He said the CPC will actively promote global governance to make new contributions to mankind in dealing with common challenges.

Xi underscored the need to uphold multilateralism, saying international rules should be recognized by all countries, not formulated by a small number of individuals. International cooperation should be for the purpose of serving the whole of mankind, instead of using group politics to seek world hegemony, he added.

Xi called on the world's political parties to strengthen international cooperation to cope with the global risks and challenges.

Facing a COVID-19 pandemic that is still surging globally, countries should intensify solidarity and cooperation to narrow the vaccine gap, oppose politicizing the disease and jointly advance the building of a global community of health for all, he said.

Xi underlined the need for countries to improve governance in order to raise their capacity for enhancing people's well-being.

People of all countries have the right to choose their own development path and institutional model, he said, and there are various ways of realizing democracy. Whether a country is democratic or not should be judged by its own people, not by a small minority of individuals, he added.

Xi also called on the world's political parties to build up consensus for upholding the common value of humanity in promoting peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom. The parties were also urged to promote international coordination and cooperation and to advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Noting that the CPC remains true to its founding aspiration and mission for people's happiness, Xi said it has also been striving to promote peace and development.

China has worked to be a promoter of world peace, contributor of global development and champion of international order, he added.

Xi said that the country will firmly pursue the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics to develop itself and at the same time benefit the world. A country's efforts to independently explore a path that suits its national conditions to achieve modernization should be respected, he added.

The CPC will unite and lead the Chinese people to comprehensively deepen reform and expand opening-up and make new contributions to the common development and prosperity of all countries, Xi noted.

Saying that the trend for opening-up and cooperation remains unchanged, Xi pointed out that the CPC stands ready to strengthen communication with the world's political parties to guide economic globalization to become more open, inclusive, mutually beneficial and balanced toward greater win-win results.

China is willing to intensify high-quality cooperation with the international community on joint construction of the Belt and Road, promote global mutual connectivity and enable more countries and their people to enjoy the development results, he said.

The summit, on the theme of "For the People's Well-Being: The Responsibility of Political Parties", is an important multilateral diplomatic event held at a time when the CPC is marking the 100th anniversary of its founding. More than 500 leaders of political parties and organizations from more than 160 countries, as well as over 10,000 party representatives participated in the event.

President Xi Jinping has called on China and the European Union to expand consensus and cooperation and rationally deal with their disputes in a world that more than ever needs cooperation instead of a zero-sum game mentality.

He made the remark in Beijing on Monday while participating in a video summit with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It followed a similar summit with the leaders in April.

Guided by the principles of mutual respect and seeking common ground while shelving differences, China and the EU have expanded the convergence of interests through their strategic partnership, Xi said, calling on the two sides to maintain a steady course on bilateral relations.

He said that China is willing to facilitate the flow of people with France, Germany and other European countries while ensuring control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xi said that China stands ready to work with the EU to hold the 23rd China-EU leaders' meeting at an early date, start preparations for high-level dialogues in a number of areas, and promote the mutual recognition and protection of trusted products, which will bring more benefits to the daily lives of people on both sides.

Since the bilateral agreement between China and the European Union on geographical indications took effect in March, a total of 134 EU products are protected in China and 110 Chinese products are protected in the EU, he noted.

As China keeps on opening up, Xi said, it hopes that the EU will provide a fair, transparent and nondiscriminatory business environment for Chinese companies in accordance with market principles.

The president underlined the importance of upholding true multilateralism, saying that international affairs should be calmly addressed by all parties through negotiations.

What China wants most is its own development instead of replacing others, Xi said, noting that the Belt and Road Initiative was aimed at creating more opportunities for shared development.

China hopes that the EU will play a more positive role in international affairs, demonstrate its strategic autonomy and jointly safeguard world peace, stability and development, he said.

During the meeting, Xi also said China actively supported Africa to improve its capacity to manufacture vaccines.

According to Xi, China has signed debt suspension agreements, or reached similar understandings, with 19 African countries.

He also called on the EU to provide more vaccines for African countries in urgent need, and assist Africa in dealing with its debt pressure to help the continent realize economic recovery and low-carbon development at an early date.

Macron said France is committed to pushing ahead cooperation with China with a pragmatic attitude. France also supports the signing of the EU-China investment deal and welcomes more Chinese companies to invest in the country, he said.

The French side stands ready to communicate with China on issues including the reform of the World Trade Organization and dealing with climate change, he added.

Macron said his country praised China's important role in providing equitable access for developing countries to vaccines.

Merkel congratulated China on overcoming the impact of the pandemic and resuming its economic development.

Noting that the EU-China relationship is of crucial importance, she said that the two sides have reached consensus in many areas. Both sides should respect each other and narrow their divisions by strengthening dialogue, she added.

Two Chinese astronauts flew out of the core module of China's permanent space station on Sunday morning to carry out the country's first extravehicular activity, commonly known as spacewalk, in 13 years.
UP to 11:02 am, Major General Liu Boming and Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo floated out of the module, named Tianhe, or Harmony of Heavens.

Wearing the nation's new-generation extravehicular suit, the pair is tasked with using a large robotic arm to conduct several operations including installing equipment outside the spacecraft and moving the panoramic camera, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

At a meeting with reporters at the Jiuquan center one day ahead of their space journey, Liu said that compared with the extravehicular operation in the Shenzhou VII mission, spacewalks in the Shenzhou XII will be much longer and more sophisticated.

While reviewing the CPC's century-old history and its significant role in rallying and leading the Chinese people to secure victories in revolution, construction and reform, he stressed the Party's commitment to achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Resolving the Taiwan question to realize China's complete reunification is a historic mission and an unshakable commitment of the Party as well as the shared aspiration of all the Chinese people, Xi said, adding that resolute actions must be taken to defeat any attempt at "Taiwan independence", and to create a bright future for national rejuvenation.

"No one should underestimate the resolve, the will, and the ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.

Xi called on the whole Party to take history as a mirror, stay true to the Party's founding aspirations and mission and uphold the people-centered philosophy to create a brighter future in the new era.

Calling the people "true heroes, for it is they who create history", he said that the people are all that matters.

The CPC has always represented the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people, Xi said, and any attempt to divide the Party from the people or to set the people against the Party is bound to fail.

"The more than 95 million Party members and the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people will never allow such a scenario to come to pass."

He underlined the need to wholeheartedly serve the people, stick to the people-centered development philosophy, promote people's democracy and uphold social fairness and justice.

Priority should be given to addressing imbalances and inadequacies in development as well as the most pressing difficulties and problems that are of great concern to the people, Xi said, adding that efforts should be made to achieve notable and substantial progress in promoting well-rounded human development and common prosperity for all.

He stressed the importance of continuing to adapt Marxism to the Chinese context as well as upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. "At the fundamental level, the capability of our Party and the strengths of socialism with Chinese characteristics are attributable to the fact that Marxism works."

Noting that the nation stands ready to learn from the achievements of other cultures and also welcomes helpful suggestions and constructive criticism, Xi said, "We will not, however, accept sanctimonious preaching from those who feel they have the right to lecture us."

"We will make sure the destiny of China's development and progress remains firmly in our own hands," he added.

Xi underscored upholding the Party's overall leadership, saying that China's success hinges on the Party. "The Party was chosen by history and the people. The leadership of the Party is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics and constitutes the greatest strength of this system."

In terms of the nation's development on the new journey ahead, Xi emphasized the need to deepen reform and opening-up across the board, fully and faithfully implement the new development philosophy, foster a new development paradigm, promote high-quality growth and build up the country's strength in science and technology.

He also warned against challenges and risks facing the Party, particularly due to complex changes in the international landscape, and called for efforts to coordinate development and security imperatives.

Saying that the characteristic that distinguishes the CPC from other political parties is its courage to reform itself, Xi called for continuing to strengthen Party building.

"We must tighten the Party's organizational system, work hard to train high-caliber officials who have both moral integrity and professional competence, remain committed to improving Party conduct, upholding integrity, and combating corruption, and root out any elements that would harm the Party's advanced nature and purity and any viruses that would erode its health," Xi said.

In a grand ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People, Xi hailed the 29 recipients of the July 1 Medal, some posthumously, as outstanding representatives of CPC members on all fronts.

This is the first time the medal was awarded, as the CPC is set to celebrate its centenary on Thursday.

In his speech, Xi briefly recalled the Party's history over the past century, during which he said the CPC led the people to blaze a great path, established a great cause, forged a great spirit and accumulated precious experience.

Over the past 100 years, generations of CPC members have worked hard and made selfless contributions in the pursuit of national independence and the liberation of the people, as well as in striving for a prosperous and strong country and the people's well-being, he said.

To maintain staunch faith is to stay true to the Party's original aspiration and dedicate everything, even one's precious life, to the cause of the Party and the people, said Xi.
Xi urged all Party members to regard their faith in Marxism and their belief in socialism with Chinese characteristics as their lifelong pursuit.

Xi noted that the recipients of the July 1 Medal are everyday people who are heroes. They come from the people and are deeply rooted in the people, he said, adding that they are humble, unassuming and dedicated people.

He called on Party members to learn from the deeds and the spirit of the medal recipients.

Through their actions they have proved that every Party member can make accomplishments in the great cause of national rejuvenation as long as they have firm ideals and beliefs, resolute willpower and steadfast perseverance, he added.

"This is a new era that calls for heroes and will surely give rise to heroes. If the Communist Party of China always wants to be the vanguard of the era and the backbone of the nation, its members must be held to the highest standards," Xi said.

He highlighted the need to encourage Party members to always remember the Party's character and fundamental purpose and its original inspirations and mission and to fight without complacency and enduringly.

Zhang Guimei, a recipient of the medal and the founder of a high school that offers free education for girls in a less-developed area in Yunnan province, said at the ceremony that the medal was a great encouragement to her.

"What we did was merely what many CPC members are doing every day, and yet the Party and the people have given us such a great honor," she said, adding that she will continue to devote herself to the cause of education.

Before the award ceremony, Xi and other leaders met recipients of the titles of outstanding Party members, exemplary Party workers and model community-level Party organizations from across the country, and had a group photo taken with them.

The meeting to award these titles was held on Monday and was attended by Wang Huning and Zhao Leji, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

Members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji and Han Zheng, as well as Vice-President Wang Qishan, were also among Party and State leaders who watched the gala at National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.

Shortly before 8 pm, Xi and other senior leaders walked into the stadium amid warm applause throughout the venue.

Along with music and songs, fireworks displaying "100" lit up the night sky over the stadium. A shining Party emblem was shown on the stage, kicking off the grand gala event.

Called The Great Journey, the four-part gala performance was presented in the style of a large-scale theater production. Through music and dance, stage plays, marching, dramas and documentary video, the performance vividly presented the CPC's 100-year endeavor in leading the people in pursuing revolution, construction and reform.

It celebrated China's historic achievements as well as the transformations that have taken place under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Xi at its core since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012. The event also highlighted the promising future of fully realizing a modern socialist country.

Part one displayed the great struggle and painstaking efforts that the Chinese people, under the leadership of the CPC, made to achieve victories in the revolutionary period, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the War of Liberation (1946-49) before the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Part two reflected on the heroes and role models in the period of socialist revolution and construction as well as the Chinese People's Volunteer Army entering the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to help in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53).

Part three showed the great achievements China has made since the CPC adopted the reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s, including Hong Kong's and Macao's return to the motherland and the Chinese people's solidarity to win the battle against the SARS epidemic in 2003.

Part four showed how socialism with Chinese characteristics entered the new era under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, particularly the country's achievements in elimination of absolute poverty, its people's war against the COVID-19 pandemic, and its strong commitment to advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The gala came to a climax with fireworks lighting up the sky again amid applause and cheers.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has called for using the Party's history of struggle, its great achievements, glorious tradition and fine work style as the sources of the spiritual driving force for all Party members to make new achievements in the new era.

Xi made the remark on Friday as he presided over a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, ahead of the July 1 centenary of the CPC's founding.

As part of the study session, Xi led the Political Bureau members on a visit to the "Red Building" in Beijing, once the main campus of Peking University, where an exhibition was held in commemoration of the history of how the CPC was founded. It was in the four-story red brick building that China's advanced youth, including Mao Zedong, developed the Marxist ideas that paved the way for the establishment of the CPC.

Xi also led a visit to a former residence of Mao in the Zhongnanhai leadership compound. The late chairman worked and lived there for 17 years from 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded.

The two sites are of landmark significance in the Party's history, and they have vividly explained how the CPC and the PRC developed, Xi said during the visit.

He stressed that sites and heritage related to the CPC's history are scattered all over China, representing the Party's glorious history and great achievements and its pursuits, sentiments, responsibilities, sacrifices and dedication.

Xi said that since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, he has visited almost all major sacred revolutionary sites and memorials related to revolutionary history during his inspection tours nationwide.

He urged efforts to safeguard the country established by the revolutionary martyrs and develop it well, calling for new achievements that can live up to the expectations of the revolutionary forefathers, stand the test of time and are worthy of the people.

He underlined the importance of Marxism in guiding the Party in its centennial development, saying the reason why the CPC can get things done and why socialism with Chinese characteristics is so good is fundamentally because Marxism really works.

The wide spread of Marxism in China gave birth to the CPC, and it provided the Party with a scientific worldview and methodology, as well as a powerful ideological weapon to understand and transform the world, he said, urging efforts to educate the whole Party to consistently follow the guidance offered by the scientific theories.

Xi called on all Party members and officials to firm up their ideals and beliefs and overcome difficulties to secure new victories on the new journey of fully building a modern socialist country.

He required all CPC members to stay committed to the Party's original aspiration and founding mission and to uphold the people-centered development philosophy, noting that for the Party, which has governed a country for a long time, nothing is more dangerous than deviating from its original aspiration and becoming out of touch with the people.

Currently, China is in a crucial period of realizing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and the revolutionary spirit must not be abandoned, Xi said, nor can the Party give up modesty, prudence, and its other traditions such as working hard, showing diligence and thrift, and guarding against arrogance and impetuosity.

The Party must maintain its courage, fearing no enemies or risks and daring to fight and win, he added.

Xi demanded the Party to stick to self-reform, which provides strong support for the Party's governance capacity. He urged efforts to advance the full and strict governance over the Party.

Xi also called for sound protection, management and utilization of sites and heritage related to the CPC's history. Historical nihilism should be opposed and resisted, he said.
He said the sites and heritage should be used to guide young people to foster ideals that carry forward the revolutionary traditions.
