The high court in Northeast China's Liaoning province rejected an appeal by a Canadian drug smuggler on Tuesday and upheld his death sentence.

The Liaoning High People's Court announced its decision in the case of Canadian citizen Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, who was given the death penalty by the Dalian Intermediate People's Court in the province in early 2019 for trafficking more than 222 kilograms of methamphetamine. His property and assets were also seized.

辽宁省高级人民法院宣布了对加拿大公民罗伯特·劳埃德·谢伦伯格案件的判决，他因贩运222公斤甲基苯丙胺（冰毒）于2019年初被辽宁省大连市中级人民法院判处死刑。他的财产也被全部没收。

Schellenberg had appealed to the province's high court.

After a review, the high court said in a statement posted on the Sina Weibo micro blog platform on Tuesday that the facts of the case were clear, the evidence proving Schellenberg's conviction was sufficient, the procedures carried out during the intermediate court trial were legitimate and the death penalty was appropriate.

Under China's Criminal Procedure Law, when a court sentences a person to death, the ruling should be submitted for review to the Supreme People's Court, the country's top court. The death sentence can be carried out after the top court approves it.

In the statement, the high court said it protected Schellenberg's rights during the trial, allowing him to use his own language during the proceedings, listening to his lawyers' arguments and hiring two interpreters for him.

法院依法保障了上诉人谢伦伯格的辩护、使用本国语言参与诉讼等各项权利，听取了辩护人的辩护意见，并为其聘请了2名翻译。

A number of people, including embassy officials and deputies to the National People's Congress, witnessed the announcement of the ruling on Tuesday, it added.

In November 2018, the intermediate court in Dalian sentenced Schellenberg to 15 years in prison for smuggling drugs. The Canadian appealed to the high court.

When the high court heard the case the next month, the people's procuratorate in Liaoning opposed the previous ruling, saying the lenient punishment given by the lower court was obviously inappropriate.

The high court then sent the case back to the intermediate court, ordering it to retry it with a new panel.

On Jan 14, 2019, the intermediate court sentenced Schellenberg to death after identifying him as the ringleader of an organized transnational drug smuggling attempt to transport some 222 kilograms of methamphetamine from a warehouse in China to a destination in Australia.

Held under the specter of a pandemic and threats of cancellation, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games wound up on Sunday－a success story that brought hope to the world.

International Olympic Chief Thomas Bach declared the Tokyo Games "unprecedented" and the "most challenging Olympic journey" as he addressed the near-empty 68,000-seat Olympic Stadium at the closing ceremony.

"In these difficult times we are all living through, you give the world the most precious of gifts: hope," Bach told athletes attending the ceremony.

The next Summer Olympics is scheduled for Paris in 2024, but the Olympic flame will burn again in six months when Beijing hosts the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Over the 16-day sports extravaganza in Tokyo, a total of 339 medal events were held across 33 sports with skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing and karate making their debuts. A total of 94 different countries and regions claimed a medal at Tokyo, more than at any other Games.

After a late flourish, the United States topped the medal table just ahead of China, followed by Japan.

The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council extended their congratulations and sincere greetings to the Chinese delegation on Sunday, wishing them a safe return on behalf of the country and the Chinese people.

Both hailed the excellent achievements of the delegation during the course of the Olympic Games, despite challenges and difficulties faced amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chinese delegation was urged to continue carrying forward their good tradition to further improve China's comprehensive strength in competitive sports and to arouse the enthusiasm of Chinese people, especially teenagers, for physical exercise.

The US topped the medal table with 39 golds, 41 silvers and 33 bronzes. Team China was in second with 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze medals, followed by Japan with 27 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze medals.

Team Chinese Taipei earned two golds, four silvers and six bronzes and Team Hong Kong claimed one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Sprinter Su Bingtian was chosen as Team China's flag-bearer at the closing ceremony. He was honored as the first Chinese to qualify for an Olympic men's 100-meter final as well as setting a new Asian record of 9.83 seconds in the semifinals.

"It's an honor like no other. To be an athlete, to represent China in this closing ceremony is a huge privilege," Su said.

"In Tokyo, I can see that we have made a huge improvement in athletics. For China to hit 9.83 seconds is something we've never been able to do before. This means that China has changed from a country that watches, to a country that stands shoulder to shoulder with the big guys."

Organizers of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics have taken valuable lessons from Tokyo's successful hosting of the Summer Games and its strategies to deal with COVID-19.

Thirty-four members of the Beijing Organising Committee were sent to Tokyo to take part in the International Olympic Committee's observer program. They also studied the operational challenges of staging the world's biggest sporting event during a pandemic.

After reviewing notes, documents and video footage brought home from Tokyo, the Beijing 2022 organizers are more confident about delivering streamlined and safe Winter Games, which are scheduled to start on Feb 4.

With only six months to go before the Winter Games open in Beijing and co-host Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, all 12 competition venues have been completed and tested. The remainder of the facilities are scheduled to be finished by October.

 Chinese internet giant Alibaba is working with police after a female employee accused her manager and a client of sexual assault.

Police in Jinan, capital of Shandong province, where the incidents are alleged to have taken place, said on Sunday that an investigation and evidence collection had been conducted, and they expect to release results in a timely manner.

Also on Sunday, Alibaba released a statement saying that it has a "zero-tolerance policy against sexual misconduct".

Such crimes committed publicly would incur a minimum sentence of five years in prison or detention.

The victory denied the chance of Japan taking a second table tennis title from China, following the host's victory in the mixed doubles last week.

And the rapid spread of the virus has triggered substantially upgraded pandemic prevention and control responses nationwide.

Considering the country's tried-and-tested approach to pandemic containment, featuring rigid mobility control, fears of an unstoppable wave will hopefully prove to be unfounded. The country's nationwide mobilization capacity has proved its worth before. But how well the country can perform in containing the latest wave of infections, which are mostly of the Delta variant, will probably depend, at least in part, on how well the domestic mass vaccination campaign proceeds. Over 1.7 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered so far.

这两次奔跑，跨越了89年丨Chinese sprinter makes history at Tokyo Games

In 1932, Liu Changchun, as the only representative of Chinese athletes, set off on his own to drift at sea for more than 20 days and traveled 10,000 miles to participate in the 10th Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He went there just to remind the world that China still stood as a country. 
1932年，刘长春作为中国运动员的唯一代表，独自漂泊了20多天，远赴万里参加在洛杉矶举行的第十届奥运会。他去那里只是为了告诉世界，中国仍然是一个国家。

Liu told Ta Kung Pao newspaper during an interview that "I, a Chinese athlete, go to the Olympics alone this time and traveled 10,000 miles. At this moment, despite the sufferings China has had to bear, may all of you rush bravely forward and may our descendants be relieved from such kind of suffering in the coming days!"

刘长春在接受《大公报》采访时说：“我中华健儿此次单刀赴会，万里关山，此刻国运艰难，愿诸君奋勇向前，愿来日我等后辈，远离这般苦难！”

Present day 2021, Sprinter Su Bingtian made history by becoming the first Chinese athlete to reach the Olympic 100m final. Su Bingtian said, "For me, through so many years of hard work, I can finally stand on the 100m (final) track. I think I have fulfilled not only the dream of mine, but also the dream of our predecessors!" 

今天的2021年，短跑运动员苏炳添成为首位闯入奥运会男子百米决赛的中国运动员，创造了历史。苏炳添说：“对我来说，通过这么多年的努力，终于可以站在奥运会100米决赛的跑道上，我完成了自己的梦想，也实现了中国田径历代前辈对我们的期待与祝福。”

Su ran into the record books at the Tokyo 2020 Games on Sunday when he became the first Chinese athlete to qualify for the men's 100-meter sprint final at an Olympics, setting a new Asian record on the way.
周日，苏炳添在东京2020年奥运会上创造了一项新的亚洲纪录，成为第一位在奥运会上获得男子100米短跑决赛资格的中国运动员。

Although Su finished sixth, he recorded a respectable time of 9.98 seconds, 0.18 seconds behind surprise winner Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy, who clocked 9.80 seconds.

尽管苏炳添获得了第六名，但他以9.98秒的成绩，仅落后来自意大利的奇才拉蒙特·马赛尔·雅各布斯9.80秒的成绩0.18秒。

Su stunned the athletics world when he ran his personal best of 9.83 seconds in his semifinal to qualify fastest for the final. The stunning time also made him the first Asian man to reach the men's 100m final at the Olympics in 89 years.

苏炳添在半决赛中以9.83秒的个人最佳成绩晋级决赛，震惊了整个体育界。这令人叹为观止的时长，也使他成为89年来第一位进入奥运会男子100米决赛的亚洲人。

Japan's Takayoshi Yoshioka was the last Asian to appear in the final, finishing last in the event at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

日本选手吉冈隆德是最后一个在决赛中亮相的亚洲人，在1932年洛杉矶奥运会的决赛中名列最后。

"Actually, I am very happy to run under 10 seconds twice in such a short time," Su said after the race.

“能够在这么短的比赛间隔里两次突破10秒，我觉得已经非常开心了，”赛后苏炳添说。

"Making it into the finals I have already given all I have."

Fred Kerley from the US took silver with a time of 9.84, while Canada's Andre de Grasse won bronze.
