Ep 96: Stomaching the Smear Campaign from your Narcissistic Ex

Listen Later

What is the most damaging lie your narcissistic ex partner has said about you?  And who are they saying it to?

The smear campaign can be extremely hurtful and can cause a lot of problems with receiving support, maintaining relationships, and even family court outcomes.

But why do perpetrators of domestic violence and coercive control use the smear campaign post separation?

  • The are trying to get back control and limit your support
  • They are trying to hurt you on purpose
  • They are trying to protect their own ego and perception of others

What can you do about these false narratives and lies?

There are some logistical and tactical things you can do with communication strategies and documentation strategies (see episode 32) and can show consistency in who you really are and show the contrast between you and your ex.

But how can you stomach these smear campaigns?

  • Know you are not alone
  • Change your mindset to see the lies as data
  • Remember the source of the information
  • Radically accept what is in your control vs what is outside your control
  • Assess if this is a battle worth fighting for
  • Learning to stay regulated through difficult emotions
  • Finding a community of support
