be slowed.
Based on discussions with virologists at the University of Hong Kong, he said the virulence of the new strain has decreased, and that fully vaccinated people and those with normal immune systems are unlikely to develop serious symptoms.
Only 0.1 percent of the 2,266 patients being treated in Shanghai over the past six months have been classified as having severe cases, and no one has died, he added.
Based on Hong Kong data, the death rate of people who aren't fully immunized is 23 times higher than those have received two shots.
Though the virus has become milder and less lethal, Zhang argues against relaxing virus containment policies.
"If China opens up too quickly, many people will get infected quickly, leading to a staggering number of hospitalizations, strained medical systems and an impact on society," he said. The consequences would be unimaginable for the elderly and those with underlying health problems who have not been vaccinated for fear of side effects, he said.
While it is vital for China to continue its strategy of achieving zero infection and bring the wave of Omicron infections under control, "it doesn't mean that we will impose lockdowns and mass testing persistently", he said.
When the outbreaks are stamped out, it is essential to seize the window of opportunity to develop smarter and more sustainable strategies, such as launching an extensive booster vaccine plan for seniors, ensuring the supply of oral antiviral medicine and affordable home testing kits, and developing fully trained triage medical services and home quarantine protocols, he said.

Paralympics set Games 'benchmark'|
After a warm closing ceremony and the extinguishing of the Paralympic flame in the maincauldron, the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games concluded on Sunday after giving testimony to how sports can bring the world together, while the Games have left legacies for the host nation and future Paralympics.

US para Alpine skier Patrick Halgren, who finished in 24th place in men's slalom standing competition, also said he had a great experience in Beijing.
"I couldn't even have imagined something that good in the venue, how all the locations and the roads get you everywhere. Thanks from the bottom of my heart, and it means so much. It's better than I imagined. I'm living my dream," said Halgren.
The venues, which will continue hosting sports events in the future and be open to the public, the barrier-free facilities in the venues, and the host cities' transportation systems are expected to be lasting legacies of the Beijing Winter Paralympics, benefiting the Chinese people in the future.

The mystery of US bio-labs in Ukraine
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to some unexpected discoveries. Russian media outlets recently reported that the Pentagon had commissioned more than 30 biological laboratories in Ukraine, where large quantities of dangerous viruses were stored.
The United States supposedly depends on these laboratories to implement its biological warfare research. And these are only a handful, or less than 10 percent of the 336 biological laboratories the US reportedly controls in 30 countries around the world.
No wonder the US was desperately pushing for "origin-tracing" studies for the COVID-19 outbreak at Chinese laboratories. Maybe because they have laboratories spread around the world, they are aware of the high risks of viruses leaking and triggering pandemics. They assumed similar risks from Chinese laboratories, but that is stretching it too far.
It is the US that's ill, but it is forcing China to take the pill. And that's precisely why the US has failed to bring COVID-19 under controlon its shores. Instead of acknowledging the problem it is busy blaming others.
It is now also clear why the US has, for four decades, tried to prevent the Biological Weapons Convention from establishing a checking mechanism. Of the 182 signatories to the convention, the US is the only one that pulled out of negotiations for such a mechanism in 2001. It is clear that by doing so the US wants to protect the secrets of its 336 biological labs worldwide.
Latest reports say that the US embassy in Ukraine hurriedly deleted information related to the biological labs there. But they cannot wash away the fact about the existence of such laboratories around the world. It is time the US published information about these biological laboratories, including what kind of viruses are stored there, what "research" is going on and what harm they pose to people in these countries and around the world. The world should demand answers.

Few would have expected that spectators at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics would include animals. And yet, coverage of the event featured several sightings of wildlife, particularly leopard cats apparently seeking to get in on the action.
On Jan 31, on the alpine ski slopes in Yanqing district, 90 kilometers northwest of Beijing, a leopard cat was spotted strolling through an award-ceremony rehearsal.

The event caught the attention of volunteers and staff, with many snapping photos. Three days later, a Chinese photographer captured another leopard cat in the woods near the Olympic ski slopes. The creature ran past him, jumped over a fence and looked back.
Among those most excited by these sightings was Luo Shujin, an avid skier and a conservation biologist at Peking University.
Leopard cats are wild felids, slightly larger than house cats, and they mostly steer clear of human activity. However, according to Luo, the frequent appearance of the animals close to the ski runs indicates that the species has persisted in this human-dominated landscape, which is relatively close to the megacity of Beijing. And, their calm demeanor suggests they are not frightened by human activity.

Luo says in the absence of any research data, it is too early to draw any conclusions that the creation of the Olympic skiing venue has not affected the surrounding forests and wildlife. However, she says it's possible that the wild cats have to some extent already adapted to coexistence with humans, likely because people at the venue have not shown an aggressive attitude toward the animals since its construction.
Luo, 46, has been studying the wildlife around Yanqing for years. In December 2018, she was tracking leopard cat droppings on a hill when she discovered that the animals were living close to the ski resort. She found this surprising and decided to gather photographic evidence of wildlife in the area.
"I thought about that famous pictures of a puma walking by the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, and I asked myself: Can we get a picture of a leopard cat walking by the alpine ski course of the Beijing Winter Olympics?"

To examine the state of the animal's population, she and her colleagues set up 10 infrared cameras along 15 km of the hilly trail. The efforts paid off. They got pictures of many wild animals, including roe deer, badgers, gorals and wild boar. Leopard cats were photographed three times, the first one caught on camera in February last year—with the Olympic ski runs in the background.
"Who would have thought that this mountain trail, several kilometers away from the alpine skiing course of the Beijing Winter Olympics, would be frequented by leopard cats," she says.
According to Luo, wild cats are rarely seen so close to big cities, especially metropolitan cities.
"I think this is a little-known side of Beijing," says Luo, who is proud that such wildlife can be found so close to the capital city.

Luo sent the photo to the journal Science, along with a 300-word essay titled, The Hidden Olympic Spectator, which was published on July 23, 2021, the opening day of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games.
She also shared the discovery with the 2022 Beijing Winter Games organizing committee, explaining its significance in terms of biodiversity, helping them to build a picture of the relationship between winter sports and nature.
Luo's relationship with this Winter Olympics has not been all hard work. She has also found time to indulge her passion for winter sports. After several tests, she was appointed as a technical officer on the Olympic alpine skiing referee team, bringing her even closer to the action. For Luo, being surrounded by hundreds of athletes and spectators was a thrill—a marked contrast to her solitary fieldwork.
"I was deeply touched by the exchange and communication at this grand event that spans races, languages and countries," she says. "Such an event causes me to hope that we can leverage our strengths to ensure continued coexistence between wilderness and human settlements."

Now that the 2022 Winter Olympics have ended, Luo plans to continue her leopard cat research in Yanqing district, just as her many European counterparts have carried out studies on wildlife around ski resorts near the Alps.
"The alpine skiing site on the outskirts of Beijing will be an excellent place to study how wild animals share the same space with humans," she says. "As we watch the skiers racing down the slopes, I know that the striding leopard cat will be watching us."
