After breaking an Olympic record to win gold in the 200-meter butterfly event, Zhang Yufei wrapped herself in a Chinese flag and beamed with joy as she finished with a dominant performance — almost two seconds ahead of Regan Smith from the United States, who took silver.

The Chinese women's volleyball team lost to the Russian Olympic Committee team 3-2 in their preliminary round, falling to the bottom of group B with a record of 0-3, along with Argentina.

Greater international cooperation on combating the COVID-19 pandemic is needed and less politicization of scientific issues, such as tracing the origin of the virus that causes the disease, according to Chinese scientists and scholars.

中国科学家和学者表示，要加强国际合作，共同抗击疫情。要减少科学问题的政治化，如病毒溯源。

Gao Fu, head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said investigating the origin  of the virus is a scientific question that should be answered scientifically.

中国疾病预防控制中心主任高福称，病毒溯源是个科学问题，应该科学地回答。

"Nobody should be blaming others. Probing the origin of the virus cannot be politicized," he said during the 23rd Annual Meeting of the China Association for Science and Technology, which started on Tuesday and ended on Wednesday.

高福在周二至周三举行的第二十三届中国科协年会上说到：“谁都不要甩锅，病毒溯源不能政治化。”

Gao said the pathogen may gain new properties by mutating and then breaching the body's immune system. Therefore, it is important to enhance international scientific cooperation based on openness, trust and collaboration, he added.

Wang Hongyang, a noted oncologist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said the current public health challenges are unprecedented. "We are all in this together, and only through international cooperation can we ensure global public health security."

China has also taken concrete actions to improve global public health in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, including monetary donations to the World Health Organization and providing vaccines and aid to other countries.

Xue Lan, dean of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, said that after the end of the Cold War, international cooperation on science and technology rapidly expanded, but in recent years, political issues between major countries have undermined this momentum.

清华大学苏世民学院院长薛澜说，冷战结束后，国际科技合作迅速扩大，但近年来，主要国家之间的政治问题破坏了这一势头。

"All of humanity has benefited from global cooperation in science and technology," Xue said.

From 2013 until the COVID-19 outbreak in December 2019, Japan invited over 10,000 Chinese students and researchers to the country for exchange programs, Okimura said. However, the pandemic has put the program on hold for over 18 months.

The result was widely anticipated despite the duo's relative lack of experience in competition at the international level; Chen is 15 and Zhang 17.

As Xie told Sherman, the Chinese people feel that the real emphasis is on the confrontational aspect, the collaborative aspect is just an expediency and the competitive aspect is a narrative trap.

When the Biden administration needs China, it demands cooperation, and when it comes to the fields where the US is superior to China, it calls for decoupling and sanctions. And in the areas where the US wants to contain China, it leaves no stones unturned in trying to do so — ranging from interfering in China's internal affairs and long-arm jurisdiction to smearing and bullying — irrespective of the consequences.

In the face of the US' coercion, China's countermeasures are legal, rational and necessary to defend its sovereignty and core interests. If the US continues to pursue its current China policy, the most important bilateral relations in the world will descend unrecoverably into a vortex.Before Washington adopts a new direction for its diplomacy that encompasses common ground, there is no foundation on which to erect guardrails.

面对美国的施压，中国为维护主权和核心利益，采取适当的反制措施是合法的、理性的、也是必要的。如果美国继续奉行现行对华政策，世界上最重要的双边关系将不可避免地陷入漩涡。在美方改变外交方向并提供共同立场之前，双边关系就没有设立“护栏”的基础。

Sherman will not return home empty-handed as Xie gave her a list of actions that the US should stop and a list of individual cases that China is concerned about to help the US find a solid foothold on which to move relations forward.

The Chinese duo were tied with the United States pair after their second dive. The US dropped out of contention and China led the five rounds before taking the gold with an inward two-and-a-half somersaults pike dive that carries a high degree of difficulty of 3.0.

Measures to support third-child policy

China will establish a comprehensive support system by 2025 that helps to "significantly reduce" burdens on couples related to child-rearing and education in a set of policy tools to boost the number of newborns, the central authorities said on Tuesday.

These efforts will see birthrates improve to some degree with fast-paced investment in pregnancy and day care services and related facilities during the period, according to a document issued on Tuesday that sets out a decision made by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council on June 26.
