Although China has made constant efforts to inform the world about its human rights developments, some Western countries choose to ignore the facts and use attacks on the nation's human rights issues as a political tool to curb the country's development, human rights experts said.
Over the past century, the Communist Party of China has invested a huge amount of effort in human rights protection, contributing significantly to global progress in the area, according to a white paper on the practices of the CPC in respecting and protecting human rights released by the State Council Information Office on Thursday.
Despite the progress made in improving Chinese people's economic, social and cultural rights as well as their civil and political rights and the right of religious beliefs, some Western countries still turn a blind eye to the facts and make ungrounded accusations, Lu Guangjin, secretary-general of the China Society for Human Rights Studies, said on Thursday.
These countries don't actually care about Chinese people's rights and use them as an excuse to interfere in China's internal affairs and prevent it from growing stronger, Lu said. "Such moves clearly have a political agenda rather than being the result of simple misunderstandings," he said.
On accusations by some Western politicians on human rights issues in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Lu said, "If they really care about the human rights of people in Xinjiang, why didn't they condemn the violent acts when terrorist attacks occurred in the region?"
Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in late 2012, the Party has attached greater importance to improving the systems and mechanisms for respecting and protecting human rights. The principle that "human rights should be fully respected and protected" was included in the report to the congress.
China has been continuously communicating its views on human rights protection to the world, said He Zhipeng, executive director of Jilin University's Human Rights Research Institute. "We have answered questions from many foreign organizations and governments on the country's human rights issues, so the international community can learn about key actions taken by China in the sector," He said.
China has signed 26 international human rights instruments, including six core United Nations conventions. The country has had constructive talks with relevant treaty bodies and adopted their suggestions in accordance with the actual conditions in China, according to the white paper.
The country has also undertaken three cycles of the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review process since 2009, with its reports being adopted, and it has given due attention and responsible feedback to all suggestions from other countries. Most countries have affirmed China's achievements in this regard and its contribution to international human rights, the paper said.
Many proposals raised by China, such as the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, actually are closely related to improving the human rights of people around the world in different aspects, including their rights to employment, basic living, social security, health, education, culture, environment and property that are essential to the rights of all to life and development, He said.
Floating breakfasts are a popular amenity at Koh Samui's Cape Fahn Hotel. Courtesy of Cape Fahn
If you follow luxury resorts or travel influencers on Instagram, odds are good that you've seen at least one "floating breakfast."
They're your typical upscale hotel room service breakfast -- think toast, fruit, coffee and the like -- served in a pool or hot tub instead of in bed. Usually, they're placed on large platters or colorful baskets, then accessorized with bright tropical flowers to make them even more photogenic.
While these breakfasts have become more common on resort menus over the last five years, the coronavirus pandemic has made them more popular than ever as hotel guests are avoiding buffets and communal dining rooms.
The floating breakfast has quickly become yet another luxury hotel amenity, like afternoon tea or a turndown treat. Amid the pandemic, domestic travelers taking advantage of affordablestaycationshave also embraced floating breakfasts.
"We can definitely see that the Asian market is way more into having Instagrammable moments to capture than other markets," he says.
And due to its growing presence, resorts have to keepupping the ante in order to make their offering stand out.
up the ante:加高要求
The Six Senses Uluwatu in Bali serves theirs in a red heart-shaped basket. The Anantara in Koh Phangan, Thailand, has a floating "sunset sushi" extravaganza. Cape Fahn is working on a floating afternoon tea experience.
来自悉尼的DMarge网站记者詹姆斯·布思告诉美国有线电视新闻网旅游频道说,对他而言,这道豪华大餐吃起来没有想象中那么美妙(for him, the lush meal worked better in concept than in execution)。
"I realized that because it was a humid environment, leaving your breakfast out was maybe not ideal," he says.
"The coffee had a bit of pool water in it, and the bread was soggy." he confesses.

President Xi Jinping encouraged the astronauts on board the core module of China's space station to work closely to accomplish their tasks, as he spoke with the crew members on Wednesday morning via video link.

Speaking from the Beijing Aerospace Control Center in a northwestern suburb of the capital, Xi said it was a delight to see that the three astronauts on board the module-Major General Nie Haisheng as mission commander, Major General Liu Boming and Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo-were in good condition and the work was progressing well.
The president, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, extended greetings on behalf of the top authorities and the Chinese people. "We all care about you very much," Xi said.
"The construction of the space station is a milestone in China's space industry, which will make pioneering contributions to the peaceful use of space by humanity," the president told the astronauts. "You are the representatives of those who are striving and climbing in China's space industry in the new era. I hope you will work closely with each other and complete the upcoming tasks."
Xi added: "We wish you a successful mission and a comfortable journey. We will wait for your triumphant return to Beijing."
Nie, noting that this is his third space mission, told Xi that "the conditions are getting better and better" and Chinese astronauts now have "a permanent home operating in orbit".
"We, in distant space, are very proud of our great Party and motherland," the veteran astronaut said. "We will follow your instructions and honor our duties and commitments."
Liu, who is on his second space trip, said it is a great honor and responsibility to participate in this significant mission.
"Later, we will carry out a series of technological verification experiments, including two extravehicular activities and robotic arm operations. We will carry out the operations carefully to ensure the success of all tests," he added.
Tang, who is making his first spaceflight, told Xi that he has adapted to the weightless environment in space. "I eat, live and work well, and I can make video calls with my family. Our home in space is very cozy and comfortable, and we have full confidence in completing the upcoming tasks," he added.
Before the televised conversation, Xi and a host of high-ranking officials watched livestreams of Nie practicing operating a mechanical arm and Liu and Tang assembling a spacesuit designed for extravehicular activity.
A Chinese national flag and a Party flag are tied to the walls of the core module, which is named Tianhe, or Harmony of Heavens.
Pang Zhihao, a spaceflight researcher in Beijing with knowledge of China's manned space program, said the call took place as Tianhe flew over China as the result of careful arrangement to ensure the smooth transmission of video signals between the Beijing center and the module.
"There was a double-insurance mechanism that involved a relay satellite network and ground-based tracking stations, which was intended to make sure the signal transmission would be stable and reliable," he said.
"Actually, our Tianlian-series relay satellites alone are capable of realizing such a ground-spacecraft video call."
The country now operates a space-based relay network consisting of four Tianlian satellites in geostationary orbit that are able to transmit signals between spacecraft and anywhere in the world, Pang said.
The three astronauts entered Tianhe on June 17 after their Shenzhou XII spacecraft docked with the module earlier in the day, becoming the first occupants of the module, the first and central component of the Chinese station, which is called Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace. They are scheduled to stay there for three months for a wide variety of tasks.
Their spaceship was launched on a Long March 2F carrier rocket that blasted off on June 17 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China.
Shenzhou XII, the nation's seventh manned space mission, is part of the Tiangong station program, which aims to complete a three-component station in a low-Earth orbit about 400 kilometers above the ground before the end of 2022.
In the near future, three manned missions and three robotic cargo flights will be conducted for the station's construction. Two large space labs will also be lifted to link up with the station.

President Xi Jinping has encouraged overseas students at Peking University to garner a deeper understanding of China as it is, calling on them to share their thoughts and experiences with more people and to proactively promote exchanges between peoples of different nations.
Xi's remarks came as he wrote back on Monday to 45 representatives of overseas students from 32 countries who are studying at Peking University.
"One must understand the Communist Party of China before understanding today's China," wrote Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
He noted that the students have taken the initiative to learn about China and the history of the CPC, which is highly beneficial for them to know China's past, present and future.
"You mentioned that the CPC has committed itself to developing the economy, eradicating poverty and actively assisting other countries in fighting COVID-19," said Xi. "The CPC is committed to these endeavors because it is a political party that strives for both the wellbeing of the Chinese people and human progress."
"Seeing is believing," the president said as he extended a message to the students to visit more parts of China.
The reply letter from Xi has drawn a warm response from the overseas students at the university, many of whom said it gave them a great boost.
Sovath Kenh, a PhD candidate in economics from Cambodia, said he and his fellow students started planning the letter in March.
He said they wanted to share what they have seen and heard since coming to China, including their knowledge about the CPC's extraordinary efforts in various aspects, such as economic growth, poverty alleviation, the pandemic fight and international cooperation.
"We hoped that we could condense thousands of words into the letter to thank the CPC for its contribution to Chinese residents, the world and the community with a shared future for mankind," he said.
"The reply letter made each of our overseas students feel profoundly honored and warm," he added.
Alexandra Pozhidaeva, a Russian student in the School of Journalism and Communication, said she was willing to use her knowledge to answer the call from Xi and to tell China's stories and make the nation's voices heard.
Anzelika Smirnova, a PhD candidate from Latvia, said she was very excited to hear about the reply letter from Xi.
She said it fully showcased the care shown by the Chinese leadership and the expectations it has for young people from different nations.
"We learned a lot at the university and in China. We will do what President Xi expects us to do to step up exchanges and mutual learning so that we can tell true stories about China to more people," she added.
Thomas Donglona Adawa, a PhD candidate from Chad at the School of International Studies, said his learning experience in China offered an "excellent window" to know about the CPC and enabled him to better learn about the country's development.
"It was a great honor for me to have pursued my degree here in China and to have witnessed China's quick growth in person. I will bring back what I have seen, learned and thought about to my motherland and help with the progress of society," he said.

The Age of Awakening, based on events from 1915 to 1921-a critical period in the birth of the Party-is among film and TV productions celebrating the Party's 100th birthday.
The TV drama has remained a hot topic on social media since being aired in February. A recent item about it on the microblogging service Sina Weibo has been read more than 1.17 billion times, and the discussions related to it show that it has had a positive effect in educating young audiences.
Many netizens said they have been browsing through historical information while watching the series, in order to learn more about the founders of the Party.
One wrote: "The characters in history textbooks came to life," while another said, "The sequel to the series is our life today."
More than 70 percent of the TV drama's audience is younger than 35, according to data analyzer Guduo Media. Video platform Youku's data show that among the viewers who left "screen bullets", real-time comments that appear on the screen, the proportion of those born in the 1990s was 1.6 times higher than the average.
Long Pingping, the series' scriptwriter and former deputy secretary-general of the Party Literature Research Center of the CPC Central Committee, said he was moved and grateful that so many young people like the series after he won a best original screenplay award this month.
"I wrote it to let the younger generation know how the awakening, struggle and sacrifice of revolutionary figures 100 years ago relates to our life today," Long said.
This year, various forms of disseminating the Party's history have emerged nationwide, and these have become popular with the younger generation. Rather than being confined to textbooks and classrooms, such new forms have encouraged students to learn enthusiastically and voluntarily.
Weng Tiehui, vice-minister of education, said, "Telling stories that young people love to see and hear is the key to passing on the spirit of the revolutionary martyrs."
Recently, a rap song called 1921, the year the CPC was founded, circulated among students at Hunan Agricultural University. Its catchy lyrics, coupled with a dynamic beat, tell the history of the founding of the Party and the meaning behind it.
It was one of a series of rap songs composed this year by Chang Lai, a teacher at the university, telling stories about the history of the Party in the form of music, in order to help students better understand it. Chang raps with students and explains the stories behind the lyrics.
"Rap is a popular form of music among college students, so I have been trying to integrate it with education," he said in a video interview. "I hope they can understand the knowledge and spirit behind each lyric and learn how to pass it on."
Li Liyang, a graduate student at Shanghai University, said he felt that education related to Party history had become more accessible to young people.
"More content has been put on the internet on different platforms, such as livestreaming and videosharing websites, and these use lively language," he said. "It makes it easier for us to relate to the past."
The 30-episode cartoon series Blood and Fire: How New China Was Forged is being broadcast daily from June 1 to July 1 on popular video-sharing website Bilibili. It features historical stories from the founding of the Party in 1921 to the founding of New China in 1949.
Chen Rui, CEO of the website, said young people were attracted by their common interest in animation, cartoons and games, and they have gradually developed their own forms of expression for their love for the country.

Humankind's presence in outer space has tremendously increased, thanks to the deployment of three Chinese astronauts to China's space station, said a French astronaut.
"The population of humans in space grew by 43 percent this week, with China launching three astronauts to their space station," Thomas Pesquet, a European Space Agency astronaut now on board the International Space Station, wrote on his Twitter account on Friday. "All spaceflight is an incredible achievement. I imagine the trio enjoying the view of their capital city Beijing and Tianjin from Earth orbit."

Pesquet also published several photos of night views of Beijing and its neighboring municipality of Tianjin taken from the International Space Station, writing in another post in French that he hopes his Chinese peers will have the opportunity to personally see the Chinese cities like he did.
Three crew members of the Shenzhou XII mission-Major General Nie Haisheng, Major General Liu Boming and Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo-entered the Chinese space station's core module, named Tianhe, or Harmony of Heavens, on Thursday afternoon after their Shenzhou XII spacecraft docked with the module earlier that day.
The spaceship was launched by a Long March 2F carrier rocket that blasted off on Thursday morning from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, embarking on the nation's seventh manned spaceflight, which will last three months.
The crew members are the first occupants of the Tianhe module, the first and central component of the Chinese station, called Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace.
The Tiangong program, the latest symbol of China's grand space aspirations, aims to complete a three-section space station in a low-Earth orbit, about 400 kilometers above the ground, before the end of 2022.
Roscosmos, Russia's state space corporation, sent "sincere congratulations" to China on Thursday for the Shenzhou XII manned mission's launch to the Tianhe module.
"China has made another confident step forward," Roscosmos said, adding that Russia and China will become "lasting and reliable partners" in long-term exploration of space.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson extended his congratulations to China on the latest mission. "I look forward to the scientific discoveries to come," he wrote in a statement Thursday on the US agency's website.
The European Space Agency and Brazilian Space Agency have also extended congratulations to Chinese space authorities for the Shenzhou XII mission to the Tianhe module.
The Brazilian organization said, "We wish China many achievements in this challenging space initiative."
The Chinese crew's planned three-month stay will offer scientists more insights into the living, work and health conditions of an astronaut in microgravity, which in turn "will be useful for future moon missions or Mars missions or further afield", Paul Francis, an astrophysicist at the Australian National University, told Xinhua News Agency on Thursday.

The baby elephant was so small that it didn't yet know how to swim, but it didn't hesitate to join others from its roaming herd in Yunnan province when they walked into a fishpond.
▲ A herd of wild elephants feeds on crops in a field in Yimen county, Yuxi, Yunnan province, on Wednesday. Yuxi Public Security Bureau
They succeeded, but most of the fish in the pond died, resulting in a loss to the fishpond's owner of about 5,000 yuan ($775).
The herd's damage to the village of Dazhai in the city of Pu'er, Yunnan province, went far beyond that amount, said Ding Chunlin, head of the village committee.
"During the 19 days they stayed in our village, they also caused crop failures on about 30 hectares of farmland," Ding said.
As the herd wreaked havoc in the village, which spans almost 75 square kilometers, there was no need for villagers to worry about the losses caused by the animals.
As monitors closely watched the herd to ensure people's safety, employees with an insurance company began assessing villagers' losses soon after they arrived in the mountain-ringed village on Aug 19, Ding recalled.
About 20 days after the herd left, a total of 210,000 yuan in compensation was transferred to villagers' bank accounts, he said.
"Villagers who suffered losses need not do anything but provide their ID and bank account numbers," Ding said.
As the herd continues roaming far from its traditional habitat after leaving Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve last year, Dazhai provides one example of how Yunnan authorities are dealing with losses caused by the animals.
According to the Yunnan provincial forestry and grassland administration, the province took the lead in the country in 2010 with a pilot insurance program that compensates for damage caused by wild animals. Using only public funds, the insurance program covered the entire province by 2014.
Since 2011, a total of 94.5 million yuan has been provided to compensate for damage caused by elephants in Pu'er, said Zhou Zhitao, an official with Pu'er's forestry and grassland department.
Yang Hua, an official at the Yunnan provincial forestry and grassland administration, said that to date, a total of 297 million yuan in compensation has been provided in more than 130,000 cases across the province. He did not disclose how much of that was compensation for damage caused by wild elephants.
Listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, Asian elephants are under first-class State protection in China. Thanks to joint protection efforts, the number of wild Asian elephants has reached about 300, up from around 170 in the 1970s.
The roaming herd continues to cause damage around the city of Yuxi, Yunnan.
More recent data was not available, but a previous media release from the Yuxi government said the herd damaged over 56 hectares of crops in the city between April 16 and May 27.
It cited a preliminary estimate that the direct economic losses caused during that time by the herd reached about 6.8 million yuan.
"All people who suffer damage will be compensated once the work is completed," he said.

General Xu Qiliang, a vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the Chinese military, along with other senior officials watched the mission's launch at the Jiuquan center.
Shenzhou XII, which is carrying three astronauts – Major General Nie Haisheng, Major General Liu Boming and Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo, is set to rendezvous and then dock with the core module, named Tianhe, or Harmony of Heavens, in a matter of hours. Then the crew will float into the module and start their three-month mission inside the craft, the first, and central, section of China's space station, named Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace.
The all-male crew is tasked with testing and verifying plans, technologies and equipment for crucial elements in the Tiangong station's construction and operation, such as astronauts' long-term mission arrangements, life-support system, in-orbit resupply, extravehicular activity as well as spacecraft maintenance and repair.
They are also assigned with carrying out other space tasks and experiments in Tianhe.
During this mission, astronauts are scheduled to conduct two extravehicular operations, popularly known as spacewalks, to use mechanical arms to install equipment and check Tianhe's external condition.
Their work will enable the China Manned Space Agency to accumulate experience and check the capability, performance and compatibility of systems involved in the space station program to prepare for the next steps in its construction, said Ji Qiming, the agency's assistant director.
Tianhe was lifted by a Long March 5B heavy-lift rocket at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province on April 29.

The biggest and heaviest spacecraft China has ever constructed, Tianhe is 16.6-meter-long and has a diameter of 4.2 meters. The craft's weight, at 22.5 tons, is equal to the combined weight of 15 standard-size automobiles. It has three parts-a connecting section, a life-support and control section, and a resources section.
The module will be central to the Tiangong station's operations, given that astronauts will live there and control the entire station from inside. It will also be used to host scientific and technological experiments.
The craft is now connected with the Tianzhou 2 robotic cargo ship that was launched by a Long March 7 rocket from the Wenchang facility on May 29. The two crafts docked with each other the next day.
Tianzhou 2 is now containing packages of living materials and mission payloads for Nie and his crew members to use, and propellants that will be used to refuel the core module.
Based on project plans, the Tianzhou 3 cargo ship will be launched in September to dock with Tianhe and the next month, another three-crew team will fly with the Shenzhou XIII to the module to stay there for six months.
In 2022, two large space labs will be launched to connect with the core module. Moreover, two manned missions and two robotic cargo flights will be made that year to continue construction of the Tiangong station, which is scheduled to become complete and start formal operation around the end of 2022.
One of China's most adventurous space endeavors, Tiangong will consist of three main components -- a core module attached to two space labs -- with a combined weight of nearly 70 metric tons. The entire station is set to work for about 15 years.
Upon its completion, Tiangong will be manned regularly by groups of three astronauts in periods lasting several months. During handovers to new three-astronaut groups, the station will accommodate up to six astronauts.

The attitude and tolerance exhibited by the Chinese people toward the 15 elephants that have been wandering through Yunnan province is not only fascinating, but offers key lessons for Africa, according to one of the world's leading experts on the animals.

Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the founder of Save the Elephants, a Kenyan-based charity working around the world to protect elephants, said Africa has experienced numerous conflicts between humans and elephants when compared with China. However, the continent can draw lessons from the positive attitude shown by the Chinese people toward the elephants that have trekked more than 500 kilometers from their home in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve since last year.
Douglas-Hamilton said the Chinese have strictly adhered to authorities' instructions to treat the wild animals with respect, avoid getting too close to or teasing them, and not hurt them or forcefully drive them away.
The Chinese public has a humane approach despite the herd causing more than $1 million damage to crops. In contrast, Africa has recorded several cases of communities retaliating for the loss of livestock or crops by trying to kill the offending animals.
According to the Mara Elephant Project, an organization focused on elephant protection in Kenya's Maasai Mara wildlife reserve, human-elephant conflicts in Africa rose from 84 incidents in 2016 to 181 in 2019.
In addition to the reaction toward the elephants, Douglas-Hamilton said their movements are also fascinating.
"It's interesting that the elephants are returning to the direction of their ancestral grounds where they used to live 1,500 years ago," he said.
The scientist said that over the last 5,000 years, elephants ranged far and wide in China and gradually, as human populations increased, they settled in the area of the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
The herd is lingering in Shijie township in the city of Yuxi, and a male elephant that recently strayed from the group was about 17.4 kilometers away from the herd, Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday. All 15 elephants are safe and sound, according to the headquarters in charge of monitoring their migration.
Douglas-Hamilton said China has placed high value on its elephants, and he applauded the country's concept of ecological civilization that considers nature to be part of life, rather than something that can be exploited without restraint.
And while China has managed human-wildlife conflicts remarkably well, Douglas-Hamilton said the increasing number of Chinese tourists visiting Africa's national parks and game reserves is an indication that there are lessons that China can learn from the continent.
China's ban on the domestic trade of ivory products introduced at the end of 2017 is also laudable and is a reflection of the country's change of attitude on the protection of African elephants. Douglas-Hamilton said the elephant situation in Kenya has improved over the past five years, adding that Kenya was losing elephants faster than they could reproduce a decade ago.
"China's attitude is largely part of the improvement," he said, adding that China is also collaborating with many international conservation agencies to try to stop illegal trafficking of ivory.
To successfully conserve wildlife in Africa, where the human-wildlife conflict is projected to worsen, Douglas-Hamilton said organizations have to reach out to local communities.
He said the situation of people living next to protected areas and a lack of understanding of conservation are the key challenges facing wildlife protection. The problem can be addressed through job creation.
"I wish to see people who live next to wildlife conservation areas become in the future the experts on conserving wildlife. Local communities need better education, and people's livelihoods are somehow connected with wildlife," he said.
It's unfortunate that some of the people living next to protected areas have never had a chance to appreciate the wildlife due to lack of resources, Douglas-Hamilton said.
"They don't have the privilege of driving a car to safely watch the wild animals. These chances should be given to both children and adults to appreciate the beauty of nature."
However, he appreciated the fact that a growing number of people from local communities are becoming involved with wildlife research and conservation, with some even becoming experts.
