Today we have the pleasure of talking with Jim Trick, who has recently skyrocketed in popularity thanks to his Instagram Page "MyWhiteBelt." Jim is currently a BJJ purple belt training out of First Colony BJJ.

Jim is a perfect example of what you can do if you are determined and do not make excuses. Jim is very honest with us about the good and not-so-good aspects of training BJJ, difficulties training later in life, being the sweaty guy, and mindset when first starting your jiu-jitsu journey. At his heaviest, Jim was well over the 400 lbs mark.

BJJ's impact on Jim's life is easily seen in what he writes and talks about. Many of us are looking for others that might know what we are going through in our journey. Jim's page offers some guidance and motivation for any new practitioner of the gentle art.

Ben is a beacon of light for anyone struggling with weight and thinking they can't change their life. Ben has lost over 150lbs, and at his heaviest was 333lbs. With the knowledge gained from his experience, Ben now helps others achieve their goals of transforming their lives.

Ben is very transparent with his daily struggles with weight, keeping the weight off, and fitting in training as a father and husband. He is also very critical of himself for better or worse. Ben's passion for helping others achieve their goals is easily felt. Today Jon and Travis sit down with the founders and secretary of a nonprofit called A New Grip. Christina and Samantha founded A New Grip together in 2020 to "help sexually exploited individuals as well as human trafficked survivors take back their lives and find their inner peace again using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a form of therapy and exercise."

What these ladies are doing to help others is inspiring and essential. Human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and children are more significant problems than many realize. Samatha's day job is a police officer who has to see the real-world situation of trafficking. But, with their organization's help, they can genuinely make a difference in people's lives and help them find inner peace again.

Today we have the great pleasure of talking with Zakk Miller, a BJJ Black Belt, BJJ Globetrotter Instructor, Marine Corps Staff Sergeant, and We Defy Training Facility Coordinator living in Arizona. Zakk wears many essential hats and gives the feeling of successfully wearing each one. Zakk started BJJ when he was 19 years old and reflected on many lessons he wished he would have learned when he was a white and blue belt. During our conversation, Zakk brings up a great concept on how to ask people what you can do to improve. His answer is an eye-opener and can change the way you look at how you are asking for help for improvement. It is easy to see that Zakk wants to help as many people as possible in BJJ and the veteran community. This episode could have quickly gone on for hours if time was not a constraint.

Today, we have Dru Phoenix, a black belt, A and M BJJ owner in South Florida, and Marine Corps, veteran. One of the first things you notice about Dru is his glowing personality. We found Dru through his Instagram reels, and he had us laughing from the first one.

Dru's BJJ journey started after he separated from active duty. When he was first exposed to the UFC and Jiu-Jitsu, Dru said he did not like it and thought it was stupid. After his first time trying it, though, he was hooked like all of us.

We discuss the benefits that BJJ brings to the veteran's community through commodore, purpose, and the therapeutic side of training. Leaving the service can cause confusion, depression, and anger but the people and community found in martial arts can help you overcome them.

Today we have the incredible opportunity to sit down with Steve Kwan, a BJJ black belt and host of BJJ Mental Models.

Steve feels almost like a unicorn in the BJJ community. He has never competed or even had the desire to do so. He established himself as a pure hobbyist from the time he started training. He has accomplished many goals in the community and seems dedicated to providing as much value to the art and those seeking knowledge as he can.

Steve puts it very simply "it must be fun" when it comes to training. Many new practitioners starting in the gentle art think they have to compete. This sometimes can develop an unhealthy relationship with BJJ and can lead down a path of giving up on the martial art.

If you are not having fun, then what is the point?

It is easy to tell from the moment Steve starts answering questions that he thinks of jiu-jitsu in a much more intellectual way. Every answer goes in great detail beyond what we and many others would think was possible.

Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with the biggest competitor of our show. Matt Gillette has earned over an incredible 30+ medals in IBJJF, including most recently winning Gold at Master North America. He is a first-degree black belt under Andre Maracaba in Arizona.

Matt started BJJ because one of his friends in the Marine Corps came home and showed him some of the moves he learned in MCMAP (Marine Crop Martial Arts Program) and was hooked after being constantly submitted. One of the first attributes we noticed was his sense of humor when talking with Matt. He comes off very light-hearted and makes the whole interview much more effortless.

Through Matthew's journey, he has developed firm opinions about specific topics. He is open with his distaste for point fighters, blue belts quitting, and McDojos. Some might find Matt a little rough around the edges because of his opinions, but those people are probably the ones who stop after getting their blue belts.
