They made the remarks on Tuesday after Beijing prosecutors approved the arrest of Kris Wu, one of China's most popular celebrities, on Monday on suspicion of rape.

The people's procuratorate in the capital's Chaoyang district posted a statement on Sina Weibo on Monday saying it had approved the arrest of a suspect surnamed Wu.

Chinese media outlets then confirmed the suspect was 30-year-old Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Kris Wu, who was detained by police on July 31 after he was accused of tricking young women into having sex.

孟晚舟案审理结束丨Huawei CFO's legal team presents final arguments

As Meng Wanzhou's extradition hearing resumed this week in Canada, her legal team made a last pitch to the judge to stay the proceeding, arguing that there is no evidence showing that the Huawei executive caused HSBC to violate US sanctions against Iran.

Meng and Huawei Technologies deny the accusations.

The People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command conducted a coordinated joint assault drill on Tuesday in the airspace and southwestern and southeastern waters off the island of Taiwan, in a solemn response to foreign interference and provocations from Taiwan separatist forces.

Senior Colonel Shi Yi, the spokesman for the command, said the drill involved warships, anti-submarine aircraft, fighter jets and other military units, with a goal to test the command's coordinated combat capability.

Despite the one-China principle and three China-US joint communiques, the US has constantly breached its own commitments in recent years by engaging in official exchanges with Taiwan, and has sold arms to it and helped the region to expand its so-called international space.

In the afternoon of August 1, Su Bingtian broke the Asian record with a score of 9.83 seconds at the men's 100-meter semi-final at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. Ranking first among all the runners who advanced to the final, Su was the first Chinese athlete to enter the men's 100-meter final in the Games.

"When I entered the final, I guess I could not win a medal." Su explained. "At that time, my goal was to pass anyone I could pass. My final score was 9.98 seconds, which is already beyond what many Asians could achieve. I'm more happy than regretful."

During the interview, Su Bingtian analyzed that other runners grabbing the run during the 100-meter final didn't have much impact on him. In addition, the process of the 100-meter race enabled Su Bingtian to identify his current shortcomings more clearly.

Su introduced that the interval between the semi-final and the final of the 100-meter race is less than 3 hours. With too many things to prepare, he had little time to rest.

In the men's 4x100 meter relay preliminaries on August 5, the Chinese men's team, consisting of Tang Xingqiang, Xie Zhenye, Su Bingtian and Wu Zhiqiang, advanced to the final with the top record of 37.92 seconds. However, the Chinese team finished 4th with 37.79 seconds in the final, missing out on an Olympic medal.

In Su's opinion, the results he achieved in the Tokyo Summer Olympics may not be the peak of his career. "I would like to make a better run in the future. It is said what I achieve is already beyond the limit of the Asian people. I totally disagree with that."

Su Bingtian said he is not sure whether he will participate in the Paris Olympics yet. "For me, I will run as long as I can. If I can still run in 2024, of course I will take the gauntlet. But I may also choose to retire if I can’t run anymore."

US soldiers killed two armed men at Kabul's airport Monday, according to the Pentagon.

Meanwhile, Russia said it has no plan to evacuate its embassy in Kabul. Zamir Kabulov, a Russian diplomat and presidential envoy to Afghanistan, said he was in direct contact with Moscow's ambassador in Kabul and added Russian embassy employees were working "calmly".

Two halves of the Quanzhou Bay cross-sea bridge — built simultaneously from both sides — were joined together on Friday in coastal Fujian province. It is the world's first bridge for high-speed trains over a sea body and will support speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour.

World's oldest coin factory found

Archaeologists excavating the remains of Guanzhuang - an ancient city in Central China's Henan province - have discovered what they believe is the oldest-known coin mint, where miniature, shovel-shaped bronze coins were mass produced some 2,600 years ago. Their research, published in the journal Antiquity, gives weight to the idea that the first coins were minted not in Turkey or Greece, as long thought, but in China.

Torrential rains affect Sichuan residents

Torrential rains have affected more than 100,000 residents in Southwest China's Sichuan province and forced the emergency evacuation of over 7,000 people, local authorities said Sunday.

COVID variant constellation names considered

New coronavirus strains could be named after constellations once the Greek alphabet is used up, a World Health Organization boss has suggested. The agency started naming new mutations after letters of the Greek alphabet back in May. So far, 11 variants have been named - including the Delta, Beta and Alpha strains.

Pesquet, an astronaut currently in outer space, helped perform the song on his saxophone from the International Space Station as a symbol of the Olympics' universality.

Born on Feb 26, 1978 in Rouen, Thomas Pesquet is the tenth astronaut to set foot in space and is one of the best-known French astronauts today.

Pesquet was selected by ESA as a candidate in May 2009, and he successfully completed his basic training in November 2010. In addition to gaining an education and skills for space, Pesquet can also speak in six languages: French, English, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and German.

Thomas was planning to take his beloved saxophone into space with him. Unexpectedly, on the day of the launch, he was informed that each astronaut can only carry a maximum of 1.5 kilograms of luggage, while his alto saxophone weighed 2.4 kilograms. He had no choice but to leave it on Earth. With a book written by French author Antoine de Saiot-Exupery, Thomas started his exploration of the universe.

托马斯打算把他心爱的萨克斯风带入太空。没想到，在发射当天，他被告知，每个宇航员最多只能携带1.5公斤的行李，而他的中音萨克斯风重达2.4公斤。他没有选择，只能把它留在地球上。带着法国作家安托万·德·圣·埃克苏佩里写的书，托马斯开始了他对宇宙的探索。

Surprisingly, his family prepared a special gift for him. On his birthday, Feb 27, Thomas found his saxophone in the supply compartment delivered by NASA. What a surprise!

Floating by the window of the space station, Thomas played his saxophone with his eyes staring at the Earth.

In July last year, Pesquet was selected by SpaceX again. He went for a second mission to space. The ISS crew reportedly took part in two and half hours of daily exercises in the shuttle to maintain their fitness levels.

As the Olympic Games have been held at a hectic pace in Tokyo, astronauts aboard the ISS have created their own brand of "Space Olympics". The crew members came up with new original ideas for the games, such as "very long jumps" and "no-hand ball", "weightless sharpshooting", and "synchronized space swimming" as they put mini flags of the participating countries atop the ISS lab.

Previously on June 18, Thomas Pesquet wrote on his Twitter account that humankind's presence in outer space has tremendously increased, thanks to the deployment of three Chinese astronauts to China's space station.
