Astronaut in orbit takes historic step
Senior Colonel Wang Yaping, 41, became China's first female spacewalker on Sunday evening when she took part in the Shenzhou XIII mission's first extravehicular activity with mission commander Major General Zhai Zhigang.
The extravehicular operation began at 6:51 pm when Zhai opened a hatch. By 8:28 pm, Zhai and Wang had exited the Tiangong space station, the China Manned Space Agency said in a statement.
By midnight, they had mounted new components on the station's robotic arm and used it to practice extravehicular maneuvers and rescue operations, the agency said, noting that Senior Colonel Ye Guangfu had remained inside the station to monitor and support the spacewalk, which was scheduled to last six hours.
The spacewalk was expected to further verify the robotic arm's capabilities and its compatibility with the needs of astronauts, examine the safety and performance of support devices in an extravehicular task and test the functions of a new type of extravehicular suit, the agency said.
It said the Shenzhou XIII crew will carry out one to two more spacewalks in the coming months.
A native of Shandong province and mother of a 5-year-old girl, Wang joined the People's Liberation Army Air Force in August 1997 and served as a deputy squadron commander before joining the second group of astronauts at the PLA Astronaut Division in May 2010.
In March 2012, she was part of the backup crew for the Shenzhou IX mission, and in June 2013, she took part in the Shenzhou X mission, which lasted nearly 15 days. She is the second Chinese woman to have flown in space.
During the Shenzhou X flight, Wang gave China's first space-based lecture inside the Tiangong I experimental module to more than 60 million Chinese students at about 80,000 schools across the country.
She was selected for Shenzhou XIII in December 2019 and was also a member of the backup crew for the Shenzhou XII mission.
Zhai, 55, was the first Chinese astronaut to conduct a spacewalk-he floated out of the Shenzhou VII spacecraft for about 15 minutes during its three-day mission in September 2008.
That short adventure made China the third nation in the world, following the former Soviet Union and the United States, capable of independently conducting a spacewalk.
The Shenzhou XIII mission was launched on Oct 16 by a Long March 2F carrier rocket that blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China's Gobi Desert, with the crew soon entering the Tiangong space station, whose name means Heavenly Palace. They are scheduled to spend six months working in the station, making it China's longest space mission.
Before the spacewalk, they had moved living and work materials from the Tianzhou 2 and 3 cargo spaceships to the station's core module, named Tianhe, or Harmony of Heavens, tested their extravehicular suits, and conducted training on robotic arm control and medical aid, according to the manned space agency.
Their peers in the Shenzhou XII mission, which lasted three months and concluded in mid-September, performed two spacewalks.

The recent increase in the price of vegetables in China has reached its peak, with prices of leafy greens in particular seeing an obvious decline in many areas of the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Thursday.
Tang Ke, director of the ministry's market and economic information department, said vegetable production in North China has generally returned to normal levels thanks to good weather since mid-October.
"The falling prices of spinach and lettuce in some areas reflect the improving supply and demand situation," Tang said, adding that more and more vegetables are going to the market.
Since late September, rising vegetable prices in China have raised concerns among consumers, and some leafy greens were described as more expensive than pork.
The average wholesale price of 28 kinds of vegetables in October monitored by the ministry was 5.25 yuan (82 cents) per kilogram, an increase of 16.7 percent from September and a year-on-year increase of 11.7 percent.
The decreasing market volume due to disastrous weather, higher production and transportation costs, and insufficient power supply are among the main reasons for the surge in prices.
"The northern region has suffered unpredictable, even unprecedented, autumn floods since September, resulting in damage to more than 130,000 hectares of vegetables," Tang said.
He added that the recent sporadic COVID-19 local outbreaks also posed challenges, from production to retail.
The current vegetable production and the supply during the Spring Festival holiday will be at a healthy level because only the production of some leafy vegetables has been affected.
It's estimated that in three months, the amount of vegetables will be enough to adequately supply every person in China with 1.5 kilograms per day.
"Vegetables were expensive last week, with broccoli priced at 20 yuan per kilogram. I found it dropped a little bit today; now, it's only 12 yuan. That's great," a resident in Beijing's Chaoyang district said on Wednesday.
Officials at the ministry said the supply of food being sold in the supermarket was sufficient even when the epidemic was at its highest point last year.
"Our grain production is abundant, and stocks are sufficient. We can buy whatever we want, whenever we want in the supermarket," said Liu Lihua, deputy director of the ministry's plantation management department.
Qin Yuyun, an official with the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, said the domestic food market supply is completely ensured. The current grain inventory in China is at a relatively high level, and the two major staples-wheat and rice-account for more than 70 percent of the total inventory, he said.
"Taking wheat as an example, the stocks continue to increase, and can meet the consumption demand for one and a half years amid the successive bumper harvests," Qin said.
Given the strong capacity of processing grain and oil, "the daily processed rice and noodles will be enough for all Chinese people to eat for two days", Qin said.
Moreover, China has more than 5,500 enterprises for grain processing to deal with emergencies, he said.
"Thirty-six large and medium-sized cities can ensure more than 20 days of grain and edible oil supply from their inventories," he added.

The first day after moving to Beijing from New York, Ella Kidron shook off her jet lag with a run at 4 am in her new city home. That was in July 2016. She still clearly remembers seeing the sun coming up over the city and its sweeping streets.
That started a passion for exploring the city through running. This was the way she wanted to see, feel and hear the city and it allowed her to meet new friends.
"For me, running in Beijing is about juxtaposition-it's enjoying the quiet in a bustling city and shuttling back and forth between history and modernity," she says.
Kidron, a senior manager of international corporate affairs at e-commence platform JD, put her running story into a video titled Discovering Beijing's Limitless Possibilities. That video, which runs just over two minutes, won her the top award for the "100 Reasons to Love Beijing" short video and essay competition.
"Running in Beijing means treasure hunts, mystery and surprise," she says in the video. "It's a reminder of the unlimited possibilities of this city. It makes this place, which is more than 6,000 miles away from where I grew up, feel like home."
The event, organized by the Information Office of Beijing Municipality and the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, gathered around 900 videos and 400 articles created by over 1,000 foreigners from around 100 countries and regions.
Another winner of the competition, Kelly Dawson, who's Kidron's colleague, likes to explore the alleyways, but on her scooter. Her video, Unexpected Beijing, is about her adventures in the hutong, her favorite aspect of Beijing, and it snagged her third prize in the competition.
Growing up in Hong Kong and studying and working in the US, Dawson moved to Beijing in 2014 and has witnessed the city's evolution.
Living in a hutong, Dawson feels at peace, protected from the hustle and bustle. She hears one neighbor practicing piano, or the baby of another. "There's definitely a feeling of being in a community that's quite charming," she says.
Their videos are filmed and edited by their Chinese colleagues. Kidron's video was taken in winter. She picked places she has been to that impressed her when running.
"Telling my story of Beijing is a way to express my gratitude to the city," she says, adding that, by making the video, she also wants to say thank you to her colleagues who have been so patient in helping her to learn more about the city.
Sometimes she might get lost and just ask people for directions. Now she has a mental map of Beijing, but there are still new places to see. "The Summer Palace is on my to-do list," she says.
When she runs in the hutong, she tends to pay attention to the architecture and the people. Sometimes she stops and talks to the locals, some of whom even recommend restaurants nearby. "There is no real destination; it's really about exploration, being open and learning something new."
For her, running is not only a great way to meet people, but also a good way to organize her thoughts.
"Sometimes when I'm writing something, I'll go for a run and figure out the outline in my head. It's the same way when I was swimming," she says.
Kidron's work is to tell the company's story and help people understand it better. She thinks that, as the company began in Beijing, part of its story is intertwined with that of Beijing, which encouraged her to learn more about the city and its development over the past five years.
"The city is developing so fast and, at the same time, there are things that haven't changed. In a place where so much is changing, it's also nice to see older parts being preserved," she says.
"It's exploring thousands of years of history on the one hand, but welcoming the opportunities that tomorrow brings on the other."
She notes that there are many parts of the city that she still hasn't explored. Living in Beijing for five years, Kidron thinks her journey in the city, and across the country, is just getting started.

Covid-19 deaths pass 5 million worldwide︱
More than five million people are known to have died of Covid-19 worldwide, 19 months since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Vaccines have slowed the death rate, but some health experts say the true toll could be far higher.
The milestone comes amid warnings from health officials that cases and deaths in some places are rising for the first time in months.
Nearly 250 million cases of the virus have been recorded worldwide.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the pandemic's real global death toll could be two to three times higher than official records.
How much testing individual countries carry out will have a bearing on their death figures. Very few deaths have occurred in Africa, for example, compared to other continents and this is likely to be one factor.
In the US, more than 745,800 people have died, making it the country with the highest number of recorded deaths.
It is followed by Brazil, with 607,824 recorded deaths, and India, with 458,437. But health experts believe these numbers are under reported, partly because of deaths at home and those in rural communities.
It has taken the world longer to reach the latest one million deaths than the previous two.
It took over 110 days to go from four million deaths to five million. That is compared to just under 90 days to rise from three million to four million.

Facebook changes its name to Meta in major rebrand︱Facebook正式宣布更名为Meta 将全力进军“元宇宙”
Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebrand.
The company said it would better "encompass" what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR).
The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, only the parent company that owns them.
The move follows a series of negative stories about Facebook, based on documents leaked by an ex-employee.
Frances Haugen has accused the company of putting "profits over safety".
In 2015, Google restructured its company calling its parent firm Alphabet, however, the name has not caught on.
Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name as he unveiled plans to build a "metaverse" - an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets.
He said the existing brand could not "possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future", and needed to change.
"Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we're building towards," he told a virtual conference.
The company also unveiled a new sign at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Thursday, replacing its thumbs-up "Like" logo with a blue infinity shape.
Mr. Zuckerberg said the new name reflects that over time, users will not need to use Facebook to use the company's other services.
The word "meta" comes from the Greek word meaning "beyond".
To an outsider, a metaverse may look like a version of VR, but some people believe it could be the future of the internet.
Instead of being on a computer, people in a metaverse might use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments.
It is hoped the virtual world could be used for practically anything from work, play and concerts, to socializing with friends and family.

Guests who were inside the park were reminded to strictly comply with epidemic prevention measures including wearing a mask and maintaining social distance at all times. Customers can also purchase blankets and cloaks at Disney shops to keep warm, according to social media posts by visitors at the park.
"Shanghai Disneyland is highly responsive and considerate in terms of its contingency plans," Xie Shichen, a guest going through the testing procedure, wrote in a memo posted on People's Daily's online channel. "Chinese and English bilingual notices are broadcast, informing people of ticket refund and exchange policies," Xie said. "In a nutshell, the responses are smooth, precise and fast."
At the meantime, the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission dispatched 220 shuttle buses to fetch visitors, after suspending operations of metro Line 11— a key subway route connecting Disneyland and the city center— from 20:15 on Sunday.
Upon leaving the resort, guests are also required to undergo a second round of nucleic acid testing after 24 hours. If both tests are confirmed to be negative, they will then be asked to follow a 12-day self-health monitoring protocol.
Per the request of the Shanghai municipal government's epidemic prevention and control task force, people who had visited the resort over the weekend need to immediately notify their residential neighborhood committees, companies and schools, and take COVID-19 tests at designated hospitals and clinics. The office has published a list of 34 designated testing sites, which are open 24 hours.

US breaking its commitment
Neither the "faith" Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen expressed in an interview on Wednesday that the United States would defend the island if it is attacked nor the US "commitment" to protect the island, which US President Joe Biden stressed last week, mean that is a certainty.
Before US lives are truly sacrificed for the island, what Tsai hankers for is simply US politicians' verbal support, something the Biden administration has been willing to do, and done a good job of so far. But for the US, there is only one commitment that matters and that is to its hegemony. Taiwan is simply a means to that end, as it is a convenient and relatively cheap way of putting pressure on Beijing. It can even profit from it monetarily if it can sell out-of-date weapons to the island.
But the duet, in colluding with each other to continuously keep the kindling of cross-Straits tensions smoldering — Tsai confirmed US military personnel training the island forces for the first time on Wednesday, while Biden called China's actions in the Straits "coercive" that day — blithely ignore the well-being of residents on the island.
For the secessionists on the island their vainglorious pursuit comes before all else. While for the strategists in Washington the island is simply an unsinkable aircraft carrier with which to defend the US hegemony.
Claiming to uphold a rules-based order, the two sides have never ceased trying to provoke Beijing to resort to extreme measures to resolve the Taiwan question, in a bid to bring the full weight of the international community against it.
The logic of their trick is clear: to occupy the moral high ground by portraying the island as a model of democracy and to isolate the Chinese mainland from the rest of the international community by provoking it to attack "democracy".
Such tricks failed in Hong Kong with the introduction of the National Security Law for the special administrative region. And they will not work now.
The 1992 Consensus, the one-China policy and the three joint communiques lay the foundation for peace and stability across the Straits, and have been the guarantee for the island's economic boom over the past decades.
Beijing has been doing all it can to consolidate this foundation, while the secessionists on the island and the Washington ideologues have been doing the opposite. It is clear to any impartial observer which party is the promoter of regional peace and stability, and which are the saboteurs.
After US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement on Tuesday in support of the island joining the UN system, a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry cautioned that by playing games with the secessionists on the island the US is walking on a road that has a dead end, since it will necessarily cause "seismic" risks to Sino-US relations, and seriously undermine stability in the Taiwan Straits and damage US interests.
Those cautionary words are offered in good faith.
