Ep 113:Co-Parenting vs. Parallel Parenting with a Narcissistic Ex

Listen Later

What is the difference between co-parenting and parallel parenting?
If you have separated from your narcissistic ex-partner and you share children together, it is likely that you will still have to parent your children together in some capacity.  So, which one is right for you?

Co-parenting, in theory, is what is in the best interest of your children. During co-parenting, you are making decisions together, discussing concerns, attending events together, and trying to keep the rules and structure in the home consistent. This only works if both parents can truly put the child’s needs first and there is some trust in the other parent.

It is more likely that you all are going to be parallel parenting. Parallel parenting is shared parenting where you limit contact and interact with the other parent as little as possible to avoid conflict while both parents maintain a relationship with the child.

In this episode I speak about the challenges of parallel parenting with an abusive ex, why the courts still use the term co-parenting (and why you will use it too), and some of the things that you can do to help support your children during this and how to take care of yourself.
