Nikki is an incredible truth teller in long term sobriety who is on fire for Jesus. She and her husband started a celebrate recovery program in their community and are truly thriving and offering hope to so many who need it.

Between them they have 9 kids, a true his, hers and ours situation. Nikki said the key to her success in sobriety is to always remain teachable. She share how different seasons of their life and parenting have required different forms of strength. She replaced the unhealthy with new healthy habits helped her step into the beautiful role of wife and mother in a much better way. 

No matter how hard we try our choices that break relationships and trust have to be restored. The wreckage caused by active addiction is harmful to all. Like me, Nikki believes there’s not just one way to sobriety, we can all do it in different ways. 

Today she is trying to forage something that will have ripple effects for many generations. This is a beautiful conversation about the choices we have in thoughts, life and parenting. We both agree that living in the solution is where we get the most peace.

Oliveyah was born into a cult and often found herself living in a “drama triangle”. She used Alanon to help her learn how to take responsibility for her life and stop being a victim. Oliveyah learned she could change her next thought and her next action. 

Today, Oliveyah helps other people be in alignment with the choices they have. This process is so important as we grow into emotional sobriety, learn to trust ourselves again and make the choices that take us to the future self we envision.

Oliveyah shares about the importance of looking for things to give up or let go of in order to get through a tough time rather than adding things. This requires knowing what you actually want as specifically as possible. Then you give up something in relation to that thing. Chelsea was “thirsty” for all knowledge regarding getting well. She shared about her personal relationships and the challenges she had with the most intimate ones after she got sober.

We also talked about sugar and our obsession with it as an indicator of becoming an addict later because of the similar qualities it has to alcohol. Chelsea shared how giving up sugar for her was harder than alcohol.

We discussed the workarounds we can use for our favorite places like Starbucks or Chick-Fil-A to help maintain our health. 

Chelsea also shares her experience with socializing in sobriety and the challenges and boundaries she has created for herself.

What’s it like after a year? That is the theme of today's conversation and Hadley did not disappoint. We did into the identity issues that are sure to arise after we stay sober, the changes in our relationships, and the bubbling up of the desires of our hearts.

Brooke and I continue our conversation from last week today. We talked about the highs and lows with blood sugar and how that makes us not feel good or causes fatigue as well as depression and anxiety. 

Breaking the cycle needs to be our priority. We want the part of us that has the value of health and vitality to be in charge.

We have more willpower when our blood sugar is in control.  Brooke talks about the use of protein and meal timing to help combat us getting into this situation. As well as preparation is key to combatting these times. 

This conversation is power-packed with content for healing the gut, inflammation, autoimmune diseases and cravings. Creating balance in the bacteria in the gut helps manage all of this.

Dr. Brooke Scheller was a heavy drinker for years as she earned a master's degree and a doctorate in the wellness field. She loves to use her functional medicine training to help people solve the “mysteries” of what’s wrong with them. 

Because of her background in health and wellness, Brooke knew she was living a double life, yet she couldn’t stop.

She helps her client focus on “the one thing” of stopping drinking in order to change everything. She shares how just doing this one thing made such a big difference for her and of course for so many others. 

We talk about creating sustainable success in health by taking baby steps consistently every day to create huge change.

Sobriety is ONLY the beginning. We do so much work to become alcohol free which is a miracle, but the emotional sobriety comes later.

After I got sober in 2002 it became apparent that the biggest challenge I faced in those first few years was my negative thinking patterns. I was stuck in a cycle that had me continuously beating myself up every day. I was sober and of course, I felt a lot better and my life was getting better, because that’s what happens when you stop using substances. But the thought patterns had to be challenged.

Beth Anstandig was a sensitive kid. She realized young that the world had a lot of chaos that she did not understand so she gravitated toward her animals.  They were so different than the humans. 

We tell stories about how the loneliness of the human experience can feel socially immature, especially for moms. 

Beth talks about the self-care that is necessary to meet our needs. We first have to recognize what those needs are, and then share those with the people closest to us. 

This is a direct contrast to the animal world because they are giving their young feedback about how to behave including learning to listen to other people's needs. 

We overuse the term self-care so often in our society but what we are really talking about are needs. 

We are no different than pack animals we just think we are and our sophisticated brains allow us to talk ourselves out of our own needs 

We are not supporting parents the way we should in our society.  We talked about making the choice to take jobs far away from family and community to raise their kids.

We can convince ourselves that we don’t have a choice but we do.  Creating a community of support with people who can meet my needs is self-care.   “What are the resources I need to be a mammal in balance."
